Chapter 578: Unpredictable

"Could the letters have been faked? Evania said the letters vanished after she read them. But she was certain that the handwriting was that of Marcus," Arabella pondered over it as well.

They might be getting tricked here again.

"If we only had to be wary of humans, it wouldn’t have been that easy to copy someone’s handwriting."

But the letter was handed to Evania by someone from that entity. It could have been faked. Or it was real, but they made Marcus write it.

"From what I learned from my lessons with the Overseer, the gods cannot directly interfere in a number of things since they would receive punishment from their Father, the eldest god who created existence.

"However, the gods could do still do things such as manipulate situations for their will to happen.

"As long as they do not directly kill someone, there are a lot of things they could do to interfere. Manipulating someone to do something would not trigger the restrictions," Alwin explained.

"I see. I that why he asked me to go into water when I was a child?"

Arabella recalled when she almost drowned in the pond. She had told Alwin about that event since it scared the hell out of her when she realized it was a god who tried to kill her.

"Yes. He did not kill you with his own hands. You would have died because you could not swim and there was no one to help you. But what he did was too close to directly causing your death, which must be why the God of Dragons helped you."

’It was almost the same as killing me. Rather, he had the intent of killing me,’ Arabella shivered when she recalled his smiling face when she fell into the water. It was such a scary thing.

"So, when you got swallowed up by that monster could not be blamed on him either?"

"It won’t. The rules were not specific. It was quite vague. That situation could be taken as me teleporting to that place and getting swallowed up on my own."

Alwin made a face since it was akin to saying he was stupid enough to teleport directly to a monster’s mouth.

"Then, he is our greatest challenge so far since there’s no way for us to predict his moves," Arabella was sullen about it since there was nothing they could do against a god.

Alwin nodded. He knew they could not fight against a god either so they could only find ways to evade or avoid him.

"Yes. We can only hope the God of Dragons would help us so that the entity would not be able to interfere too much. Since we are getting visions and memories of the past when we need them, he must be helping us. For now, we must worry about those we can fight against," Alwin concluded.

They then spent hours talking about their next courses of action. Still, no Ferdinand appeared to scold them for having such a long "date" in the flower garden.

The following day, Riley returned to Riva.

"What happened?" Arabella and Alwin inquired since Riley seemed to hesitate to report.

"They have returned to Umbra. But Princess Evania diverted from the plan a bit. It still achieved the same goal though," Riley scratched the back of his head. Uncertain if he should say it.

"Tell us. What happened?" Alwin frowned.

Riley then explained that as planned, they toured for three days.

However, on the fourth day, while on tour, they happened to drop by a village rumored to have several people getting sick due to an infectious disease.

Evania intentionally got herself infected despite Darcus and Orpheus being heavily against it.

Riley reported that it was because Evania recalled that before she occupied Renee’s body, the original owner had memories of getting sick to the point of collapsing. The original Renee died from contracting an infectious disease.

Evania healed Renee’s body unconsciously when she took over it.

Thus, instead of making the cause of death look like an accident, Evania decided to make the same cause of death.

To die from an illness so the guards with them would not blame themselves or be blamed for being unable to protect her from harm.

An illness would be out of her guards’ control.

Before a doctor could examine her, with Darcus and Orpheus’ help, Evania left Renee’s body. Thus, when a doctor came the next day, Renee was declared to have died from the illness.

Riley used magic to prevent the guards from contracting the disease.

Renee’s body was also blessed by priests from the temple in the village to prevent the spread of the illness.

The guards Renee’s adopted family had assigned to her used the teleportation magic scroll to return Riva so her family could mourn for her and see her while her body was still intact.

If they did not have a teleportation scroll, it would have taken several months to return. Her adoptive family wouldn’t have been able to see her body. It would have been cremated in that village.

"..."

Arabella and Alwin glanced at each other. They were speechless for a while.

Evania did not need to suffer the pain of an illness. Still, she was right that it would help so the guards would not be blamed for her death or feel responsible for it.

The Marquess family mourned and had Renee’s body cremated.

Arabella and her maids also attended the funeral. Her prayer was for the real Renee to rest in peace and hopefully be reincarnated to have a better life.

Aletha, Carla, Eunice, and Irene were all brokenhearted since they did not know that the real Renee was long gone.

They thought that they should have asked Renee to stay in the palace.

Thankfully, those who were left behind could not blame themselves for it for long since before she left, Evania had already made it clear to them that it was what she wanted to do. Thus, even if she "died," it happened while she was chasing what she wanted to do, and thus, had no regrets.

The mourning for "Renee" lasted for a month.
