Chapter 462: What Narcissa Did

’Narcissa is indeed very much capable. It’s such a waste to fire her. But if we could not set her straight, I can hire someone from the other families instead. I don’t need someone who is this violent to her workmates. There are a lot of families eager to prove their worth. Ivan is an important part of my plans. I cannot have her ruin him, especially since he’s the most capable among my assistants,’ Arabella made up her mind.

From the results of the tests given during the selection, Narcissa was fourth in rank among those with the best overall performance. Ivan topped it.

Thus, in terms of Valeria’s policy of prioritizing talents, Ivan was naturally more important even if he didn’t have a powerful family as Narcissa did. There were already rules that forbid violence against workmates as well.

Thankfully, Arabella could use those rules as reasons to remove Narcissa from her assistants. Even if Narcissa had a strong background, they could not insist that she stay since Raymond, Ronald, and Riley even witnessed her slap, Ivan.

To know ow more about the details of what happened before they had this investigated, they had to listen to Ivan first.

Ivan then relayed when it all began.

"It began a week after Your Majesty and His Majesty departed for Medeus..."

Once Narcissa was sure that news would not reach them immediately even if she got caught doing what she was doing, she began bullying Ivan.

First, Narcissa waited for Ivan to finish work one day and asked him to meet her in the garden.

When they were alone (her guards were around, of course, as a show of power), it was then that she forbade him from eating with them at the same table as her since he was a commoner.

Arabella had her assistants’ meals prepared by the palace chefs. Thus, they ate together in one of the dining halls in the palace, unless they brought their own chefs with them and ate at their own place. All her assistants wanted to try the meals prepared by palace chefs though, so they didn’t bring their own chefs with them.

Thus, they all ate in the same dining room at the same time since their work time was the same as well.

"I didn’t listen to her at first since I didn’t think I have to obey her. However, during mealtimes she kept commenting about my table manners and saying I somewhat lack etiquette even though I eat just the same as the others," Ivan sighed deeply at the memory.

But because he didn’t listen to her, Narcissa kept glancing his way when they eat and chastised the slightest bit of mistakes he made. They weren’t really mistakes per se since they could actually eat as they pleased. Narcissa was just irritated at him.

Meanwhile, Ronald and the others thought that Narcissa was into Ivan, so she was intentionally trying to bother him to get his attention. However, Denzel thought otherwise, and he usually spoke in Ivan’s defense. It made the dining table quite tense oftentimes.

Denzel and Narcissa apparently fought quite often even about the slightest things, so they were used to it.

However, Arabella heard from Ivan’s thoughts that he could not openly contradict Narcissa as Denzel does because he was a commoner and everyone in the room were from noble families, except for him. He feared making an enemy of everyone. Likewise, he knew that the Ryvalehs were close with the Reginalds, the family of the Prime Minister.

Narcissa also kept asking to meet him alone and she kept telling him that he was so full of himself to think he deserved to be there as the Empress’ assistant. She even went as far as accuse Ivan of cheating which was why he passed the test.

No one could cheat during the test though since there were knights everywhere and Alwin was there watching them all.

Narcissa kept bothering him until Ivan decided not to eat at the same table as they do as she had formerly asked. He thought she would finally stop. But Narcissa didn’t.

"Two weeks after I began eating separately, she asked me to quit being Your Majesty’s assistant and go back to his home or apply to another job somewhere she would never see me," Ivan revealed.

[She even said that?! She’s too daring.] Ronald was shocked.

Because he and the others thought that Narcissa was into Ivan, they ignored the times they happened to see them together in the garden. They did not suspect something else was going on.

After all, Narcissa had chosen a spot that could easily be mistaken as a dating place for couples.

"When I refused, it was then that she began to bully me much worse than she ever did before," Ivan continued.

This time, Narcissa didn’t even want him to eat at the same time as her and the others. Thus, Ivan had to eat after they were done. Then he noticed that the food he was getting suddenly lessened day by day until one time, no food came for me. When he asked the chefs, they apologized and said that it was because after meal times, Narcissa had all the food that was prepared for them donated to an orphanage in the city.

Thus, Ivan had to wait for them to prepare another meal if he wanted to eat. But that meant he would be late for work repeatedly.

When the chefs separated something for Ivan, they got scolded by Narcissa and her family was much more powerful than theirs, so they had no choice but to keep their mouths shut.

Alfredo was with Arabella and Ferdinand’s party heading to Medeus so only the newly hired chefs were there, and they didn’t want to be fired since it would ruin their reputation. Thus, they had to listen to Narcissa.

However, they did send someone from the assistant cooks to secretly send food to Ivan’s quarters at dawn, and late at night so he would still be able to eat.

But one day, the one they were sending got beat up and resigned from his post. It also happened to the next so the chefs stopped sending food to Ivan and acquire his own food in the meantime since they could not go against Narcissa.

They promised they would do their best to make up for it once Alfredo, the Head Chef, and Arabella were back.

Thus, Ivan had been cooking his own food recently. But going out of the palace to buy ingredients made him an easier target.
