Chapter 423: Before Everyone Fades Away Too

Ferdinand had lived alone for thousands of years. Growing up from a small dragon to a huge one took some time. But he was able to do it. Until he was able to take human form and master more forms of magic.

When the population of all creations grew, even his island was not spared by the curiosity of other races. He began encountering more people. And there were those who followed him around.

But all of them left his side one day. They got married, had children, aged, had grandchildren, and one day died.

That was the cycle of life he had kept witnessing. Everyone he came to know eventually died before him.

So, when his creator came to him one day asking him to get a mate and have children just like everyone he had watched, it made him wonder: What was the use?

Even if he did get a mate and had children, would they not die before he does just like all the others?

Wouldn’t their lives fade away right before his very eyes?

And yet, he would remain living as healthy as ever?

It was such a scary thought.

He didn’t feel like he needed to have children either. The same was true with his race. None of the other dragons mated as well.

After a while, his creator returned with two ’newborn’ dragons. His creator tasked him to raise them. And he felt obliged to raise the two since he didn’t want his creator to just leave them in an isolated and devoid place just like he was. He felt a sense of protectiveness over the two which were the only ones of the same kind of dragon he was.

It was then that he began to have companions that lasted quite long.

He liked being alone. It was peaceful and silent, and he didn’t have to accommodate others. But having the two with him wasn’t that bad.

But those two dragons eventually grew up and found a territory for themselves. Thus, he lived alone once again.

There was nothing wrong with living alone. He enjoyed it. And he didn’t crave for companions nor felt like he needed some.

For thousands of years, he lived his life that way and only mingled once in a while.

One day, the younger generation he raised got married. And after some time, he felt the birth of a new generation. He visited them of his own volition that one time, curious about the new dragon to be raised.

It was astounding to know that the younglings he raised, had a child of their own just like other creations.

He found an adorable newborn dragon so much smaller than the two he raised when the God of Dragons handed them to him. It looked so small and fragile that he worried how it would survive. But it eventually grew strong and had children of its own.

And one day, the two dragons Ferdinand raised died before he did.

It was then that he began to wonder. What was wrong with him? Why did the new generation die before he did?

He watched over the children of the two from afar. They had children of their own too and so did their children.

And yet, those generations died all the same, and Ferdinand still lived.

It wasn’t a good feeling. Seeing the younger generations go before him made him feel like he was overstaying. And that he couldn’t protect them.

But no matter how he tried to protect them, they eventually died of old age while he remained the same.

He was highly confused and frustrated over it for some time. Until one day, he got used to losing everyone.

After all, it was the cycle of life. One dies for another to be born.

And with his awfully long life, he was also able to witness their rebirth. He had grown to be able to recognize souls. And he recognized the souls of people he had met before. They were born anew without memories of their past life.

So, he concluded that death was indeed just merely a part of the cycle of life. There was nothing to be sad about it since everyone would eventually get reborn.

But there was this one soul that he kept encountering. It got reborn several times and he got to witness its life for several lifespans.

He couldn’t help but feel protective over it, so he watched it from afar. But eventually, even that soul was gone. He no longer sensed it. And he barely recalled it too.

Too much time had passed since then. Ferdinand and the other first generations began to be addressed as The Great Primordials. They were even hailed to be undying. Immortals. Something others longed for.

But to him, it meant they would continue living just as usual despite everyone and everything changing.

The world had already changed several times, crumbled to dust, and regenerated once again. He had lost everyone he knew and yet, he was still alive. It made him wonder if he was indeed immortal.

But his creator said he wasn’t. His time simply hadn’t come yet. And it never came. Even when he and his fellow Primordial Dragons wished for it with everything they had.

One day, Ferdinand encountered Raymond, a daring brat who asked him for a fight. Raymond lost, of course. But he was among the ones that stayed with him the longest. Rendell and the others eventually came too. And some died while Ferdinand never changed.

Would he have to witness Raymond and the others’ deaths too?

Before that happens, he decided he would go first. So did his fellow Primordials who had also gotten tired of living.

They were very much bored with their lives too. They had done everything he wanted. There was nothing left for them to do.

Their wish was granted with a self-destructive sleep. But even that was disturbed when the long-lived races almost got wiped out by humans.

Ferdinand got to meet a young elf who had lost his parents. It was Alwin. He decided to raise him since he was scared of everyone else.

Alwin grew up quite nicely. And once again, Ferdinand began to dread the time when even Alwin would die before he does. He didn’t want to see that either.

Thus, since he had done his job gathering the survivors 6000 years ago and protecting Estrella as the gods have asked, Ferdinand wanted to completely leave before Alwin, Raymond, or any of the others die before him.

He had to go first before everyone else fades away before his very eyes again.
