Chapter 232: A Princess’ Duty
Chapter 232: A Princess’ Duty
After her emotional outburst, Arabella and everyone else finally went inside. She clarified that it wasn’t because Ferdinand did something bad to her or anything. She reasoned that she simply suddenly realized just how homesick she had felt after seeing them again.
Her family had to apologize to Ferdinand for assuming it was his fault. Benjamin especially for his disrespectful conduct. Arabella also apologized since it was her fault they assumed wrong.
Ferdinand easily accepted their apology though since he was also very much shocked when Arabella suddenly began crying. He was very much relieved it wasn’t because being in Valeria was too much for her.
He made Alwin heal her eyes so they wouldn’t keep being swollen and red. After that, Ferdinand headed to the dining hall first and gave Arabella and her family some time to reunite and speak with each other before lunch begins.
"Ella, are you sure he had been treating you well? Does he truly like you?" Benjamin verified again and Arabella assured them that Ferdinand had been treating her well.
Her brother was doubtful since he heard about Ferdinand going to the borders after only a month of staying with Arabella in the Imperial Palace. Their honeymoon time was too short and Arabella was not even pregnant yet for him to leave like that.
She assured them it was merely because Ferdinand gave her time to sort out her feelings and get used to life in Valeria.
Further, they were also thinking she could have been made to dress the way she was today, regardless of what she wanted, so they all sighed in relief when she said it was her who decided to wear full Valerian attire to show her acceptance of the Empire and her husband.
Her family was glad that the letters Aletha had sent them were indeed true that Arabella was getting along well with her husband whom she used not to like in the least bit.
"Brother, I was shocked when I heard you were injured," Arabella complained about how no one even told her Benjamin was gravelly injured. She wouldn’t have known if Ferdinand hadn’t told her Alwin had gone to heal her brother.
Her parents apologized and explained that it was because they didn’t want to worry her or make her back out of the wedding.
"I see. I am glad you are faring well," Arabella eyed her brother from head to foot and Benjamin looked perfectly healthy.
There was no sign he had been injured gravely before. Rather, he looked healthier and stronger than he used to. He seemed to have trained his body more after the assassination attempt.
"Yes, thanks to your husband’s magician. I’m so sorry I couldn’t attend your wedding. I wanted to see you off properly but I ended up in that state. When I woke up, the wedding was already over," Benjamin apologized.
[I didn’t want her to marry that huge and mean-looking guy but it seems Mother and Father made the right choice. He seems to be doing well in protecting Ella as well. He has such a powerful magician too. We can indeed be rest assured that Ella is safe with them around her. He’s so polite and humble when speaking with Father and Mother too, even though he is the Emperor of Valeria. And he did forgive me easily even after I grabbed him like that and accused him of hurting Ella. But what if it’s just a façade and he was the kind of bastard the rumors say?]
’He was against my marriage with Ferdinand?’ Arabella was surprised since it was the first time she learned her brother was actually against it. She thought everyone agreed on it.
Arabella was even more surprised when Benjamin told her that he was supposed to attend her wedding with their parents but the assassination attempts happened a few days before it.
Thus, when Alwin went to fetch her parents before the wedding, Benjamin wasn’t with them.
Her parents reasoned Benjamin had something important to do but he was already in a coma then.
They kept Benjamin’s situation a secret due to the repercussions that could happen once the information was leaked.
Moreover, the goal of the assassination attempt was indeed to stop the wedding to prevent the alliance between Valeria and Lobelius.
Thus, they had to ensure it pushed through instead regardless of Benjamin being in critical condition.
Arabella’s former theory was right. Lobelius could have been attacked if Benjamin’s situation was revealed so they had to push through with her wedding. Even more so since in the worst case scenario that Benjamin dies, the likelihood of enemy attacks were higher.
However, her parents had to hurry back home right after the wedding since it got leaked to other kingdoms that her brother was in a coma.
One of the assassins who attacked Benjamin had escaped and probably delivered the news to whoever sent him and it was intentionally spread to other kingdoms to incite them to attack.
Their scouts had apparently reported there was heightened military movement in kingdoms near Lobelius during that time as well.
This meant if Arabella’s wedding was delayed or canceled, Lobelius would have been attacked while there was no alliance yet since it would only be official once the wedding was over.
But thanks to Arabella’s wedding pushing through, no one attacked Lobelius.
She saved countless lives in Lobelius by getting married.
As a princess, it would have been an honor to her. It was the Royal Family’s duty to protect their people. It was hers as much as her parents’ responsibility.
Arabella was old enough now to understand, and be able to say; she didn’t mind getting married as part of her duty as a royal princess. She knew now that she wouldn’t have been happy if Lobelius got ravaged by war and she didn’t do anything about it when she could have helped them by getting married.
But even when she was younger, she would have accepted the circumstances more easily if she knew about these. They should have informed her.
Rather than seeing Lobelius in flames, she would choose getting married to help them.
It wasn’t about being holy or kind.
It was simply because this place was where she was born and where she grew up. She knew far too many people here to just let them to die without doing whatever she could to help them.
She would at least choose to be useful that way than let the people she knew and valued to die.
Moreover, she had already abandoned Lobelius once. She didn’t want to do it again.
Earlier, her family seemed to have had the misunderstanding that she didn’t want to speak with them at all. Was that why they didn’t reach out before?
Arabella was relieved thought that her family informed her about the goings now. If she had known this in the past, she wouldn’t have misunderstood everything.
Was it because they got the chance to speak with each other in this life?
It seems going here to Medeus was the right decision indeed. She should thank Raymond once they get back to Riva.
