Chapter 225: Arrival in Medeus
Chapter 225: Arrival in Medeus
The journey to Medeus became more exhausting than it should be due to the constant attacks from assassins. They were truly trying to get on Ferdinand’s nerves. He wanted to join the fight himself due to irritation but he didn’t dare to leave Arabella alone.
Arabella and Ferdinand didn’t get the chance to talk about anything aside from the reports coming from Alwin and the knights.
During the nights, they were not in the mood to be intimate either since Arabella was tired from the carriage ride and Ferdinand was on alert expecting more assassins to attack.
Their supposedly short journey to Medeus felt longer due to this, but after a few days, they finally arrived unscathed.
Arabella’s carriage which had been targeted all the time did not even earn a single scratch.
Alwin and Riley also ensured not a single scratch was present among the knights or their weapons and armor. They made it seem as if the journey was smooth sailing the whole time.
Once they arrived at the front gates of Medeus, their carriages had to be inspected, so Ferdinand had to go on his own. Arabella was left in her carriage and Aletha was made to ride with her to make it seems as if they were the ones who rode the carriage together.
Meanwhile, Alwin and Riley disguised themselves as among the knights who rode alongside Arabella and Ferdinand’s carriages.
Ferdinand assigned Alwin to Arabella since he was more powerful than Riley and was more likely able to protect her no matter what attack came.
The knights who were to be left outside the gates were instructed by Ferdinand to be divided into groups and surround Medeus. There were groups assigned to each entry and exit point of Medeus. They could regroup easily anyway with Alwin and Riley’s powers.
It was a measure to block anyone who tried to exit in case Arabella or any of their companions were abducted.
Once the inspections were done, the gates were opened and the Bell Tower of Medeus resounded to signal and welcome their arrival.
Their arrival was closely watched. There were a lot of Medeus knights watching from the ramparts of the gigantic walls.
The road to the Grand Palace was wide and empty for them to be able to pass through freely. But, the streets and buildings on either side with a good view of the road were filled with people who wanted to see the entry of the Mighty Emperor of Valeria, who, for the first time, came to Medeus.
They wanted to get a glance at the famous Dark Emperor whose face most people had not ever seen.
There were knights of Medeus lined up on either side of the road as guards. Arabella learned from their thoughts that they were there to ensure that no one would dare step in and obstruct their passage. It was a measure to prevent Ferdinand from killing any of the citizens.
They were not sure about the veracity of the rumors regarding Ferdinand’s impatience but it was better safe than sorry. They did not want to ruin his mood the instant he entered Medeus and possibly cause him to back out from joining the Assembly.
Once they reached the Grand Palace of Medeus, the gates were opened wide as their arrival was officially announced.
A band played musical instruments as a welcoming tribute as their carriages entered the gates. Medeus put forth a lot of effort to make the Empire feel welcome since they were still trying to make Valeria join the Council.
Ferdinand got out of his carriage first and went to Arabella’s. He helped her get down and offered his hand to escort her.
Arabella looked around. The representative of Medeus and Kings and Queens from various territories in Eliora were gathered ready to welcome them. They had arrived early just to witness the Dark Emperor’s arrival themselves.
She learned from Alwin’s thoughts that there were magicians on the ramparts earlier recording their arrival at the gates.
It was projected in the Grand Palace so the other royals were able to see that there were a lot of knights with them. And all of them were wearing the best armor and weapons there could be in Eliora.
Arabella’s gaze stayed on a particular spot. Her parents were also there.
[My Ella! I can finally see her after so long! Oh, she seems to have indeed regained her usual weight. She was so thin on her wedding day. They treated her well, right?]
’She’s worried about me?’ Arabella gulped after hearing her mother’s thoughts. She wasn’t sold to Ferdinand after all, was she?
[They had a lot of knights with them. It seems he is keeping her safe as he promised. She must be eating properly now too. She looks healthier than she did before. Oh, and all of her clothes and accessories are Valerian. Did they make her wear it? Or had she truly accepted her husband now?]
Her father also seemed to be worried. And there was apparently an agreement between them that the condition for Ferdinand to marry her was if he could keep her safe.
She eyed her parents from head to foot and they were the ones who seemed to have lost weight instead. She wondered if they had a lot of work to do or if Benjamin’s condition relapsed and they didn’t inform her or Ferdinand. She wanted to be able to speak with them soon.
Arabella smiled at her parents and they glanced at each other before smiling back. She learned from their thoughts that they feared she would never smile at them again for a long while.
It was because she never smiled ever since she had resolved to accept her fate and be wed to Ferdinand after Andrew got married.
It seems her parents were thinking she hated them now because she had not sent a single letter addressed to them. Not even to her older brother whom she used to get along with.
But it was simply because Arabella didn’t know what to say. And she wanted to verify first if they indeed had goodwill for her when they agreed for her to be Ferdinand’s Empress. Thus, she had resolved to meet them in Medeus first and listen to their thoughts.
