Chapter 209: Maybe, I Can Tell Her

Alwin made a temporary bath where the maids could bathe Dimo.

While the maids were busy with the child, Alwin explained to Arabella and the knights why Dimo released fire earlier.

Alwin said that it was because Dimo had a lot of mana and a strong affinity for fire magic. Since he doesn’t know how to use it properly, it simply overflows when his emotions were heightened and get out of control when he was terrified and panicked.

It would be dangerous if left just as it was both for Dimo and the people around him.

"Can you teach him how to control it?" Arabella inquired and Alwin turned silent.

’Right. Teaching some random child was not his duty. And this is Dimo. He knows Dimo would be my magician someday. But I’m not planning to do that anymore.’

[I can teach something so basic. But why should I?] Alwin thought. [He does seem to be promising for a human.]

{How dare you not agree to something my wife asked.} Ferdinand’s cold voice suddenly boomed in their head.

{That was not my intention, my lord. It’s just, we don’t even know this child yet. What if this is a trap and this child would go against us someday?} Alwin reasoned.

{So what? My wife wants him to learn, then teach him. That’s all you have to do. What else kind of reason do you need? Are you scared of a child? Even if you teach him everything you know, would he even be able to compete with your several millennia of experience?}

{No, of course not. My apologies, I will teach the child.} Alwin had no choice but to agree.

’My bad. I’m sorry Alwin. I didn’t mean to get you scolded.’

It was true though that even if Alwin thought Dimo, how would he ever be able to compete with Alwin who had so much mana and experience with his long life?

’But what did Ferdinand mean with several millennia? Just how old was Awin? Wasn’t he the youngest among them and was akin to Ferdinand’s younger brother or child?’

Arabella wished she would know how old everyone was soon.

Once Dimo was cleaned and dressed well, he was brought to Arabella and Ferdinand’s table.

[Their food looks delicious. I haven’t eaten since the other day.] Dimo’s stomach growled at the sight of food.

’Right. No wonder he passed out. He must have been tired, starving, and aching from all his injuries.’

"Come, sit down, and eat," Arabella gestured to the seat beside her and Dimo eagerly sat down.

She had instructed the maids to not tell him yet that they were from Valeria. And most especially, that they were the Emperor and Empress.

Thus, Dimo could be this careless. He still, gave a wary glance at Ferdinand though but Arabella gave him a reassuring smile.

In her previous life, Dimo had told her he was so scared of Ferdinand before so he hesitated in agreeing to be her mage.

"Behave if you don’t want to be eaten by the Dark Emperor," was a phrase Dimo’s nanny used to tell him when he was a child.

It was the same for other children in Olivier and other parts of Loranne and other neighboring areas of the Empire. No, even in farther territories that shared no borders with them. The Emperor of Valeria was often times used to scare children so they would be obedient to their parents.

There were exaggerated stories about Ferdinand eating children, drinking his enemies’ blood, and doing all sorts of violence which worsened his image as the Dark Emperor.

Not knowing that the person known as Dark Emperor was the one with him, Dimo was able to eat carelessly.

Dimo ate eagerly but he would stop and eat slowly every time he caught Ferdinand looking at him.

"Dear, this tastes good," Arabella picked something and made her husband eat too.

"Stop staring at him," she mouthed soundlessly.

Ferdinand then ate silently and avoided glancing at Dimo. Arabella did too so Dimo was able to focus on eating.

Once Dimo was full and was able to rest for a bit, it was time to ask questions.

Arabella assured Dimo that they needed to know what was going on so they would know what to do with him. Especially since Dimo freaked out when Alwin offered to send him home.

Since Dimo didn’t want to be sent home, he rode with Arabella in her carriage since they needed to continue their journey. She made Dimo sit beside her.

Of course, Ferdinand didn’t want to go in his own carriage so he was also with them.

Alwin needed to hear Dimo’s story too so he was also in Arabella’s carriage as well and sat beside Ferdinand.

The carriage was wide but it suddenly felt cramped.

"Wow! It’s a dragon!" Dimo saw the book Arabella had settled on the seat earlier when they rushed out.

Ferdinand and Alwin were surprised that Dimo was not scared.

"Your Highness, I mean, Your Majesty," Dimo corrected since he heard everyone addressing her as ’Your Majesty.’

He asked her what the book was about.

"Oh, this is about a dragon and his mate," Arabella said and Ferdinand and Alwin flinched when they realized the book was about the founding myth of Valeria.

"You are not scared of dragons?" Ferdinand asked Dimo.

"No. I think they’re cool. They’re strong and powerful," Dimo imitated a dragon spewing fire.

"But they are said to eat humans," Alwin said and Dimo flinched.

Alwin asked to gauge Arabella’s reaction knowing that his lord would like to know what she thought of dragons.

Arabella maintained a neutral expression and Ferdinand was relieved when she looked like she didn’t believe it.

"So what? They are still cool and strong. And they are not real anyway," Dimo pouted.

"Right, Your Majesty?" Dimo tried to find an ally.

"Yes, of course. And this book says dragons can be kind too. They are not that much different from humans," Arabella said, and her husband’s face brightened.

[Maybe, I can tell her about me after all.] Ferdinand saw hope.

’Yes, please do.’

Dimo asked Arabella again what was the story in the book and she told him a simplified version of the founding myth.
