Chapter 149: I Won’t Let You Die
Once they were on the balcony of one of the highest rooms in the palace, the maids brought some tea and light refreshments.
Arabella silently took a sip of her tea. She waited for Ferdinand to speak first this time.
But the more silent she was, the more Ferdinand became nervous. But if she spoke first again, he might lose the courage he had gathered when he had been thinking about how to say the words he wanted to say.
Arabella had drank a whole cup of tea before Ferdinand finally spoke.
"Earlier, in Safiro..." he paused and nervously glanced at her to check if it was fine to continue.
Arabella nodded to encourage him. It was honestly taking so much of her patience since she already knew what he was going to ask. But she wanted to hear him out so she didn’t interrupt.
"You seemed to be angry at me. I couldn’t get it off my mind. I was wondering why. What did I do that made you angry? Are you still angry at me?" Ferdinand continued.
He braced himself to listen to whatever reason she was going to say. He thought of all sorts of things she could tell him or how she would scold him. His imagination was too creative that Arabella almost chuckled.
"I’m not angry anymore," Arabella began.
[She’s not angry anymore?!!] Ferdinand perked up. He regained some confidence and held her hand.
"You’re really not angry anymore?" he kissed the back of her hand with his eyes hoping she would say she wasn’t.
"Yes. And I wasn’t really angry in the first place. I was just a bit irritated that you were playing around when you were fighting the monsters."
[Playing around? She noticed I wasn’t serious?]
Arabella flinched. She recalled she doesn’t know anything about fighting so she shouldn’t have noticed he wasn’t serious. After all, she only knew about it from his knights’ thoughts. But it was too late now since she already said it.
"I mean, what if something happened to you? What if you got hurt?"
[!!!]
"You were worried about me?!!" his eyes were shining and he held her hand tighter.
[Isn’t this the first time someone’s ever worried if I would get hurt while fighting?]
’Geez. Wasn’t Alwin worried about you all the time?’ she wanted to say.
But then, she recalled that Alwin wasn’t there when Ferdinand fought. Alwin also knew what exactly Ferdinand can do so he probably wouldn’t worry but be proud of whatever Ferdinand does instead.
"Of course. You are my husband," Arabella was overwhelmed at how bright his eyes were after she said this.
He kissed the back of her several times and she felt like it was on fire.
[What’s this overflowing feeling? I’m so happy that I want to kiss and hug her tightly.]
Ferdinand stared at her so longingly that Arabella felt embarrassed. He wanted to go over to her side to embrace and kiss her but he held back.
"Thank you for worrying about me," Ferdinand finally said.
"I was just worried about what would happen to me if you were gone. I know you are strong. I hear about your feats all the time. But you can’t be reckless either. What do you think would happen if I become a widow? I would have to get married again," Arabella ended up spouting nonsense.
"Get married again?!" Ferdinand frowned deeply.
[If I die, the fight for her hand would happen again. Icarus would likely win it all once I’m gone.] Ferdinand was wide-eyed at the realization.
’Fight for my hand?’ Arabella tilted her head. Then she recalled the fight Ferdinand had to win before marrying her. She didn’t believe it before but it was true.
While chatting with Raymond and Alwin every now and then, she learned from their thoughts that it was an intense fight that involved all those who seriously wanted to marry her.
Andrew who was already in a relationship with her then, was, of course, the only exception.
[NO. I can’t let her marry another man. NEVER. Icarus is a good man but Arabella is my wife now. She’s mine. I won’t allow another man to steal her from me. Not even Alwin. ]
’Huh? Why is Alwin in the picture again?’
"I will never allow that to happen. I will not die on you. I will live a long long life and keep you by my side so no one will ever get their hands on you. You will be my only wife for as long as I live," Ferdinand promised with so much determination and dedication in his eyes.
Arabella recalled Esmeralda who keeps longing for her deceased husband even after he was long gone. She was amazed at the dryad’s dedication but it was a sad and lonely path to take.
She just learned from Blanca’s thoughts earlier that among the long-lived races, elves and dragons had the longest lives.
Does she want Ferdinand to keep on loving and longing for her in his awfully long life?
Wouldn’t he be so sad and lonely for the rest of his life?
What if he spent the rest of his life trying to revive her again?
For her, as long as she gets to meet Fermin again and correct her mistakes of the past, Arabella would be satisfied. She doesn’t need a very long life that seemed like an eternity.
"Thank you. I am grateful for those words. But in the case, I die before you do, please move on and marry someone else and live happily."
’I don’t want you to continue chasing after my ghost.’
Ferdinand already lived his life sadly because of her. She doesn’t want him to live that way again in case her time to die comes.
"Oh, but of course, you have to make sure our children are taken good care of," Arabella added when she recalled Fermin.
She froze when Ferdinand’s expression instantly changed.
"No, I won’t let you die. I will protect you so we can live together for a long long time," Ferdinand held both of her hands.
[I won’t allow her to leave me alone.] Ferdinand thought.
Arabella gazed at her husband. He didn’t look like he would budge so she gave up on it for the time being.
However, in the future, she would have to speak with him about it again.
