Rebirth to take revenge
Chapter 90: A week

Chapter 90: A week

Claire shook her head, about to answer, when her eyes caught someone who seemed to be observing them. Seeing Claire’s weak condition, Paisley hesitated but then approached cautiously.

"Are you alright?" Paisley asked, her voice low but laced with concern.

Matilda quickly turned, grabbing Claire’s arm and narrowing her eyes at Paisley. "Who are you? What do you want?"

Paisley raised her hands slightly, offering a small, nervous smile. "I live in the village. I just... I saw she looked unwell and thought maybe I could help."

Matilda studied her for a moment before huffing, "She doesn’t need any help. We’re just gathering herbs. Mind your business."

But Claire seized the opportunity. "Please... just some water," she murmured, trying to appear more vulnerable than she felt.

Paisley glanced at Matilda, then at Claire, her brow furrowing in concern. "I can bring her some water from the well; it’s just nearby."

Matilda hesitated but then let go of Claire’s arm. "Fine. But make it quick."

Paisley hurried off to fetch the water, and when she returned, she offered the cup to Claire, who drank it gratefully. As Claire handed the cup back, she whispered, "Thank you."

Paisley nodded, then glanced nervously at Matilda before stepping back. "If you need anything else, I live just down the path."

Matilda watched her go, her expression hard. "Don’t think about trying anything," she warned Claire as they resumed their walk.

Claire’s thoughts, however, were already racing. This unexpected encounter might be the opportunity she needed. Paisley’s eyes flickered, and she quickly raised her hands, smiling awkwardly.

"Don’t worry, we’re on the same side."

Then Paisley glanced at Claire and said, "I know you must be forced to live here or might have been kidnapped. I know where this woman lives, so expect me there this evening."

Upon hearing this, Claire’s wary expression relaxed a bit. Late at night, Claire tightly held a stone in her hand, using the pain to resist the drowsiness caused by the medicine. Just when she was about to give up, a faint sound from outside the window made her open her eyes in surprise. She’s here.

Paisley cautiously pushed open Claire’s window. As soon as she poked her head in, she met Claire’s watery eyes.

"Ah...um!" She was startled and let out a cry, but before she could shout, her mouth was tightly covered by Claire.

"Shh, keep your voice down," Claire whispered, making a gesture to be quiet and pointing to the door behind her. "Come in. No one is guarding me at night."

Seeing that it was Claire, Paisley felt as if her thoughts had been seen through. Immediately, her face turned red, and she said anxiously, "Are you sure? Both of us will be doomed if we get caught."

As soon as she entered, she locked the window and bolted the door from the inside. Then she sat on the stool by the bed and looked at Claire, who was standing against the wall, and asked, "Is your husband Alexander Miller?"

Claire nodded, neither confirming nor denying.

"He’s looking for you all over the city now."

"I know," Claire said softly, hiding the complexity in her eyes. It had been a week since she disappeared, and Alex must be anxious by now. But what she didn’t expect was that Cole hadn’t given any news to Alex after such a long time. Claire was very worried, not knowing what Cole was planning.

"Do you know how much money he offered?" Paisley’s voice trembled a bit as she looked at Claire with excited eyes.

Claire was stunned, shook her head, and her mood became even more complicated.

"Ten million!" Paisley held up ten fingers, staring at Claire with burning eyes, and said, "Is your husband really that rich? If I bring you to him, will he really give me what I want? Are you worth all this?"

To climb up and get rid of her current life, what Paisley needed most was money!

Looking at the fanaticism in Paisley’s eyes, Claire felt inexplicably flustered and said, "No, I can’t promise you."

"Why?" Paisley suddenly looked up, unable to believe it, and asked, "Are you doing this on purpose? Do you not want this money to fall into my hands?"

Before Claire could speak, Paisley stood up abruptly and threatened, "I’m telling you, in this village, everyone trusts me! I can save you, but I can also destroy you at any time."

She glared fiercely at Claire and turned to leave.

"Wait, I promise you."

Claire’s voice sounded from behind. Paisley stopped in her tracks and turned to look at her. She saw Claire biting her lip and saying, "If you help me escape, I can give you some money. Although it’s not as much as five million, it’s enough for you to leave here."

"But I don’t want to see Alex." After she finished speaking, she added another sentence. She had already decided that she would leave City A immediately after escaping this time. From now on, she would stay away from Alex.

She had loved him, which made her even more aware that there was no future for them. Rather than staying here as his weakness, it was better to let go early. As for the clinic...

She clenched her fist. She would not allow anyone to stand in her way. If City A was not an option, she would open a clinic in another city. Paisley stared at Claire for a moment, her eyes flickering.

Claire calmly met her gaze and said, "Although my husband is rich, he is still a businessman."

"You’re not sure if he will really give it to you. I have been running the clinic for some time now and have saved up a considerable amount. I can offer you two million."

"This amount may not be as much as what he can offer, but you can be sure that you will get it in full."

"Two million?" Paisley’s eyes lit up with greed as she stared at Claire.

"However, you have to take me away first," Claire reminded her calmly.

"That’s necessary. Don’t worry," Paisley replied confidently. "You have to be careful. I was kidnapped by someone called Cole," Claire warned, feeling worried about Paisley’s overconfidence. However, Paisley dismissed her concerns with a wave of her hand and assured her, "Don’t worry, I know the person in charge here. It will only take a word to get you out."

Hearing this, Claire finally breathed a sigh of relief and said, "I trust you."

"Wait for me here for a few days first," Paisley smiled and said to her. "After I arrange everything, I will come back to find you, and we will leave together."

"Okay," Claire nodded slightly.

In City A, at the Miller’s villa, the living room was filled with Alex’s black-clad bodyguards as well as some military personnel. Alex sat in the main seat of the sofa, looking haggard.

Claire had been missing for a week, and he hadn’t slept at all. He had been investigating all night, but there were still no clues. The mountains in the eastern suburbs had been searched, and even the whole of City A had been combed through.

Not to mention Claire, even Cole seemed to have disappeared into thin air, with no news at all. Alex’s brow furrowed tighter and tighter, his gaze icy and chilling, making people shudder.

"Bang, bang -"

At that moment, the sound of knocking on the door suddenly rang out.

"Who is it?" he asked.

"It’s me," Nelson’s voice came from outside the door.

Hearing the familiar voice, Alex took a deep breath and forced himself to calm down. These days, Nelson had come countless times, but he always chose to avoid him. Until today, Claire’s whereabouts were still unknown. He raised his hand to signal the old housekeeper beside him to open the door.

As soon as Nelson entered, he felt the oppressive atmosphere in the living room. Alex sat on the sofa, his face haggard and gloomy. However, it did not diminish the anger in his heart.

"Alexander Miller!" Nelson strode forward and grabbed Alex’s collar, lifting him up from the sofa. The black-clad bodyguards beside him were about to step forward to stop him, but he raised his hand and stopped them.

Alex grasped Nelson’s hand and with a little force, pulled him down. Nelson’s eyes tightened; he clenched his fists and gritted his teeth, saying,

"What did you promise me when I handed Claire to you? She disappeared after only one day? Are you supposed to protect her like this?"

His eyes were red, obviously furious. Alex was silent for a moment and then said, "You need to calm down first."

"Calm down?" Nelson laughed and pointed at Alex’s nose, saying,

"Alex, how can you expect me to calm down?"

He roared in anger, "Do you know her situation? She’s carrying your child in her belly!"

"Now that she’s gone, do you know what kind of life she’s living? I dream every day that she’s being bullied. How can you tell me to calm down?"

Nelson gritted his teeth and stared at Alex firmly. "If you can’t protect her, let me do it instead."

After saying this, Nelson pushed Alex away and left the Miller family’s mansion in big strides.
