Rebirth to take revenge
Chapter 89: Help

Chapter 89: Help

Claire stiffened, her gaze lowering to her flat stomach. "I haven’t been pregnant for long, how do you know?"

Sighing, Claire sat back on the bed, striking up a conversation with the woman beside her in a soft voice. When Claire asked about the medicine, the woman couldn’t hide her proud expression.

"I’m the only doctor in this village," she said. "But the medical skills I use are... unconventional. That’s why I was driven out of the village. You’re lucky to have met me; otherwise, your child might’ve been lost last night."

"In fact, that man isn’t my man. I was kidnapped by him," Claire said gently, her tone like a gurgling stream. But the woman remained unimpressed, waving her hand dismissively.

"Your affairs don’t concern me. He brought me back to the village, so he’s my benefactor. I only listen to him. You should stay put, or I don’t mind letting you try my other secret medicine."

Claire’s heart raced, but she suppressed her anger. "Thank you," she said calmly.

The woman smiled. "Rest up. I’ll prepare breakfast and call your man."

"What did you give me to eat?" Claire asked coldly, eyeing the woman warily.

The woman raised her eyebrows proudly. "A medicine I personally concocted. Don’t worry, it’ll just make you weak and won’t harm your body or the child in your stomach."

After she left, Claire closed her eyes. She had barely escaped Cole once. This time, she might not be so lucky.

After speaking, she stood up and walked out of the wooden house. As the room fell silent once again, Claire slowly closed her eyes. It had been fortunate enough to escape from Cole’s grasp once, but this time, she probably wouldn’t be so lucky. Since Cole brought her here, it meant that their previous location had been compromised. Perhaps Alexander had already come. Claire’s emotions were mixed.

For now, she could only settle down in this village and wait for another opportunity to escape. Thinking of this, Claire opened her eyes, her gaze calm and serene. When Cole pushed the door open and entered, he met her composed stare.

He sneered and walked up to her, grabbing her slender neck tightly and growling, "You damn woman, you really made me suffer."

"Do you think by doing this, Alexander will be able to find you? Dream on!" Cole’s grip tightened for a moment before he smirked, his tone mocking. "In this place, even if he digs three feet into the ground, he won’t find you!"

After he finished speaking, Claire’s eyes remained clear, without a trace of panic. Cole hesitated, suspicious of her unshaken demeanor. Subconsciously, he released his grip on her neck and asked, "Aren’t you afraid? Or do you have other plans?"

Claire rubbed her sore neck and looked up at him, her voice soft but steady, "What’s the use of being afraid? Didn’t you just say that even if he dug three feet into the ground, he wouldn’t find me here? If that’s the case, why worry about me running away?"

Without waiting for a response, Claire slowly got up from the bed, walked to the table, and picked up a glass of water to moisten her throat. She moved with deliberate calmness, as if none of this truly concerned her.

Meanwhile, Cole furrowed his brow and carefully observed Claire’s reactions. After a moment, he concluded that she truly displayed no signs of distress or fear. Could she have left any clues for Alexander?

He wondered briefly if she was bluffing, trying to buy time, but after staring at her for a while, he shook his head in frustration. No, Claire seemed too composed—almost as if she had already resigned herself to her fate.

"Why so calm, huh?" Cole finally asked, narrowing his eyes. "Aren’t you the least bit concerned about your precious Alexander?"

Claire set the cup down, her gaze steady. "I don’t see the point in worrying about something beyond my control. Whatever happens, happens."

Cole’s expression darkened at her indifference. He hated that she wasn’t reacting the way he wanted, no signs of pleading, no attempts to beg for mercy. He had expected her to break down, maybe even bargain for her freedom, but this was... unsettling.

"You’re not scared of me, are you?" he said, his voice low and threatening as he stepped closer.

"I’ve been scared before," Claire replied, unflinching. "But fear doesn’t help me now."

Her words only irritated Cole further. He grabbed her wrist, yanking her closer. "You don’t get it, do you? This isn’t some game. If Alexander doesn’t come, you’re staying here forever."

"Then that’s my fate," Claire said softly, looking him in the eye. "But you forget one thing."

"And what’s that?" Cole sneered.

"Alexander isn’t someone who gives up," she whispered. "He will find me, no matter where you hide me. And when he does, there will be nowhere for you to run."

Her unwavering confidence seemed to unnerve Cole for a moment.

He let go of her wrist and took a step back, his expression unreadable. Claire’s words echoed in his mind, stirring a flicker of doubt. Could Alexander truly find her, even in this remote village?

He dismissed the absurd idea. If Alex had any clues, he wouldn’t have sent so many people to search the mountains. With this realization, a sinister smile appeared on Cole’s face. He approached Claire and lightly traced a rough index finger across her snow-white forehead. "Do you know that Alex is very nervous about you?

He searched for you all night, but..." He paused for effect. "He just couldn’t find you."

"You talk too much," Cole snapped, trying to shake off his unease. He turned on his heel, heading for the door. "Stay put. We’ll see how long your optimism lasts."

With that, Cole turned and left. As the door slammed shut behind him, Claire exhaled slowly, her calm facade cracking ever so slightly. She had said those words to buy herself time, but deep down, she knew the truth—her situation was far more precarious than she had let on. Still, if she could just hold out a little longer, perhaps Alexander really would find her,

Her fingers brushed her wrist where Cole had gripped her, Claire breathed a sigh of relief and sat back on the bed. Alex had actually come, and he had been looking for her... the skin still tingling from his touch. She knew that Cole’s patience was running thin. She had to be careful, had to play this right, or there wouldn’t be a next chance to escape.

This outcome was not what she had hoped for. But now, she had no other choice but to wait. Thinking about it, she took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down, focusing on her escape strategy.

With a deep breath, Claire lay back down on the bed, her mind racing. There had to be a way out of this, some loophole, some opportunity she hadn’t yet seen. She just needed to bide her time, stay strong, and wait for the right moment.

And when that moment came, she would be ready. In the following days, Claire behaved herself more. Seeing that she no longer had the intention to escape, Matilda, the woman who kept her there, started talking to her. Every day after delivering Claire’s meals, Matilda would go to the nearby woods to collect herbs.

One day, Claire found an opportunity to go with her. Finally, she walked out of the room. The sunlight outside was very bright, making it hard for her to open her eyes. Claire used her hand to shield her eyes, and it took her a while to adjust.

"I’m telling you, if you dare to play any tricks, you won’t be able to leave this place again," Matilda warned in a low voice. Seeing that Claire nodded, Matilda walked ahead, saying, "Hurry up and follow me. There are not many people in the village at this time, but once there are more people, it will be difficult for me to catch you."

Claire understood and quickly followed. However, even though she had been taking Matilda’s medicine, she still couldn’t muster any strength in her body. She could only barely keep up with Matilda’s pace.

Moreover, the slower she was, the more Matilda felt that something was wrong. She frequently turned around to glare at her, seeming impatient.

"Hey, what’s wrong with you?" Matilda couldn’t help but stop and speak in a harsh and disdainful tone.

Claire innocently shook her head. When her gaze fell on a figure behind Matilda, her eyes suddenly widened and pretended to know the person.

The girl Paisley quickly approached Claire and said, "Are you in any kind of trouble, I’m here to help. I saw you needed assistance."

Matilda, caught off guard, turned around and held Claire’s hand tightly. She glared at Paisley and said, "Who are you? Get out of here!"

Paisley, sensing the urgency, responded, "I’m just trying to help."

Seeing the unfriendly expression on the woman’s face and recalling the recent news, Paisley immediately understood what was going on.
