Rebirth to take revenge
Chapter 81: Hire her

Chapter 81: Hire her

Claire pursed her lips, neither agreeing nor disagreeing. Seeing this, Alex sighed and reached out his right hand to touch her head, speaking softly,

"Claire, you’re too kind, in this world, there are always some people who need to be killed cruelly. If we’re too merciful, they’ll step on our faces and act recklessly on our necks. Only by being strong can we deter the weak and protect ourselves" At this point, Alex’s eyes turned cold as he said, "Jack, cannot be allowed to stay!"

After hearing his words, Claire clenched her teeth and made a soft sound of agreement. At this moment, in the hospital corridor, Sheila stood by the window, looking down at the bustling street below. Her face was filled with exhaustion and fatigue, and she hadn’t rested well all night. Today, she received a phone call and hurried to the hospital.

The voice on the other end of the phone made her feel like she had fallen into an ice cave, her whole body cold, and endless regret rose in her heart.

She never thought that the medicine Jack gave her was actually poison. And now, Claire has found out about it and insists on an autopsy. If the autopsy results are really as Claire said, then what awaits her will be imprisonment! As she thought of this, Sheila’s nails dug into her flesh, deeply embedding themselves and piercing her skin.

She still wanted to make a name for herself in City A, to gain recognition from her mother and her family in the provincial capital. She also wanted to shine in the medical industry and become a nationally renowned doctor.

But now...

Sheila slowly closed her eyes, two glistening tears rolling down her cheeks and hitting the floor, turning into dust. Everything had turned to foam because of her wrong choice. She never thought it would end like this.

"Knock, knock, knock."

At this moment, footsteps could be heard in the hallway. She quickly adjusted her expression and turned to look. But when her gaze met Claire’s figure, her eyes suddenly became flustered. She turned around, subconsciously wanting to leave. But just as she moved, she heard Claire call out, "Dr. Sheila, wait." "I have something to say to you."

Sheila’s footsteps paused, and she turned her stiff head, revealing a smile uglier than tears. "I don’t know what Miss Smith wants from me. I don’t think we are familiar enough to have anything to talk about, right?"

Claire’s lips curled up slightly as she slowly walked toward Sheila. "Before Mr. Miller had an accident, we really weren’t familiar," she continued. "Speaking of Mr. Miller, it has nothing to do with me. I didn’t do anything!"

Upon hearing her urgent defense, Claire coldly snorted and sneered, "Is that so? Then why is Jack’s statement different from yours?"

At these words, Sheila suddenly raised her head, her eyes widening as she stared at Claire. "He... how could he tell you that I caused Mr. Miller’s accident?"

"Heh," Claire sneered contemptuously, glancing at her disdainfully. "If what he said isn’t true, why would he bother dragging you down? Do you think you can run away? Even if you escape now, when the storm passes, the Miller family will never let you go. By then, you’ll still be caught and punished by the law."

Sheila’s heart sank into an ice-cold void. Yes, based on her understanding of Jack, he was someone who only cared about his own interests—cunning, scheming, and extremely arrogant. Now that he had failed, he would definitely not give up!

Sheila gritted her teeth and glared at the woman in front of her with resentment. "If you knew all of this, why did you still tell me? Do you want me to be buried with him?"

Claire sneered, "I was just curious. You should know that Jack can’t beat my husband, yet he still dared to provoke him."

"Do you think this has anything to do with me? I’m just a pawn. If you want to blame someone, blame Jack!" Sheila retorted excitedly, looking at her fearlessly. "Miss Smith, you’re not the one who will judge me. When the time comes for the autopsy, I’ll face it. Even if there’s punishment for me, I’ll accept it. But it won’t be you who judges me!"

Claire looked at Sheila’s departing figure with indifference but smiled faintly. "Oh? Are you really willing? I happen to know something about the poison in Mr. Miller’s body. This kind of medicine is used in many hospitals and has a miraculous effect on terminally ill patients."

"But because of its significant side effects, it has never been allowed to be used in this country."

Sheila’s back stiffened, and she turned around in surprise, stuttering, "Side effects? What side effects?"

Claire looked at her with cold eyes and said in a chilly tone, "The patient experiences immense pain before they die."

Sheila was horrified, her face pale, and her eyes full of disbelief. Seeing her reaction, Claire became even more certain of her suspicions. "Dr. Sheila, if I remember correctly, you haven’t studied abroad. You shouldn’t know about this kind of medicine unless you’ve been exposed to it before or someone around you taught it to you."

At these words, Sheila’s body went limp, and she fell to the ground, her face pale and sweat beading on her forehead. "How... how could this be..."

Claire walked over, squatted down beside her, and asked softly, "Dr. Sheila, this person is Anna, right?"

Sheila’s eyes widened, her pupils dilating instantly as if she had been frightened silly, and she muttered, "It’s her."

Claire sighed in relief and slowly stood up. Just as she was about to leave, Sheila grabbed her thigh, begging bitterly, "Dr. Smith, can you save me? I really didn’t know about this. Anna said this medicine could restore Mr. Miller, and when I administered it, it did seem to work. But who knew that in less than two hours, Mr. Miller suddenly started vomiting uncontrollably, his organs rapidly deteriorating, and there was no medicine that could save him. It was Jack who made me blame you! I had no choice because if I admitted it, then I..."

"You would be unemployed and would never be able to return to your family in the capital, right?" Claire looked down at her with no sympathy. "No matter the reason, you caused the death of Mr. Miller."

Sheila lowered her head, biting her lip. Then she looked at Claire with pleading eyes and choked out, "Dr. Smith, if I had known this would cause so much pain to Mr. Miller, I wouldn’t have done it, even if it meant being retaliated against by Jack! All of this is because of Anna, and I’m a victim too! Dr. Smith, since Mr. Miller loves you so much, can you plead for me in front of him?"

Sheila looked at her with hopeful eyes and continued, "It was my impatience and desire for quick success that led to this result. I can accept punishment and will never leave the city for the rest of my life. But can you please not let my mother know about this?"

Looking at her miserable and humble appearance, Claire’s eyes turned cold, and she said, "Dr. Sheila, no matter your reasons, you have committed an irreparable mistake. I have no say in how Alex will deal with you."

"However..." Claire paused, hesitating as she looked at her, and said, "If you can help me provide evidence to accuse Anna, I can consider presenting your argument to him."

Upon hearing this, Sheila was overjoyed. "Good! Thank you, Dr. Smith. Thank you so much..."

It was 2 a.m. outside City A Central Hospital. Alex was sitting in the driver’s seat of a red sports car. Seeing Claire’s slender figure appear, his eyes lit up, and he quickly got out of the car to meet her.

"Why did it take so long? Did she give you a hard time?" Alex asked, taking Claire into his arms. He took off his coat and put it on her, his tone full of concern.

Hearing his caring words, Claire felt warmth in her heart and leaned softly against him, shaking her head gently. "No."

"That’s good." Alex breathed a sigh of relief and reached out to stroke her hair. "You are kind-hearted and innocent, but some things are not suitable for you. This is your last time. You’re not allowed to get involved in such matters again."

Alex stared at her seriously, his voice deep. Claire smiled faintly, not answering his statement directly, but instead saying, "She confessed. That medicine was indeed given by Anna."

Upon hearing this, Alex furrowed his brows. "Why did Anna do this?"

Claire shrugged and sighed, "Because she wants to marry you."

"This girl is too infatuated," Alex remarked, a hint of sarcasm on his lips as he remembered something. "Not only is she infatuated with you, but she’s also obsessed with power and wealth. She’ll stop at nothing to achieve her goals—even murder your grandfather and frame others!" As Claire spoke, her eyes flashed with strong disgust and disdain. Alex, on the other hand, furrowed his brows, lost in thought.
