Rebirth to take revenge -
Chapter 80: I did it
Chapter 80: I did it
"Damn it, troublesome bitch! What a hassle!" Jack muttered under his breath, his frustration reaching its peak. He spun around, preparing to storm off, but his steps faltered when he saw Alex’s figure suddenly halt. Alex turned back to him, eyes flashing with a dangerous gleam that sent a shiver down Jack’s spine. Jack’s heart raced, his instincts screaming at him to flee.
But before he could make a move, Alex’s voice sliced through the tension, cold and menacing. "You’d better stop entertaining any foolish ideas, Jack, or you’ll find yourself facing consequences you’re not prepared for."
Jack’s body went rigid, fear gripping him tightly. He wanted to run, but his legs felt like they were rooted to the ground. Alex’s threat hung heavy in the air, causing Jack to break out in a cold sweat. Without another word, Alex turned and led his entourage away, his posture radiating confidence and authority.
Jack watched as Alex walked away, his face twisting in a mixture of frustration and resentment. He clenched his fists, nails digging into his palms, trying to control the storm of emotions raging inside him. He knew he couldn’t afford to act rashly; Alex had the power and influence to make his life extremely difficult. Jack took a deep, shuddering breath, trying to suppress his anger, and followed his two bodyguards out of the area.
At the entrance of Central Hospital, Claire and Alex faced each other, the tension between them almost palpable. Their eyes locked, and for a moment, everything else seemed to fade into the background. Alex broke the silence first, his voice calm but firm. "Ask whatever you need to know."
Claire hesitated, a sigh escaping her lips. "That’s your past, Alex. It’s a lie to say it doesn’t affect me, but I’m not here to dwell on that. What matters now is that I’m not the same person you knew before. My medical skills might not be perfect, but I was confident in my diagnosis of Elder Miller’s condition. That’s why I insisted on treating him."
Her tone grew more resolute as she continued, "And I even gave him life-saving treatment..."
Alex’s eyes widened in disbelief. "What? Are you serious?"
Claire nodded, her expression earnest as she recounted the details of her actions. She explained how she had intervened with a crucial treatment that ultimately saved the elder’s life. As Alex listened, his face grew increasingly serious. After she finished, he was silent for a moment, absorbing the gravity of her words. Finally, he met her gaze with genuine gratitude. "Thank you for saving my grandfather’s life, Claire."
Claire was momentarily taken aback by his words. She shook her head, a faint smile on her lips. "As a doctor, it’s my duty to help those in need. I don’t expect anything in return."
Alex’s gaze softened, though he struggled with his own feelings of guilt and regret. He remembered how pale and exhausted Claire had looked after her treatment, and it pained him to think that he had doubted her. His mistrust had been unfair, especially considering the sacrifices she had made.
Claire noticed Alex’s conflicted expression and decided to lighten the mood. "What’s the matter? Feeling a bit guilty, are we?"
Alex’s face turned a shade of pink as he looked away, unsure of how to respond. Claire’s teasing only added to his discomfort, and he found himself unable to meet her eyes.
Claire chuckled softly, enjoying the rare sight of him flustered. "If you really feel guilty, why not compensate me for the treatment?" she suggested with a playful grin.
Alex’s expression darkened slightly, his mood shifting. "Are you saying you want money for treating my family?"
Claire shrugged, her tone light but firm. "Treatment and compensation are two separate things. Besides, who’s going to cover the debt I owe you?"
Without another word, Alex reached into his pocket and pulled out a golden card. He extended it towards her with a serious expression. "Consider your debt settled. Take this card."
Claire’s curiosity was piqued as she examined the card. It was unlike anything she had ever seen. "What kind of card is this?"
Alex’s smile was warm and affectionate. "You’ve been my wife for quite a while, and I haven’t given you any allowance. Use this card for your expenses. Anything you need, just use it."
Claire’s cheeks flushed a delicate pink. She looked at the card and then back at Alex, her eyes widening. "I don’t need your money, Alex! I can earn my own way."
Alex didn’t take the card back. Instead, he refocused on their current situation. "The autopsy team will arrive soon. We need to be prepared. And be cautious, Claire. Don’t let them find any reason to cause trouble, especially Sheila. If I’m not mistaken, she’s been bribed by Jack."
Claire’s thoughts raced as she considered Sheila’s suspicious behavior. It made sense now—she had been influenced by Jack. Reflecting on Sheila’s demeanor at the clinic, Claire realized that her hesitance might have been a sign of Jack’s manipulation. She took a deep breath, steeling herself. "Before we proceed, can I speak to Sheila first?"
Alex’s expression tightened, his gaze growing serious. "Why do you want to see her?"
Claire gathered her thoughts. "I saw Sheila at the entrance of the clinic before the incident. She seemed out of place and nervous. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but she left with Anna after a brief conversation. I suspect that might have been when she met Jack."
Alex remained impassive, his eyes betraying nothing. "You’re correct. That was when it happened."
Claire blinked in surprise. "If you knew, why didn’t you intervene? You had people monitoring Jack’s ward, didn’t you?"
Alex remained calm, his demeanor unchanged. "Sheila’s situation is complicated. Her family holds significant power in the provincial capital, and she’s been trying to regain her status there. I chose her to treat my grandfather partly to give her that opportunity."
Claire’s eyes widened in shock. "So, you were aware Sheila met with Jack? And you didn’t stop it?"
Alex’s calm demeanor persisted as Claire’s grip on his collar tightened. "I didn’t intervene because I wanted to see what decision Sheila would make. By siding with Jack, she has chosen to be my enemy. As for my grandfather..."
He paused, a pained expression crossing his face. His voice dropped to a whisper, barely audible. "It was his choice."
Claire’s grip on his collar loosened as she stared at him, stunned. "What are you saying? He died from poisoning—"
Alex interrupted softly. "I was the one who administered it."
Claire’s entire body shook with the revelation. The truth was almost too much to bear, but the anguish in Alex’s eyes made it clear he was speaking honestly. He pulled her into his arms, his voice tender and filled with sorrow. "He was suffering immensely, Claire. His condition was beyond repair."
Tears welled up in Claire’s eyes as she comprehended the full extent of the situation. Despite her efforts to save Elder Miller, the damage had been too severe, and keeping him alive only prolonged his suffering. The weight of the truth felt like a heavy stone pressing against her chest, making it difficult to breathe. Her thoughts raced, and a sudden realization struck her, causing her to stiffen.
Alex noticed her sudden change in demeanor and released her gently, concern evident in his eyes. "What’s wrong?"
Claire’s voice trembled as she spoke. "What about the autopsy? If they discover the poisoning, won’t you be in danger?"
Alex’s reassuring smile was gentle as he stroked her back. "No one knows about this except for you. And Sheila administered the poison with Jack’s knowledge. If it comes to light that my grandfather was poisoned, Sheila will be more at risk than anyone."
Relief washed over Claire as she let out a long, shaky breath. Her concern eased, but she looked up at Alex with a newfound determination. "Do you have any other plans?"
Alex’s lips curled into a smirk, his eyes sparkling with a mixture of resolve and strategy. "Jack is like a cornered animal now, and he won’t be able to escape for long. Once the autopsy results are released, I will ensure that he is removed from the Miller family. What do you think of that?"
Claire nodded, a steely resolve in her eyes. The battle was far from over, but with Alex’s plan in motion, there was a glimmer of hope. She was prepared to face whatever came next, ready to see justice served and the truth revealed.
Claire took a deep breath, steeling herself for the challenges ahead. She knew that the road would be fraught with obstacles, but with Alex by her side and their plan set in motion, she felt a renewed sense of purpose. The fight for justice was only just beginning, and she was ready to see it through to the end.
Alex’s confident demeanor reassured her as he continued, "We have to stay vigilant. This situation is delicate, and every move we make must be calculated. Sheila’s involvement with Jack is just one piece of a larger puzzle, and we need to stay one step ahead."
Claire nodded, her determination unshaken. "Understood. I’ll make sure to keep a close eye on Sheila and any other potential threats. We can’t afford any missteps."
As the two prepared to confront the impending investigation and potential fallout, their resolve only strengthened. The stakes were high, and the path forward was uncertain, but together, Claire and Alex faced the challenge with unwavering commitment. The truth would be uncovered, and justice would prevail, no matter the cost.
