Rebirth to take revenge -
Chapter 77: The old man is dead
Chapter 77: The old man is dead
At the Residence in the Western Medical Clinic
Thinking of what happened today, Claire felt mixed emotions. She knew she had been too cruel to him, but for her, there was no choice. The silence in the room made Claire think more deeply. Suddenly, there was a sound at the door. Claire’s heart tightened as she looked at the door vigilantly and said, "Housekeeper? Is that you?"
After her voice fell, there was another sound at the door, but no response. Just as Claire was about to get up to look, the door opened. A familiar figure slowly walked towards her. She looked up and saw that it was Alex; she couldn’t help but be startled for a moment. In the next second, she quickly lowered her head.
"What are you doing here?" she asked in a cold tone. Alex approached Claire, looking down at her condescendingly. He reached out and pinched Claire’s chin, forcing her to look up at him. The two stared at each other, and the air became tense.
Alex walked slowly toward her, breaking the dull atmosphere. Claire wanted to struggle to shake off his grip, but it was all in vain.
"Let go of me," she glared at Alex angrily and roared.
"I won’t let go. Tell me, why are you avoiding me?" Alex tried his best to suppress the anger in his heart, but the moment he saw her, he couldn’t help losing his temper.
"I’m happy. What does it have to do with you?" Claire irritably waved his hand away, turned around, and refused to look at Alex. Seeing Claire’s reaction, Alex frowned, grabbed her arm, and forcefully pulled her to his side. She tried to struggle but was caught off guard and fell to the floor. Her knee hit the hard tiles, causing her face to turn pale from the pain.
The incident happened suddenly, and Alex turned pale. He quickly let go of Claire’s hand.
"How are you?" Claire clutched her knee, her face filled with embarrassment, and she didn’t say a word. Alex was stunned, as if he had thought of something. He immediately bent down, took Claire’s hand, and looked at the swollen bruise on her leg with a worried expression.
"Why are you so stubborn? You like to kneel so much, huh?" His tone was much gentler, with a bit of reproach.
Claire didn’t speak but turned her head stubbornly, refusing to look at Alex. He reached out to hold her leg and gently rubbed it.
"Does it hurt?" he asked softly.
Claire still didn’t speak. Before, she had imagined countless scenarios of meeting him again, even the possibility of never seeing him. But she didn’t expect it to be like this.
"What a stubborn temper," Alex smiled bitterly, then coaxed, "Okay, okay, I won’t force you. Go home with me."
After speaking, he stood up, helped Claire off the ground, took her hand, and walked toward the door. Claire couldn’t break free and didn’t bother to make any more trouble, so she let Alex hold her hand as they walked toward the door. As they passed, the servants Nelson had sent to take care of her cast surprised glances at them. After he pulled Claire into the car, they drove away from the villa smoothly.
The atmosphere in the car was exceptionally silent. Alex glanced at Claire, saw her head down and motionless, and couldn’t help frowning. Just as he was about to say something, his phone rang. He took it out and saw it was a call from his mother.
Alex hesitated for a moment but finally answered the call. "Mom? Why are you calling so late? What’s the matter?"
He kept an eye on Claire from the corner of his eye. Seeing her freeze, he couldn’t help but sound a bit more nervous.
"Alex, come back and take a look—something serious happened at the hospital!" Emma’s voice was loud, filled with anxiety. Alex’s heart trembled, and he hurriedly asked,
"What’s the matter?"
"The old man... something happened to him."
A piercing screech of brakes filled the air as the car came to a sudden stop. Sitting in the passenger seat, Claire was thrown forward by the sudden inertia. Her whole body leaned forward and almost hit the windshield. Her face turned pale, and her beautiful eyes were filled with anger as she looked at Alex and said indignantly,
"Alex, are you trying to kill me?"
Alex’s face changed, and his deep gaze looked at her as if struggling. Faced with her anger, he didn’t argue back, which was rare for him. Instead, with a tone of guilt, he said,
"Claire, can you accompany me to the hospital?"
Upon hearing this, Claire’s eyes flickered a few times. Then, gritting her teeth, she said,
"Don’t you distrust my medical skills? Now you want to take me to the hospital, how—"
"The old man has passed away." Before Claire could finish, Alex interrupted her coldly. He looked at her with complicated eyes, unsure how to express himself. He remained silent for a long time before slowly saying,
"Claire, I really want to trust you, but I haven’t found any concrete evidence yet to prove that this is Jack’s conspiracy."
As he spoke, Alex clenched the steering wheel, his fingers turning white, and said,
"Claire, the old man’s time is running out. Even without this incident, he wouldn’t have much time left."
"So even if it’s your mistake, I won’t blame you," Alex turned his head and looked at her with a hint of tenderness in his eyes, and said softly. After pondering for a while, Claire finally nodded. She raised her hand and patted Alex’s shoulder, comforting him, "In that case, you should go."
"It’s not far from home; I’ll get off here." Saying that, Claire opened the car door and got out.
"Claire!"
Seeing this, Alex immediately called out, his eyes filled with worry. Claire paused slightly, turned her head to look at him, and asked, "What’s wrong?"
"Take a taxi back; it’s safer," Alex stared at her delicate face and couldn’t help but remind her.
"Okay," Claire replied, then walked toward the bus stop on the side of the road. Watching her gradually disappearing figure, Alex frowned. For some reason, he always felt that something was off. After Claire left, he continued to drive forward, no longer paying attention to her.
After getting out of the car, Claire walked to the nearby bus stop and waved goodbye to Alex. Watching in the rearview mirror, Alex’s gaze remained complicated. After pondering for a moment, he continued driving, no longer looking back.
Claire put down her arm, and the smile on her lips disappeared. Not holding a grudge was probably Alex’s greatest tolerance for her. But ultimately, he still didn’t choose to trust her.
"This feeling is very uncomfortable." From the perspective of a wife, what Alex did was already the best he could do. But as a doctor, she would never allow others to ruin her reputation like this. Now that Grandpa Miller has passed away and the procedures have been completed, the body is about to be cremated. If she just waits and does nothing, she is afraid she won’t even have a chance to grasp the last opportunity.
Claire’s eyes sank, and she quickly hailed a taxi coming from afar. The car stopped beside her, and Claire opened the door and sat in the passenger seat, whispering, "City A Central Hospital."
Special Care Ward
All members of the Miller family were present. Alex arrived late, and the moment he appeared, everyone automatically made way for him to pass. His expression was gentle but tired, yet his steps were firm. On the bed, Grandpa’s body was covered with a white cloth, lying quietly.
Alex stood at the head of the bed, staring blankly at his grandpa without saying a word. Jack, on the other hand, was full of pride, showing no sadness at all over his father’s death. Alex’s mother, Emma, cried so much that she was in tears.
"Mr. Miller, Grandpa Miller has passed away. Please accept my condolences," Sheila walked slowly to Alex’s side and whispered. Alex slowly lowered his head, his eyes slightly red, and his hoarse voice murmured,
"I understand. You all can leave first."
Upon hearing this, Sheila’s eyes flashed with surprise, and she instinctively looked toward Jack. This action immediately made Alex narrow his eyes. Jack noticed and immediately stiffened, lowering his head. He cursed inwardly, feeling both angry and ashamed. Seeing this, Sheila quickly realized her mistake and stammered,
"Um, Mr. Miller, after a person dies, their body can produce a lot of bacteria. I suggest you not—"
"I said get out!" Alex coldly interrupted her, his gaze icy. Sheila trembled all over and didn’t dare say another word. She quickly nodded and instructed the others to leave.
But Jack was unwilling; he didn’t dare say anything with so many people present. He could only leave in frustration. After everyone left, Alex sat by his grandfather’s bedside and took his cold, frail hand.
"Grandfather, who should I believe?" he murmured, his eyes full of struggle. Sheila’s instinctive action just now had once again made him suspicious.
