Rebirth to take revenge -
Chapter 128: Back to the Clinic
Chapter 128: Back to the Clinic
"Leander, Mommy really has something important to do now," Claire explained.
"When Mommy is done, Mommy will take Leander out to play, okay?"
"But Mommy, I really like being with you!" Leander protested.
"But Leander is a boy; you can’t stick to Mommy all the time," Claire said seriously.
"Besides, if Mommy goes out and meets bad people, what should we do?" Claire pretended to be stern, pinching Leander’s soft and tender face. She added, "So, you can’t go out with Mommy, okay?"
"I can protect Mommy!" Leander insisted.
"But Mommy doesn’t need Leander’s protection, so Leander can’t go out with Mommy," Claire explained.
"Leander, Mommy really has something very important to do. Listen to Mommy and be good. When Mommy comes back, she’ll bring you many fun things, okay?" Claire coaxed, though she was worried inside.
If it weren’t for her and Alex’s situation, she wouldn’t have had to leave home.
"But..." Leander hesitated, biting his lower lip. "Is Mommy really okay?"
Claire sighed and nodded, losing patience.
She knew that Leander was still too young. She shouldn’t have let him get involved in such a complicated situation, but...
"Leander, be good. Mommy won’t have any problems. Just promise Mommy that you’ll be obedient and wait for me to come back, okay?"
Seeing that Mommy was unhappy, Leander didn’t dare to ask any more questions. So, he just nodded and promised, "Then Leander will wait for Mommy to come back."
After saying this, Leander seemed afraid that Mommy wouldn’t believe him, so he added, "Leander will definitely wait for Mommy to come back!"
"Leander is the best."
"Mommy, please come back soon."
"Mommy will definitely come back soon."
Finally, Leander smiled and said, "Mommy, go and do your work. I’ll be obedient and wait for you at home."
Claire smiled and kissed Leander’s forehead before leaving.
As soon as Claire left, Alex walked out from the shadows with a stern expression, clearly displeased.
"You little brat, how could you compromise?"
"Weren’t you just promising Daddy to refuse Mommy?"
Leander pursed his lips and said, "Daddy, Mommy will get angry!"
"You little traitor!" Alex was so angry that he was itching to teach Leander a lesson.
"Okay, Daddy. Mommy isn’t angry anymore. She just said that when she comes back, she will buy many beautiful toys for Leander," Leander said.
"Besides, Dad is so capable that even if Mom is gone, he will protect her," Leander added, looking at Alex with admiration. At such a young age, he already knew how to flatter his father.
Sure enough, anyone would be delighted to be praised by their own son.
Alex nodded. Although he didn’t want Claire to be in danger, he could only go along with her for now and educate her when she came back.
Claire walked out of the room and saw Alex smoking on the balcony.
Alex was wearing a white shirt and black trousers, standing under the sunlight, emitting an air of elegance, like a prince.
Claire couldn’t help but stare at him until he put out the cigarette and tossed it away. She quickly looked away.
"Is everything packed?" Alex turned around and looked at Claire with a gentle expression.
Claire was stunned for a few seconds, then quickly nodded and said, "Yes."
"Let’s go."
"I’ll walk you there."
After speaking, Alex took Claire’s small hand, and the two walked down the stairs side by side.
Claire was led by Alex, feeling the warmth from his hand, which made her heart beat faster. She looked down at her hand and felt a little annoyed. She was actually feeling shy and was avoiding it shyly. Claire cursed herself for being useless in her heart.
Alex glanced at Claire and saw her head lowered, guessing her current mood, and smiled slightly. Claire didn’t know what Alex was thinking and assumed he was mocking her, feeling embarrassed. She quickly said, "Let’s go."
Claire spoke and took the lead, walking toward the door. Alex followed closely, opened the car door, and got in. He closed the car door, turned to look at Claire, and asked, "Where to?"
Claire heard this and said, "Anywhere."
Alex thought for a moment and asked, "To the clinic?"
Claire hesitated for a moment and said, "Okay."
"Alright."
Alex nodded and drove toward the western suburbs. The two of them remained silent along the way. Claire looked at the passing scenery outside the car window, feeling mixed emotions and not knowing what to say. She lowered her head and played with her phone.
Suddenly, Alex’s voice broke the silence, "Claire, there are still many of your things in the clinic. Go and get them."
Claire was slightly stunned, then nodded.
"In the three years you were gone, many patients still came specifically to see you."
"At first, I thought they were talking about Dr. Smith, Anna Smith."
"Now it seems that it’s you," Alex said, his tone flat but with a hint of persistence. "I know better than anyone whose daughter you are."
Upon hearing Alex’s words, Claire’s face flashed with discomfort.
"There are many people in the Western Medical Clinic who came for you. I still hope that you won’t give up so easily," Alex continued.
Listening to his words, Claire fell silent.
After a while, Claire spoke, "I understand." She knew that Alex was doing this for her own good.
Alex didn’t say anything more, and the car fell into silence again. Claire looked out the window, and memories from many years ago flooded her mind. She was only six or seven years old at the time.
Her mother’s death had hit her hard, and at such a young age, she had fallen into a state of hatred. If it weren’t for Alex finding her in time, she might have lived in pain for the rest of her life.
Now, Mariah was dead, but the hatred had not disappeared. Gradually, Claire had forgotten her original intention of studying medicine, even to take her revenge.
Thinking of the Western Medical Clinic, her past achievements in the medical field, her talent, and Alex’s careful guidance, she was filled with gratitude. Alex was right. She couldn’t let him down.
"I’ll stay at the Western Medical Clinic these days."
"Trouble Alex to arrange my visit," Claire took a deep breath and said softly.
"No problem," Alex replied readily, as if he had already prepared everything. Claire nodded and didn’t say anything more.
The car stopped in the western suburbs, and Alex and Claire got out of the car. At the door of the clinic, they saw a familiar figure. Looking at the dim eyes of the old woman, Lily, Claire’s heart sank. She remembered that, in the office, Lily had advised her.
Now, after several years, Lily looked like a dying person. Claire couldn’t believe that the old woman who used to be so kind and lovely to her had become like this. She bit her lip and looked at Alex. Alex noticed Claire’s gaze and turned back to nod at her. Claire knew that he had agreed to her request.
She approached the old woman and said with a hint of guilt in her voice, "How are you feeling?"
The old woman’s eyes flickered with surprise at Claire’s words, but she quickly regained her composure. She shook her head and looked at Claire. Lily’s attitude made Claire even more distressed, but she knew there was no turning back.
Claire felt even more uncomfortable. She couldn’t help but clench her fists and forcibly suppress her emotions.
"I’m sorry, I should have been the one to treat your illness all along," Claire said, her voice trailing off.
The old woman shook her head, interrupting her, "It’s okay. You saved my life."
The old woman’s words made Claire feel even more uneasy. She looked at Alex with red eyes and asked, "Mr. Miller, may I take her inside to speak privately for a moment?"
Alex nodded and said, "Sure, go ahead." With that, he turned and left.
Just then, a man in a suit approached the old woman and looked at Claire warily. "Who are you?" he asked.
Claire paused for a moment and replied, "I’m Claire, here to visit your elderly lady for medical treatment."
The man frowned and said coldly, "The old lady doesn’t see strangers."
Claire felt a pang in her heart at his words. Before she could respond, the old woman spoke up, "Josh, this is the person who saved my life. Don’t be rude."
The man frowned but said nothing more. His eyes swept over Claire as he added, "Since she’s a benefactor, I’ll go in with you."
Claire could sense the man’s wariness, but she didn’t mind. She knew he was only being cautious. She smiled gently and said, "Thank you."
The man frowned slightly at her words but followed her into the clinic.
Alex led Claire into his office, which had previously been hers. Once inside, Claire helped the old woman to the sofa and said, "Grandma, rest for a while. I’ll treat you in a moment."
The old woman nodded and gestured for her to proceed.
