"Mr. President, are you serious?" Gao Yang burst out.

He quickly apologized, ’I’m sorry, it was a slip of the tongue,’ noticing his stern gaze.

"Please, Gao Yang, I will feel at peace if you accompany her home," Xin Yan pleaded.

"Alright, Mr. President," he acknowledged without hesitation as he left the car.

Li Qiang raised an eyebrow, surprised that he acknowledged merely due to Xin Yan’s pleas. He couldn’t deny it; as petty as it seemed, he felt deeply jealous.

Xin Yan’s gaze lingered, eyes crinkling as she remarked, "I know what you’re up to."

"I’m not up to anything," he shrugged helplessly.

He informed the chauffeur, ’To the old residence, please.’ The chauffeur nodded and quickly exited the parking lot.

Chen Wenling gently rubbed her arms. She could sense the change in the weather. Her eyes widened as Gao Yang came into view.

"Gao Yang?" With uncertainty in her voice, she called out.

He coughed dryly and murmured, "Hmm." He never would have expected that he would be an escort to a girl.

"Why are you here? Weren’t you following the Presidents?" She had no clue why he was there.

She checked the time on her wristwatch, noting that her ride would arrive shortly, and she had no intention of entertaining him.

"President Xin requested that I walk with you home, as she’s worried about your safety," he conveyed to her.

Since she wasn’t paying attention to what he was saying, she replied, ’Then you can wait.... What did you just say?’

’President Xin instructed me to take you home.’ he shut his eyes, clenched his teeth, and forced the words out.

Chen Wenling gaped in disbelief.

She pointed out, "But my ride is almost here."

"The President instructed me to ensure your return, so I’ll join you regardless of your transportation," he told her, and she instantly relented.

She swallowed her words instead of arguing with him. The few days she spent planning the wedding with him were enough for her to know that he wasn’t the type of person who would lose in an argument.

They stood there for almost ten minutes until the ride arrived. They both got into the car, and the driver sped away.

She felt awkward because of the strange silence that engulfed the atmosphere. Feeling self-conscious for some reason, she chose to sit very close to the door.

After forty minutes, they got to her place. The neighborhood was remote, yet the security was just average.

Gao Yang surveyed the entire area and frowned while she settled the bill with the driver. This was not a suitable place for her to live.

After the chauffeur departed, Chen Wenling sincerely thanked him, saying, ’Thank you for joining me. You had the chance to refuse, yet you still showed up. I’m truly grateful.’

"How long have you been living here?" he asked, surprising her with the sudden question.

As she hesitates, he arches his brows in curiosity, causing her to respond hastily, ’For about three years now.’

"Have there been any crime cases?" He inquired. He felt uneasy about this neighborhood, especially since she was a single lady.

’Let’s take a walk while we chat,’ she suggested.

He nodded, and they headed to her place.

"Yes, we have had incidents of crimes like rape, murder, and theft, to name a few," she replied to his question.

Gao Yang’s eyes flickered at the mention of the word ’rape.’

"You really think it’s appropriate to stay here?" He asked her as he wondered what was wrong with her.

Why didn’t she pay attention to her health and safety? Crime levels were high in the neighborhood, but she felt at home.

Chen Wenling shook her head helplessly. "I attempted to terminate my lease, yet the landlord imposes a significant penalty fee, and even if I agree to pay it, he refuses to let me exit."

She considered it as well. She faced risks staying here. Likewise, she found herself targeted several times, but was fortunate enough to evade the local goons.

Furthermore, she also talked to her landlord, but he refused. She felt quite exasperated, to say the least.

"Why don’t I talk to your landlord for you?" Though he didn’t outright say it, his concern for her intensified.

"Could you handle that for me? It’s fine, don’t worry. I’ll get through the following months until my lease ends," she assured, resolved not to take advantage of his kindness.

"Why though?" Currently, they were already standing at her flat.

The flat wasn’t particularly large. It was enough for her alone.

She unlocked her door and turned to face him, saying, ’Because he finances the crimes in the neighborhood, no one dares to offend him. Therefore, I act carefully when he’s around.’

"Have you tried reporting it to the police? They have to be aware of what’s occurring," Gao Yang remarked with a frown. He struggled to understand why she wasn’t able to conceive this notion.

"It’s not that simple. Here, all the police fully comply with his commands," she stated. ’Are you planning to come inside, or are you going home?’

He glanced around her tiny apartment and saw the fatigue in her face, then shook his head, ’I’m going to head home. There’s an important meeting scheduled for tomorrow.’

"Alright then, good night and thank you once again," she said as she walked into her apartment and shut the door with a loud slam.

He let out a small laugh. He wished to enter, yet he noticed her exhaustion. A flicker sparked in his eyes as he pondered her words.

He picked up some of Li Qiang’s intelligence and ruthlessness after spending several years with him.

He planned to handle the landlord and all of his associates. He preferred she doesn’t remain in that place any longer.
