Chapter 103: Chapter 103 Selling Fruit

The moment she thought about the fiery days she was living now, she hated Gu Junming even more!

Looking at the newspaper in her hand, she thought to herself, no matter what, she had to know if Gu Junming was going to take Sun Chan’s family along.

If it really is that wretch, she must find a way to break them up. If I’m not happy, you can’t be either!

When Bai Chuan went downstairs, he saw his granddaughter grim-faced while staring at the newspaper, not knowing what she was thinking. But he didn’t approach her, as long as she successfully married Wang Hu, everything could be discussed. Her obsession with Gu Junming would naturally fade once he got married.

Sun Chan over there didn’t know about Bai Fanglan’s curse and got up around three o’clock.

She first started steaming the rice, then tidied up her bicycle, taking three types of fruit to sell, about ten pounds each, placed them in a basket, covered them with a small blanket, and secured them on the back seat of the bike, then put the scale inside as well.

Sun Chan had been saving up change during this time, always using whole bills when buying things, keeping all the change in her pocket to use later for giving out change. As she kindled the fire, she pondered which route to take today.

When Guihua got up, Sun Chan had already sliced the potatoes, ready to put them in the pot.

"You got up without waking me? Why are you so diligent? Let me cook! You go freshen up." Guihua quickly went over.

Sun Chan chuckled, "I’m just used to it." She washed her face, then wrote a letter to Yang Liu, planning to ask her if she wanted to partner with Guihua to do business, and also requested her to greet Mr. Yan on her behalf.

Mr. Yan was very kind to Sun Chan, and when she left, she didn’t inform him, which made her feel a bit guilty. She placed the letter carefully, planning to mail it when passing the post office.

Once the meal was ready, the two of them had a simple meal by the stove.

"Shall I go with you?" Guihua seemed a little uneasy.

Sun Chan shook her head with a smile, "No need, I only took ten pounds of each fruit, if I can’t sell them all, I’ll just come back. You should focus on your own tasks. The kids need proper attention too, right?"

Guihua sighed, "You know, I have a few brothers helping out here. But you have to rely on yourself."

"You guys are helping me as well. I’m fine." Sun Chan replied indifferently; she was full of energy now.

Having eaten, Sun Chan wrapped a scarf around her face. It was already November, the weather was quite cold, and given that she would be going home with Gu Junming over the weekend, she didn’t want her face to get too chilled.

She loaded the fruits onto her bicycle and went out, wandering through the streets selling fruits and tomatoes. Thanks to Han Dong’s assistance, she got them all at cost price, so her fruits were two cents cheaper per pound than those at the mall, selling for a dollar a pound.

At first, she felt embarrassed to shout out, but after a while, it became unnecessary, she couldn’t just wait for people to come and ask.

Back then, people’s living conditions weren’t great, fruit was considered a luxury, but her fruits were quite popular due to their lower prices.

The men were at work, while women and elderly folks would buy a few pieces for their kids to taste.

Sun Chan was busy weighing and collecting money, feeling quite delighted.

Her bicycle wasn’t very well maintained, making it heavy and slow, so she decided to stay in the nearby bungalow area and shout slowly, not planning to go too far. With over thirty pounds of fruit, more than half of it was sold quickly, surprisingly good business.

Just as she was shouting, a woman in a floral shirt came out from inside, "How much for the persimmons?"

"One dollar a pound." Sun Chan replied with a smile.

The woman frowned, "That’s expensive, fifteen ounces for two pounds, I’ll buy more." She said, grabbing two persimmons.

Sun Chan shook her head with a smile, "I wouldn’t make any profit doing that, I can’t sell them like that." She turned to leave.

The woman pouted disapprovingly, "Swindler."

As Sun Chan was walking away, she suddenly noticed a pile of scrap iron in the woman’s yard, mainly pieces, wires, and some steel cables she couldn’t name, feeling intrigued. She turned back and laughed, "Why do you have so many scrap materials at home?"

"My husband works as a machinist; he brought some unused materials from work. Why, do you want them?"

Sun Chan chuckled, "Yes, if you’re willing to give them to me, I’ll trade with you."

At the time, iron was worth twenty cents, but Sun Chan knew that within a few months, the construction industry here would rapidly develop, and scrap iron prices would soar quickly, peaking at one dollar twenty per pound. Many people made fortunes by collecting scrap iron, seeing the woman’s yard filled with such materials sparked her idea.

She considered accumulating them first, then selling them when the prices rose.

The woman was naturally willing, "My husband brings these home every now and then, but the scrap collectors don’t want them, they’re heavier than wine bottles yet worthless. If you want them, I’ll give them to you."

"Alright! I’ll give you more."

The woman quickly agreed and went inside to fetch the scrap iron.

Sun Chan calculated them at twenty-two cents each, and with all the odds and ends weighing a little over twenty pounds, Sun Chan calculated four and a half pounds of fruit for her, also gifting her two large persimmons.

The woman carried a big bag of fruits, "You really are generous! Be sure to come by again, my husband brings them home every so often."

Sun Chan agreed and pushed the bike to leave. Such heavy materials naturally needed to be put back at home.

She pushed the bike to the alley entrance, leaned against a pole to rest, and prepared to take out the keys. Unexpectedly, the bike suddenly clattered, almost falling to the ground, scaring Sun Chan into quickly supporting it. If it had fallen, it would be quite challenging to pick it up.

Just when it seemed hopeless, fortunately, a big hand reached over, held the bike handle, and kept it upright. Sun Chan was about to express her gratitude, but upon turning around, she smiled right away.

Gu Junming smiled warmly at her, Sun Chan was both surprised and delighted, "Why are you here?"

"I have a mission, but I came to see you first."

"You’re so busy, you shouldn’t have."

"It’s alright, I have an hour." Gu Junming glanced at his watch and pushed the bike forward, "I also wanted to see what your place looks like."

"But we haven’t tidied up well, I hope you don’t mind." Sun Chan cheerfully took out the keys to open the door.

Gu Junming looked around; although it wasn’t a large house, the ventilation was quite good, and it wasn’t damp; the coal blocks in the coal cellar seemed few, but there was still plenty of grain and vegetables inside. This slightly reassured him.
