Chapter 244: Chapter 244 Crying with a Sad Face Chapter 244: Chapter 244 Crying with a Sad Face Big Bull glared at her, “Do you really think I’m stupid?”
“You are indeed a fool,” thought Lady Li to herself, but she dared not speak these words aloud. She did not want to be thrown off the carriage like the last time. Her feet couldn’t take any more trouble, and being thrown off again would definitely leave her needing crutches for life.
“Big Brother is not foolish. He is the smartest, handsomest man in Mo Family Village. He must see that I am being wronged, right?” Lady Li pleaded with Big Bull, hoping he would let her off the hook.
“This wretched woman, getting more and more skilled at blindly spouting nonsense with her eyes closed,” several women sneered dismissively.
“Oh, you’re trying to deceive me again!” When Big Bull heard what the women said, he really got angry and suddenly stood up.
Lady Li shivered uncontrollably, “Big Brother, don’t trouble yourself, I’ll handle it, I’ll handle it myself.” With a cry in her voice, she faced the front of the wagon and wailed desperately, “Big Brother Yu, Big Brother Yu, stop the carriage, stop, I need to get off.”
The moment Coachman Yu, who was driving outside, heard her, he stopped the ox cart: “Whoa!”
“Lady Li, what tricks are you playing now?” His tone was full of impatience.
“Big Brother Yu, I’m getting off,” Lady Li cried, a pitiful look on her face, clumsily tumbling out of the carriage with her arms full of bundles.
“What’s wrong with you? One moment you want to get on, the next you want to get off. Is this fun for you?”
With her lips pouted and face mournful, Lady Li thought to herself that she didn’t want to get off either, but there were two Plague Gods on board. If she didn’t get off, she would be thrown off, and that would end even worse. Helplessly, with Big Bull glaring menacingly at her from on the carriage, she could only bow her head and remain silent.
“Now that you’ve ridden half the way, you still have to pay,” Coachman Yu extended his large hand towards Lady Li, clearly intending to collect the fare.
“What?” Lady Li shrieked suddenly, “I haven’t even gotten back to the village, and you still want to charge me?”
“It’s not that I didn’t let you ride; you chose not to. Besides, since you rode nearly half the way, of course, you have to pay.” Coachman Yu’s face was uncompromising; he had already heard from another carriage driver that Lady Li was notorious for dodging the fare.
“We’re all from the same village. You shouldn’t be doing this; it’s really unfair,” Lady Li, not wanting to pay, kept stalling.
Big Bull, tired of waiting in the carriage and seeing no signs of departure, finally lost his temper and yelled, “Hey! You fat hag, are you purposely trying not to let us go home? Making a fuss over a copper coin, claiming to be rich in the village all the time–it’s just hilarious.”
Hearing Big Bull’s voice, Lady Li became flustered and hurriedly threw the bundles in her arms to the roadside, fumbling through her clothes. She finally pulled out a Copper Coin and handed it to the carriage driver.
“Hmph!”
The carriage driver scoffed coldly, took the Copper Coin, cracked his whip, and drove the ox cart away without a second glance at Lady Li: “Giddyup!”
The ox cart slowly started moving and soon disappeared along the winding path.
Lady Li, holding her bundles, stood in the middle of the road, feeling utterly desolate. With so many things to carry, when would she ever get home?
Back at home, Madam Xie was delighted to learn about Xuexue’s collaboration with the restaurant, but her mood soon turned sour.
“Xuexue, we don’t have many mudfish left, do we? Where are we going to find enough mudfish for Shopkeeper Fan?” Lady Li anxiously looked at Xuexue.
Indeed, with winter having passed and spring approaching, it would be raining more frequently soon. Every creek would swell with water, making mudfish harder to catch. Madam Xie’s worries were not unfounded.
