Chapter 1470: Chapter 1442: It was settled in just six days
If this matter hadn’t involved her own mum, Kiara might have considered reporting and shutting them down a job well done.
But now that someone’s fist had hit a member of her family in the face, if she didn’t get it sorted, she was really taking Society Kiara for a fool.
Mario Yuno didn’t know exactly how Kiara would handle it, but whenever his daughter-in-law spoke with confidence about a problem, even if she was wearing a twenty-dollar inferior suit from a street stall, it couldn’t hide the glow of her impending success.
"How long do you plan to take to wrap this up?" asked Mario Yuno.
Kiara kissed her baby’s little face and answered calmly, "No more than one week at most."
In fact, it took Kiara less than six days to achieve a perfect closure.
Early on the sixth day, trouble erupted at this place.
Actually, since last night, the headquarters had felt that something was off. This was a chain company that specialized in making money by selling health products to the elderly in the form of gifts during lectures. There weren’t only outlets here; other cities had them too.
Each night, the outlets would do a sales roundup, sending out how many people they had scammed and how much money they had made that day. But on the night of the fifth day, the Linville outlet didn’t report its earnings.
The folks at headquarters found it strange and called the person in charge here, the manager who had recruited Kiara. When they called, all they could hear from the other end were sobs. The person wouldn’t say how much money had been made, only that they shouldn’t have cheated the elderly, and then hung up.
The people at headquarters were totally baffled, not understanding what had happened at all.
When they tried to call again, no one answered.
Realizing something was amiss, headquarters immediately sent people overnight to find out what had happened; they arrived early the next morning and were shocked.
Equally shocked was Kiara’s mother.
Kiara’s mum hadn’t attended the classes that week because Robert Johnson ’Father’ had dragged her out for a trip, conveniently missing the week Kiara and Arlong were undercover. The trip lifted her spirits so much that she put all thoughts of lectures and gifts out of her mind. When she returned and saw the promotional items she had previously received, she remembered them again.
Feeling the itch from not having attended for a week, she decided to check things out. Robert Johnson ’Father’ usually didn’t want to join, but for some reason, he was willing to go with her today.
On the way, Kiara’s mother pondered over the potential for her spouse to receive an extra gift too. The thought of getting a bargain made her feel like the world had broadened, and she practically skipped along.
But when she arrived, she sensed that something was off.
The people were the same, but why was the atmosphere so strange?
She saw the sales staff lined up on stage, each one with a solemn expression, and the uncles and aunties sitting below no longer had their usual cheerful demeanour but looked furious instead.
It was the manager who took the lead in bowing to everyone and then began a special lecture for that day.
It was still a slideshow, but the content was no longer the brainwashing material of before—all were product quality inspection reports, and with a choking voice, the manager spoke.
"I’m sorry, everyone, these test reports are the real ingredients of our products, and the so-called ’cure-all’ is nothing but a hoax..."
These words struck like a thunderbolt out of the blue!
Kiara’s mother sat there, her mind a blank, the phrase "hoaxing people" booming in her ears like thunder.
The elders below had listened to Kiara’s lectures over the past few days, and many had already guessed the truth, so they were not particularly surprised, just furious.
"Are you even human?! Scamming the elderly out of their retirement money!" someone shouted, leading the outcry.
The manager and his numerous sales generals fell to their knees in front of everyone.
"We’re not human at all! Money has blinded our eyes, and greed has corrupted our souls! We should not have targeted our evil hands at innocent elders, nor should we have taken advantage of your trust to do such a thing~"
"Now, we’re revealing the whole truth, not seeking your forgiveness, but hoping for a peaceful conscience so we can sleep soundly at night. These days, whenever we close our eyes, all we can think about are the innocent people whose lives have been destroyed by our deception. Sure, we could change cities and identities and still bamboozle another group, but while you can change cities, you can’t change the fundamental conscience of being human. We are not human~~"
This leading cry turned into something of a confession assembly.
After the manager confessed, the salespeople took their turn, and after them, the deceived elders came forward to share their own experiences with the scam, each word and sentence stark with reality.
Jenny Bailey stood below the stage, pregnant, as a journalist who would soon be interviewing onstage, while by her side stood Jojo, acting as the photographer. Jenny’s pregnancy was the result of a test-tube baby conceived in a special way after she and Jojo had a marriage certificate issued overseas.
Jojo, having dealt with hormonal imbalances for so long and finally managing to conceive with great difficulty, was ecstatic to learn from the check-up results that she was expecting twins. This was the best news for Jojo’s father, who was diagnosed with a terminal illness.
Jojo’s father wasn’t expected to live long, but when he heard the good news from his daughter – well, now son, since Jojo had changed her ID card and presented herself as a male – he pushed through hurdle after hurdle, and was now in decent health. The doctors even called it a miracle of life.
Though Jenny continued to work through her pregnancy, she was reassigned to manage behind the scenes at the City Radio Station. Normally, she wouldn’t need to cover such big news stories, but upon hearing from Jojo about the recent uproar caused by Mrs. Kiara, Jenny couldn’t stay put and insisted on going despite opposition.
If she didn’t report on this event herself, she felt it would be a betrayal of her journalist’s license. So, after pleading with Jojo, Jojo relented and brought her along. Concerned for Jenny’s safety, Jojo pushed aside the Radio Station’s photographer and took over the filming equipment himself.
Consequently, when the shockingly powerful program aired, professionals wept, questioning what on earth was filmed with such a shaky image. Yet, for laypeople unconcerned with technical quality, the shock of the program left them at a loss for words. Everyone was baffled as to why these once articulate salespeople, who could talk their way out of anything, would expose themselves like this.
Down below, Kiara’s mother was so astonished her jaw nearly dropped. She even pinched herself secretly – could this be a dream?
In the end, Arlong revealed himself in his true attire, and the law enforcement officers who accompanied him took away everyone involved. Only at that moment did they realize that the man claiming to be a Security Guard was actually an undercover agent.
Kiara had not shown her face throughout the entire event. She now sat at home, stripped of her false identity as a brainwashing instructor, sitting beside her dad on the sofa, sipping tea while watching the live TV broadcast.
"How did you manage it with those elders who attended the lectures?" Mr. Joel asked.
It was clear enough with the staff; it seemed that Kiara had manipulated them during their training. But Mr. Joel was still puzzled about the relatives.
Before completely brainwashing the staff, how had Kiara managed to indoctrinate these elders without anyone else noticing?
