Chapter 1457: Chapter 1429: The Cause and Effect Is Her
"Her? Who is that?" Kiara hadn’t asked Mario Yuno, as she had been waiting for him to bring it up himself.
But seeing the look on Mario Yuno’s face right now, Kiara felt that something wasn’t right. For someone as emotionally stable as Camden to be this serious, it must not be just anyone.
"An old acquaintance of Baron."
"What?!" Kiara was taken aback.
Baron, wasn’t he the man who had committed suicide while being pursued by Mario Yuno?
He had trained with Mario Yuno at some point and later retired to another place. For money, he had done many bad things, and eventually, during one operation where he was competing with Mario Yuno for resources, he took his own life out of despair.
Because of that incident, Mario Yuno had developed a stress disorder, and it took Kiara a lot of effort to cure him. The name Baron had since become a topic neither of them liked to bring up.
When Mario Yuno suddenly mentioned this name, which had been buried for a long time, Kiara blanked out for a moment, then it dawned on her.
"Could it be that the reason you might miss my competition is—you saw the person in the photo?"
Mario Yuno nodded, yes, it was her.
Before Baron’s death, he had left Mario Yuno a photo of a woman. Because Baron had spoken a phrase in his mother tongue that Mario Yuno didn’t understand as he lay dying, Mario Yuno and Kiara assumed that Baron wanted to revisit the good old days. They thought the photo was left for Mario Yuno to keep, so they didn’t pay much attention to it.
As for the woman in the photo, neither Kiara nor Mario Yuno had thought about looking for her. Since Baron wasn’t from the Celestial Empire, the woman in the photo clearly seemed like someone from his hometown. Separated by an entire nation, not knowing her name, it was like looking for a needle in the ocean. Besides, what could they do if they found her?
Tell her, "Your man was killed by me, say if you need any help"—wasn’t that asking for trouble?
Now that Mario Yuno suddenly mentioned the woman in Baron’s photo, Kiara slapped her forehead as she suddenly remembered.
"Right, right, right! Now I remember, is the woman you’re talking about the one who sells cold noodles?!"
Mario Yuno was surprised, "You’ve seen her?"
This meant Kiara had guessed correctly.
"That’s what I thought... Before I was worried I’d become face blind here, since everyone looked so similar. I remember on the day I arrived, I saw a woman selling noodles and felt she was very familiar. Now that you mention it, I remember, it was the woman from Baron’s photo!"
Kiara had a good memory, but compared to Mario Yuno, who had a naturally superior brain and had undergone special training, she fell a little short.
She had recognized the face as familiar that day, but she hadn’t made the connection. The person in the photo and the person in the flesh could be quite different. Add to that different clothing and such, without specialized training it was not easy to recall on the spot. But now Mario Yuno had mentioned it, Kiara had made the connection.
It was her!
"How did you happen upon her?"
"It’s quite a coincidence actually..."
Mario Yuno then recounted the event to Kiara.
It turned out that Mario Yuno was supposed to have breakfast with Zoel Cohen at the hotel, but he couldn’t stomach the western buffet, so he thought of buying some local snacks on the street.
When he got there, he saw the cold noodle stand. Such small noodle stalls were a local specialty and were commonly found everywhere, so it wasn’t unusual. A woman wearing the local traditional long robe was busy at the stand.
By chance, Mario Yuno felt she looked familiar and after spending some time thinking, he suddenly remembered—this woman was the one from the photo that Baron had given him!
This woman must be very important to Baron, either a sister or a lover.
She perhaps still doesn’t know that Baron has met his end in a foreign land, and the person who shot him dead is looking at her from just across the street.
Upon hearing Mario Yuno say this, Kiara felt a deep sense of unease, worried that this might reopen his old wounds, reminding him of that unavoidable past.
"Husband..." Kiara hesitated to speak up, and Mario Yuno shook his head.
"I’m alright."
With Kiara’s help, Mario Yuno had already overcome his post-war traumatic stress disorder. Although he felt momentary discomfort upon seeing that woman, he braved himself to face it.
The woman didn’t recognize Mario Yuno, treating him just like any other customer. Unable to communicate due to language barriers, Mario Yuno simply gestured, and the woman quickly started making noodle salad.
As she prepared the noodles, Mario Yuno pondered his next move. He gathered from the conversation between the woman and a stall owner nearby that she might be named Olivia Smith, as here people often have a given name but no surname, and Olivia Smith is a common name among the local women.
Judging from Olivia Smith’s attire and the status of her stall, Camden could easily deduce that her life was probably not going too well. The business seemed mediocre, but her smile was brilliant, as if the hardships had little effect on her spirit.
The photograph Baron entrusted to him before dying must have been very important to him. Seeing that the woman in the photo was not living well weighed heavily on Mario Yuno’s heart.
He had planned to slip a sum of money into the woman’s pocket when leaving, without anyone noticing, yet an incident occurred at this very moment.
The noodles were nearly ready when a little boy, about four or five years old, ran over and plunged into Olivia Smith’s arms. Several adults, armed with sticks and bricks, were following him. The sight of the little boy’s face nearly wrenched Mario Yuno’s heart.
Baron!
This had to be Baron’s child!
Olivia Smith hid the child behind her and turned to question the kids chasing him. The leader of the adults blabbered on, shaking a broken utensil in his hand. It seemed the little boy had gotten into trouble and damaged someone’s property. Locals here were quite savage and chased after him to beat the child.
The kid bore such a striking resemblance to Baron, almost like a mini version of him, that Mario Yuno couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. He intended to settle the matter privately, even taking out money. However, the adults were unrelenting, took the money from Mario Yuno, and still kicked the child.
The kick sent the child sprawling onto the stall, unable to get up, which infuriated Mario Yuno.
A violent confrontation ensued. Although they outnumbered him and were armed with sticks, they ultimately stood no chance against Mario Yuno, a man of extraordinary abilities, and fled in disarray.
The bloodstains on him were left by those injured assailants.
Kiara began to understand upon hearing this.
"So, that’s why you asked the Eldest Brother to find a translator for you to go to the Hospital, to treat the little boy’s wounds?"
Mario Yuno shook his head heavily.
"Not exactly. Although the child was a bit shocked, he just had some superficial injuries. It was his mother who was the real concern; I took his mother to the Hospital."
"What? Did those people hit her?"
"They didn’t. She spat out blood and fainted after seeing me fight and her child getting hit. So I hurriedly took her to the Hospital."
"Spitting blood...?!" Kiara caught a sudden ominous premonition upon hearing this—could it be—
Mario Yuno nodded, "Yes, she’s terminally ill, late-stage liver cancer."
