Chapter 70 - 70 70 The Thing Behind the Door
70: Chapter 70: The Thing Behind the Door 70: Chapter 70: The Thing Behind the Door “Laugh it up!
Damn it, you all were just as doubtful about him just a moment ago!”
Yani’s face turned red with embarrassment as he loudly complained.
Seemingly by unspoken agreement, everyone shifted their gaze away, leaving him alone like a fool.
While everyone was chatting, Anvis’s spellcasting was complete.
A transparent ray shot from his hands, hitting precisely the magic node hidden within the trap.
The air in front of the corridor rippled like water, with transparent dreamlike ripples echoing in midair.
But as the ray continued, the ripples gradually began to weaken and eventually settled back into calm.
After disarming the trap, Anvis slowly walked up to the firmly shut doors of the library.
The heavy, bronze-colored doors were festooned with bizarre and twisted black lines.
In the center of the doors, there was a line of brief inscriptions in ancient Gumanic deeply engraved upon them.
Based on the handwriting, it seemed as if the writer had achieved all of this purely with their fingers.
“In the face of mystery, one must not lose their reverence—”
Something seems off…
Anvis’s deep blue eyes reflected the inscriptions on the door, and he did not immediately push open the doors, but instead paused for a moment.
In his perception, some indistinct presence lurked behind the door, giving him a faint sense of oppression in his spirit.
A new trap?
Or some sort of guardian?
Or perhaps, just a bluff?
.….….
“He’s gotten through the trap!”
“Heh heh, the real show is about to begin; the library’s test is not that simple!”
“What’s behind the door?”
“Who knows?
In the years I’ve been here at Pamir, there were twice where newcomers got past the library traps, but in the end, they chose not to push the doors open.”
In the room atop the tower, as they watched Anvis standing quietly in front of the door, many of the upperclassmen couldn’t help but hold their breath slightly.
With a mixture of surprise, curiosity, and a desire to make up for some past regrets, they awaited his choice.
.….….
“A multiple-choice question?
A test of wisdom, or perhaps courage?”
Gazing at the tightly sealed door before him, Anvis mused for a moment.
Although this was but a welcoming ceremony for the Mysterious and Relics Academy, the Great Library was likely beyond the reach of ordinary new students.
In other words, this was a challenge prepared for the strongest newcomers, akin to an “extra credit” question of slightly higher difficulty at the end of an exam.
Then…
With eyes as blue as the sky, Anvis glanced at the pigeon perching on his shoulder.
“My dear pigeon, could you please take a look and see what’s behind the door?”
Sorry, but before answering the question, I’d like to check the reference answers first.
“Coo?
Alright, coo—”
The pigeon nodded, flapping its wings and flying in front of the door before slowly inserting its head through it.
Perhaps because the door was quite thick, the pigeon continued to push further in until the upper half of its body disappeared completely between the two doors.
Seconds later, the pigeon retracted its head and returned to Anvis’s shoulder.
“Coo, there’s a strange black mass inside coo, roughly larger than this door!”
“Very well, thank you for your help, pigeon.”
Anvis smiled while petting the pigeon’s head, and then fell into deep thought.
A black mass larger than the library’s door?
Aberrant Abomination?
Dark Matter?
Dream Abnormality?
Or some even more ancient and bizarre existence?
In a flash, Anvis thought of several powerful entities that appeared as dark black masses.
Then, with a somewhat self-deprecating smile, he realized that after all, this was just a ceremony for welcoming new students, and the academy wouldn’t possibly create such things.
If it’s under the premise that there’s no danger to the new students…
With speculation in mind, Anvis took a deep breath, raised his hand to the ice-cold gate with intricate patterns, and suddenly exerted force with both hands.
.….….
“He pushed it open!”
“What’s behind the door?”
“Gurgle—”
As the gate slowly opened, everyone’s attention peaked, and some couldn’t help swallowing nervously.
“Look quickly!
What is that?!”
“Seems like a big black mass?”
“It’s wriggling!”
“Why isn’t that new student running?
Is he too scared to move?”
As the gate opened wide, the people secretly observing from the top of the tower through the Crystal Ball also saw the eerie entity behind the door.
For most students, it was their first time seeing such a strange being, and they couldn’t help but discuss it with astonishment.
However, Anvis, standing at the door, wasn’t as scared as everyone imagined, but instead, he confirmed his previous speculation.
Lower Level Nightmare, a common monster in the Dream World with no fixed form, appears as the most feared entity in the Professionals’ hearts, feeds on the fear of the Professionals, and all attacks are illusions.
It naturally emits a low-level fear field, which can be mitigated by Mind Protection Magic, immune to pure physical attacks.
Weaknesses are Holy Light, Radiance, and illusion dream Attribute Magic.
Recommended challenge Rank: Second Rank.
“That is a Nightmare because we are observing through projection, we can see its original form.”
Finally, a girl with pale green wavy hair, at the Third Rank of strength, spoke up to explain the characteristics of the Nightmare to everyone.
“Now, it’s time to test the knowledge of this new student.
If he knows the characteristics of the Nightmare, then it will not be difficult to deal with, but if not…”
In the end, the girl couldn’t help shaking her head.
It’s very difficult to quickly identify a Nightmare, as it ignores physical attacks and has high resistance to most Magic Attacks.
If one is struck by it without investigation, one would fall into an endless nightmare, which is extremely tricky to handle.
But conversely, if one can quickly identify its true Identity, then dealing with it becomes much simpler.
.….….
In the Great Library, Anvis, who was looking at the same Nightmare mass as the people at the top of the tower, silently smiled and cast a Second Rank Dream Magic Spell: [Nightmare Exorcism.]
This is a very basic Second Rank Spell, so basic that some slightly talented First Rank Spellcasters could also cast it with ease.
The prevalence is considered common, at least in Anvis’s eyes.
With a hazy burst of colorful Radiance, the pitch-black mass vanished instantly, driven back into the Dream World.
What Anvis currently feared the most, without a doubt, was that figure in Holy Light, which surpassed the Ninth Rank.
But such a mighty being is not something a mere Lower Level Nightmare could emulate.
And not to mention the pigeon, a creature such a Nightmare probably couldn’t even comprehend, let alone transform into something the pigeon would fear.
Against the combination of Anvis and the pigeon, the Nightmare stood no chance at all.
.….….
“Look, that new student won!”
“Instant Nightmare Extermination Technique!
His Spellcaster strength must be at least Second Rank!”
“It’s not just that.
The biggest challenge in combating a Nightmare is how to quickly identify its true Identity.”
“And he almost instantly discerned the true body of the Nightmare, this judgment and knowledge…
This new student is definitely not ordinary!”
At the same time, the people at the top of the tower stirred once again.
Having witnessed this scene, no one was treating Anvis as a mere new student anymore, but instead as a peer.
In the hearts of many, thoughts of forming an alliance had already begun.
