"I’ll take a set of these in this size."
"This set seems pretty nice too."
With nearly ten thousand pieces of clothes, there were loads of people picking out garments. Tang Yue and her uncle Tang Mingli didn’t stop for a moment.
"Did you just arrive today?"
A person in a uniform came over and noticed Tang Mingli’s truck parked by a fence, with others setting up shop beside it.
"Comrade, we are just setting up here for one day." Tang Mingli stepped forward with a smile, handing out Dahongmen cigarettes that he had brought on purpose.
Tang Mingli handed out cigarettes to each of them, politely inquiring if it was possible to rent the spot just for the day.
The uniformed individuals were easy to talk to and agreed to a one-day temporary rental. However, due to the large space the truck occupied, they indicated the price would be higher than usual for one day.
Tang Mingli nodded with a smile. Even though it was a bit expensive having to pay for two stalls’ worth, it was still better than having no place to set up at all.
This was just a small hiccup. From their arrival in the Provincial City until past three in the afternoon, the truck loaded with nearly ten thousand pieces of clothes was now completely sold out, not a single piece left.
"I’m exhausted." Tang Yue plopped down, devoid of any ladylike demeanor. She had purposefully worn a pair of jeans today, sitting on a pile of packaging bags, her whole body having been soaked in sweat multiple times throughout the scorching day. Although they found some shade under a big tree, the heat was still stifling.
"Xiao Yue, you worked hard. Let’s head back first. I’ll treat you to a nice meal tonight." Tang Mingli was tired too, but the bulging wallet filled with money made him feel that all the hardship was worth it.
"Aren’t you going to see Sister Jiajia?" Tang Yue sat in the truck, leaning back into the soft seat, not wanting to move an inch.
"Not today, we can visit her another time," said Tang Mingli as he jogged to buy three ice pops. The uncle and niece each enjoyed one, and even the driver wasn’t left out.
"Brother Wang, thanks for all your help today." Tang Mingli handed the fare to the driver, topping it up with some extra money. The driver had been busy helping them pack and move goods during the sale.
"Is this too much?" The driver, Brother Wang, looked at the extra money which was more than what he would earn from a day of bricklaying.
"Not at all, you deserve it for all your hard work on such a hot day. And you’ve been such a great help," Tang Mingli said genially. This was their first time working with Brother Wang, and they might need this kind of truck more often in the future as their clothing business grows, so a good relationship now paved the way for future cooperation.
Compared to when they left, Tang Mingli’s mood on the ride back was soaring. His face was lit up with excitement, showing not a trace of fatigue.
Tang Mingli sat in the front passenger seat while Tang Yue curled up in the back row, sprawled out from exhaustion. They had risen early in the morning and after a long day, she slept all the way to Wangjiang County, only waking up when Tang Mingli called her to get off, realizing they had reached the county.
"Xiao Yue, we’re here." Tang Mingli gently nudged Tang Yue.
Groggy, Tang Yue opened her eyes to see the familiar apparel factory. She hopped off the truck; although the sun hadn’t set, the factory workers had already finished their shifts.
"Xiao Yue, you’re back? Did you sell all the clothes?" Deng Lanhua had just finished organizing the fabric in the warehouse and saw Tang Yue and Tang Mingli returning, their hands empty. She had an inkling of what might have happened but found it hard to believe.
If it had been a thousand pieces, Deng Lanhua wouldn’t have hesitated to believe they were all sold, but nearly ten thousand? She had witnessed the loading herself, a truck crammed full of clothes left her wondering, could they really have sold them all?
"Sister Deng, we sold them all," Tang Yue said cheerfully, thinking back on it, felt that today’s hardships weren’t in vain.
Deng Lanhua looked at Tang Mingli in shock, afraid that Tang Yue was joking.
Tang Mingli nodded affirmatively: "Yes, we sold everything."
"That’s great," Deng Lanhua exclaimed, too excited for words.
"Let’s have dinner together tonight. We need to discuss the colors for the clothes in the factory. Each piece shouldn’t just have one color," Tang Yue said with a smile. She would be going back to school soon, so it seemed these tasks would mostly fall on Deng Lanhua’s shoulders.
Firstly, Deng Lanhua was quick-witted and reliable.
Secondly, she was cautious and meticulous. With her designs and guidance, Deng Lanhua was bound to do a great job.
"Sure," Deng Lanhua replied cheerfully, "I’ll go home now; Leilei is still there."
"Uncle, let’s hurry and see how much money we made today." Tang Yue pulled Tang Mingli into the office. Once inside with the door shut, Tang Yue’s excitement was hard to contain, a stark contrast to her earlier listlessness.
"I thought you weren’t in a rush," Tang Mingli remarked, placing the bulging denim bag on the table.
When they first made the office desk, they had joined two tables together, so there was plenty of space. The new factory left the desk quite bare. Tang Mingli moved the few items on it to one side, unzipped the denim bag and turned it upside down.
The colorful notes spilled out of the bag, fluttering down in a cascade.
"It’s raining money!"
Tang Yue’s face flushed with excitement. In her previous life, she had earned a fair amount and had taken stacks of pink Maos out of the bank, but none of those experiences were as impactful or thrilling as what was before her now.
"Xiao Yue, let’s sort the money first. Group the US$ 100 bills together, the US$ 50 together, and separate the US$ 20 and US$ 10 as well," Tang Mingli said, his face flushing with excitement.
"Okay." Tang Yue picked up the US$ 100 bills, not the red Mao bills from the future but those with the portraits of the four great figures. She counted them one by one.
In the office, Tang Yue and Tang Mingli were engrossed in counting the money.
Finally, when they finished counting, Tang Mingli was dumbfounded by the total.
They had sold the clothes at the factory price and made the sales right next to the wholesale market, so their prices were cheaper than those inside the market.
In comparison to market outsiders, they were slightly more expensive, just the right balance.
The clothes sold over a few days numbered just over nine thousand. For instance, during today’s sales, if someone bought a large quantity, they would get some clothes for free.
After the expenses for renting the stalls and Brother Wang’s transportation fees, they were left with roughly US$ 90,000.
US$ 90,000!
What a staggering amount!
In 1987, having tens of thousands of dollars was already quite impressive, let alone US$ 90,000.
"Xiao Yue, am I dreaming?" Tang Mingli couldn’t help but ask, "Pinch me."
