Chapter 148: Chapter 148: A Wasted Trip
"That’s strange, weren’t we supposed to go to Jiang City?"
"How did we end up running to some godforsaken village?"
Qin Huai’an had run for a kilometer when he began to feel that something was terribly wrong. However, since Brother Mo had given them instructions, he instinctively trusted them. Therefore, like a gust of wind, Qin Huai’an ran from one end of the village to the other, heading towards the village designated by Mo Siyu.
Along the way, over mountains and hills, Qin Huai’an kept his head down and headed towards that village, completely unaware that the village they had left had exploded into a frenzy shortly after his departure.
Mo Siyu took out ten yuan, hired ten people from the village, and began to spread the word in nearby villages that there would soon be a circus performance in the village.
As night fell, the news of the impending circus spread like wildfire to every corner of the village.
In 1987, unlike later years, there were not many entertainment options.
Not to mention a circus coming over, even if there was just a movie showing in the village, it is likely that villagers from miles around would come over early to watch.
Although there was no sign of the circus in the village and night had fallen, the news seemed highly suspicious. Yet, the way some people talked about it with such certainty made even the skeptics start gathering in the village.
Dressed in a patient’s gown, Mo Siyu sat in the car as if waiting for someone.
No matter how lively the village was, for Mo Si, it seemed to have nothing to do with him.
Time passed by, and people in the village started searching for any sign of the circus. One moment someone would say it was here, the next moment there. As the crowd in the village grew, the people closest to this village had already arrived. After looking around to no avail, they began to grumble and complain.
Half an hour later, a circus truck actually drove into the village. The grumblers instantly became excited, glad that they hadn’t left after all.
The circus truck parked in the most spacious clearing of the village. Though it was only one truck, the circus slogans and advertisements on it still thrilled them.
A four-wheeled vehicle wasn’t seen very often in the village, but it wasn’t that rare either. Even though it was just one truck from the circus, they thought it might be a small circus and didn’t care too much.
Before long, the truck stopped, the deafening music started, and the stage was set up. Even though the performance had not begun yet, more and more people gathered around the stage.
The small village was suddenly filled with music and bursting with life. It seemed to come alive in an instant.
"You’re not from this village, are you?" A man standing in front of the Santana car, looked at Mo Siyu in the patient’s gown and asked with confusion.
Mo Siyu looked up, his stern face suddenly appearing weak. He leaned against the chair, the usual coldness receded, and his dark eyes lost their usual sharpness. He spoke feebly, "I’m ill. My younger brother heard there was a circus here and brought me along, but who knew, he’s gone to watch the circus now."
Under the night sky, Mo Siyu deliberately weakened his presence. Coupled with the patient’s gown he was sitting in the car wearing, barely illuminated by the feeble moonlight, he looked like an abandoned child.
"Then why don’t you go watch the circus?" the man inquired further.
"Sigh."
Mo Siyu let out a long sigh with a hint of regret in his tone, banging on his leg and saying, "Look at this leg of mine, swollen like this, I can’t even walk properly, how am I supposed to go?"
"My brother said he would come back and tell me about the circus after watching it," Mo Siyu said, asking excitedly in return, "Why are you standing here not watching the circus? Hearing the music over there makes me wish my legs would heal so I could go watch too."
"I was curious why you were alone here, so I came over to ask," the man said, his gaze probing into the car as he asked, "Aren’t you afraid being here by yourself?"
"What’s there to be afraid of? Everyone in the village is simple folk. Even if I can’t see, being able to hear the sounds makes me happy," Mo Siyu said with an innocent tone, the patient’s gown adding to the impression of vulnerability.
"You’re really unfortunate," the man said, his eyes constantly straying in the direction of the circus performance, eager to watch it himself, and soon he disappeared into the night.
Mo Siyu’s eyes narrowed slightly, as the man disappeared into the village, quickly vanishing from sight. He leaned back in his chair, seemingly listening intently to the sounds of the circus.
Before long, a dark shadow fell in front of him.
"Who’s there?" Mo Siyu looked up at the man in black standing outside the car window, realizing who it was, he asked curiously, "Who are you?"
"I just bumped into Daniu; he said your leg isn’t well and you wanted to watch the circus. How about I help you over?" the man’s gentle voice sounded.
Mo Siyu shook his head, "I’m heavy, and it’s difficult to walk with my leg; might not be easy for you to help, right?"
"It’s no trouble; I live on the east side of the village. I always work on the mountain, so I’m quite strong," the man said, reaching to open the car door.
"That would be so kind of you; everyone says people from the village are so simple, now I can believe it," Mo Siyu exclaimed excitedly.
Suddenly, the man asked, "Aren’t you alone here? Isn’t your brother worried about you?"
"He’s not worried at all. There’s no danger in this village. Look, the car keys are even here," Mo Siyu stretched out his hand, pulled out the keys, and muttered to himself, "I should keep the keys with me, otherwise my brother will scold me if he can’t find them when he gets back."
"Yeah, our village is the safest," the man said, reaching out to help Mo Siyu, a glint of light passing through his eyes upon seeing the keys in Mo Siyu’s hand.
Right at the entrance of the village, which was deserted, a few large trees stood nearby. The road from the entrance to where the circus was located within the village was difficult to traverse, with houses on both sides. However, by now, everyone from those houses had gone to watch the circus.
Dressed in the patient’s gown, Mo Siyu was helped up by the man, apologizing, "I’m sorry to trouble you, but look at my leg, it’s like this. Maybe I shouldn’t go after all."
"No problem, I will help you," the man said, holding Mo Siyu’s arm cautiously. Seeing his leg wrapped in a cast, and feeling the firmness of his muscles, the man remarked, "You’re very fit, how did you get sick?"
