Chapter 291: Chapter 291: The Wolf Is Coming 2
Wan Chu’er entered the room to find the atmosphere extremely tense; everyone was staring at her with unfriendly expressions, and Aunt Jiang was glaring at her fiercely, looking as though she might pounce and tear her apart at any second.
Stepping in confidently, Wan Chu’er greeted everyone politely: "Hello, everyone."
Father Jiang then helped Old Sir Zhong into the room, leading him straight to the seat of honor alongside Mr. Jiang.
It was only then that Father Jiang looked up to survey the relatives gathered in the room, spotting faces filled with either cold indifference or outright hostility. His own face darkened with disapproval as he pressed down his anger and said:
"Today, I don’t want any disturbances from anyone. If any of you make trouble, don’t bother coming to me in the future. This is Xiao Chu’s maternal grandfather, Old Sir Zhong."
The earlier part of his speech was a bit harsh, but they outright ignored the introduction that followed. They didn’t recognize Old Sir Zhong and simply saw him as an ordinary old man, not paying much attention.
Second Uncle Jiang and Third Uncle Jiang were taken aback and hadn’t expected their elder brother to give so much importance to Wan Chu’er. Their expressions shifted slightly, and they became more cautious towards her.
Third Uncle Jiang even gestured covertly to his wife, signaling her not to rashly make herself cannon fodder.
Aunt Jiang knew her brother’s words were meant for her. Already angry, she now added a sense of grievance and discontent to her sullen gaze. She couldn’t help but ask: "Big brother, are you really treating your siblings like this for an outsider? Do you still acknowledge us? Do you still acknowledge our parents?"
Such emotional intelligence—Wan Chu’er almost wanted to applaud Aunt Jiang. But what was the point of saying that? It would only make Father Jiang dislike her even more.
It’s better not to say anything useless.
Father Jiang replied coldly, "Stop causing trouble, and there’ll be no problems." True to his military background, his temperament was firm, and his words were straightforward.
Then Father Jiang picked up his cane, stabbing it into the ground a few times before saying with authority, "So you’ve become capable, brother, and now you’re the one calling the shots in this house?"
Father Jiang felt his authority as the head of the family was being challenged by his eldest son, especially with the distinguished Old Sir Zhong sitting beside him now.
This was getting into the Jiang Family’s internal affairs, and Wan Chu’er didn’t want to listen any further, not wanting to embarrass Father Jiang and Mrs. Jiang, so she quickly raised her voice:
"About that, my visit today is to discuss the events of last night."
That succeeded in drawing everyone’s attention and stares towards her, with Aunt Jiang speaking out bitterly:
"Wan Chu’er, how can you be so malicious? Jiayi has been so good to you, yet you harmed her like this. Are you even human? How is Jiayi supposed to face others now? Feel your conscience, was what you did something a human would do?"
Wan Chu’er stood in the center of the living room, her back straight. She didn’t dodge or flinch beneath Aunt Jiang’s gaze, unaffected by her words. After Aunt Jiang finished speaking, Wan Chu’er even lifted her hand to touch her chest, then broke into a bright smile, replying:
"My conscience tells me that if I don’t do guilty deeds, I won’t fear ghosts knocking at my door; if I’m upright, I’m not afraid of my shadow slanting."
Aunt Jiang: "...I’m going to tear you apart!" She rushed toward Wan Chu’er, teeth bared and claws ready, but Mrs. Jiang and Second Aunt Jiang along with Third Aunt Jiang hastily held her back.
"Don’t be rash, don’t be rash, let’s listen to what she has to say..." Third Aunt Jiang advised, not believing Wan Chu’er could say anything too convincing.
Seeing herself provoke Aunt Jiang to such a state, Wan Chu’er felt a deep sense of accomplishment.
She continued to say, "Lin Jiayi was the one who brought me to last night’s gathering, she had invited me over the phone a week ago, but I declined. Because I believe as a university student, I should prioritize my studies, not indulge in eating, drinking, and merrymaking all the time."
The implication was that Lin Jiayi was the one who indulged in eating, drinking, and merrymaking all the time and then wanted to drag Wan Chu’er into it, disrupting her proper business.
Father Jiang’s face was stern, clearly unhappy.
Old Sir Zhong, sitting beside him, however, had a relaxed expression with a faint smile as he watched his granddaughter.
"You’re talking nonsense!" Aunt Jiang yelled.
Wan Chu’er just shrugged her shoulders, took out her cellphone, pressed a few buttons, and a recording began to play.
"Chuchu, I’ve booked a venue for a friend’s birthday party at Lanyu Bar next Saturday night, come with me, it’ll be fun," it was unmistakably Lin Jiayi’s voice, and everyone in the room recognized it.
Then Wan Chu’er’s calm voice rang out: "I don’t like to attend these kinds of gatherings, I plan to read and study on Saturday."
"Don’t just spend all your time cooped up in your room reading; you should go out and have fun more, meet more people, it’ll be good for you in the future," Lin Jiayi’s persuasive voice said.
The recording stopped as Wan Chu’er pressed the pause button.
She said, "This was from last Friday, the first time Lin Jiayi mentioned this to me on the phone, I refused, but she was persistent and called me two more times. I’m not good at rejecting people, so since Lin Jiayi was so enthusiastic, by the third phone call, I agreed, thinking maybe there was some spectacle at this party that I needed to see for myself."
As soon as she finished saying this, the expressions of everyone in the room changed slightly. It was Lin Jiayi who had actively invited Wan Chu’er to the party, not Wan Chu’er who was prepared to invite Lin Jiayi.
However, Aunt Jiang’s face was still fierce as she shouted, "Jiayi kindly took you to gain experience, but you framed her, why don’t you just die!"
The incident from last night was just too abhorrent, and her daughter’s life was now ruined. Her daughter was her only concern, and with her daughter’s ruin, it meant her own ruin, so Jiang Lirong harbored extreme hatred towards Wan Chu’er.
Wan Chu’er spoke unruffled, "Whether she truly took me to gain experience or set me up, we really must ask Lin Jiayi. Why isn’t Lin Jiayi here today?" She looked around as if searching for Lin Jiayi, then laughed briefly, "Seems like Lin Jiayi is too guilty to face people."
She had inadvertently struck another blow to Aunt Jiang’s heart, and Mrs. Jiang and the others could barely hold Aunt Jiang back.
Wan Chu’er continued, "Last night’s venue was found by Lin Jiayi, and the people there were Lin Jiayi’s friends. How could I frame her? I couldn’t refuse Lin Jiayi’s warm invitation and went, but once there, it was clear that the men and women were not decent folks. With so many people, there were those huddling and cuddling, kissing and groping, it was simply undermining the social mores."
As she said this, Wan Chu’er’s face showed a look of disgust, as if she was quite contemptuous of those people’s behavior.
"They even forced me to drink alcohol. When I said I didn’t want to, they ridiculed me in all sorts of ways. Lin Jiayi didn’t speak up for me, instead, she also pressured me to drink with the others. I really wanted to ask Lin Jiayi what she meant by this, but unfortunately, Lin Jiayi isn’t here today."
"After half an hour, I went out for some fresh air. When I came back, I saw that everyone in the private room had gone wild, everyone was hugging and embracing each other, even Lin Jiayi was in Zhu Er’s arms. I really didn’t like it, afraid of getting conjunctivitis, so I quietly left. As for what happened later, I don’t know."
"These are all the things I know about last night’s incident. I’m not sure which part you’re referring to when you say that I set up Lin Jiayi? And how you all happened to be there and then went to the police station, those things have nothing to do with me; I went home early."
Wan Chu’er finished her narrative in one breath, then adopted an attitude of detached indifference.
After listening to Wan Chu’er’s words, everyone in the Jiang Family was filled with doubts and uncertainties, unsure whether to believe her or not. If what she said was true, then Lin Jiayi had ill intentions.
