Chapter 290: Chapter 290: The Wolf Is Coming (Part 1)

Wan Chu’er didn’t wait for Jiang Xiaoxiao to say anything more and hung up the phone.

Once Jiang Xiaoxiao heard that Wan Chu’er was coming over, she began to panic. There was a group of people downstairs, each one brimming with anger, and seeing Wan Chu’er, they might just devour her.

It was simply suicidal for Wan Chu’er to come over at this time.

She quickly redialed Wan Chu’er’s number, but the call went straight to busy. She tried calling five or six times, but the line was always busy.

Jiang Xiaoxiao’s heart jumped with fear. She hurried downstairs and found an opportunity to quietly inform her mother.

Upon hearing this, Mrs. Jiang also became anxious. Just as Second Aunt Jiang called for her, she had to suppress her feelings and deal with Second Aunt Jiang’s matter first.

Finally finding a gap, she pulled Father Jiang aside in the corner, told him about Wan Chu’er’s impending arrival, and expressed her concern: "Xiao Chu is reckless. Shouldn’t we try to get the people at home out first, so they don’t see Xiao Chu?"

Father Jiang frowned, thought for a moment, and then calmly said, "Don’t worry. Since Xiao Chu wants to come over and clear things up, let her. It’s better to speak face-to-face. Rest assured, I’m here. Besides, that child Xiaochu isn’t someone who suffers losses easily."

Mrs. Jiang usually heeded her husband’s advice, and although she still felt uneasy, she didn’t say anything further.

After hanging up on Jiang Xiaoxiao, Wan Chu’er immediately called Xiao Bai. After speaking with Xiao Bai, she went downstairs to find the old master.

The old master was engrossed in his book.

"Grandpa, someone is seeking an explanation from your granddaughter. Are you interested in watching the commotion?" teased Wan Chu’er playfully.

Old Sir Zhong put down the book, glanced at her, and grunted, "Alright, then let’s see if you can give an explanation."

Wan Chu’er giggled and hugged Old Sir Zhong’s arm, shaking it.

Old Sir Zhong laughed and said, "You’re something."

"It’s because I have your support that I’m so confident," said Wan Chu’er candidly.

Wan Chu’er went upstairs into the study to retrieve an email, transferred the information to her phone, then called Mai Qiqi. After changing her clothes, she went downstairs to find Old Sir Zhong.

It seemed like Li Shan had gone out on business. Wan Chu’er drove with the old master towards the Jiang Family’s home.

On the way, she casually remarked, "Brother Lishan has been really busy lately, always out of sight."

Old Sir Zhong hummed in response.

Wan Chu’er continued, "Brother Lishan is already twenty-six this year. How come you haven’t urged him to find a girlfriend or something? Surely you don’t want to watch him remain single for life."

Old Sir Zhong grunted, "I’ve been single all my life."

Wan Chu’er: "...So, my mom popped out of a rock?"

Old Sir Zhong: "..." Then he firmly closed his mouth, refusing to speak any further.

After a while, Wan Chu’er glanced in the rearview mirror and saw the old man looking forlorn, lost in thought, and she began to regret speaking so rashly just now.

She cleared her throat and said, "Sorry."

At first, Old Sir Zhong didn’t hear, so Wan Chu’er repeated, "I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that just now."

This time, Old Sir Zhong heard her. He waved his hand, and after a long pause, he asked in a somewhat low voice, "Why don’t your grandmother and your mother come to find me? I had told your grandmother how to find me."

Wan Chu’er: "..."

Grandma and Mom are not the kind of women who can’t live without a man; they are both strong and independent. She didn’t know what Grandma thought, but she did know that Bai Zhixi refrained from mentioning the instigator because of the hardships Grandma endured.

The old patriarch had his own difficulties too; all she could do was sigh at the fickleness of fate.

Wan Chu’er took a deep breath and said indifferently, "If you have the chance in your next life, ask then."

Who knew that Old Sir Zhong would snort with laughter and, to her surprise, angrily retort, "If I have the chance, I’ll surely give your grandma a good beating."

Wan Chu’er: "..." What kind of thinking is that? Not only did he bully her, but he also wants to beat her up!

Soon the car arrived at the Jiang Family’s compound, and as they reached the gate, Wan Chu’er had intended to call Jiang Xiaoxiao to come out and welcome them. However, Old Sir Zhong pulled a small notebook from his breast pocket and flashed it before the eyes of the young soldier on guard.

The young soldier immediately straightened up and gave Old Sir Zhong a salute, "Greetings, officer!"

And just like that, the two of them smoothly passed through the checkpoint.

From a distance, they could see Jiang Lingling sitting on the stairs outside the Jiang Family home, consistently looking off into the distance. When she saw Wan Chu’er get out of the car, she immediately got up and ran back in.

"Wan Chu’er is here, Wan Chu’er is here!"

Her voice was really loud, and as Wan Chu’er helped Old Sir Zhong out of the car, she joked, "I thought it was a wolf that had come."

Old Sir Zhong glanced at her, "You don’t seem the least worried. Go inside and see what kind of scene awaits you."

They had only taken a few steps when several people came out, with Mrs. Jiang and Jiang Xiaoxiao in the lead, followed by Second Aunt Jiang and Jiang Lingling.

Mrs. Jiang was startled upon seeing Old Sir Zhong and then told her daughter, "Go call your father out, tell him Old Sir Zhong is here," then she went forward to greet him.

Jiang Xiaoxiao then turned and ran back in, and seconds later, Father Jiang came out hastily and eagerly.

Seeing how respectfully Father Jiang and Mrs. Jiang treated Old Sir Zhong, Second Aunt Jiang was puzzled and inquired of her niece Jiang Lingling, "Do you know who that old man is?"

Having seen Old Sir Zhong a few times before, Jiang Lingling replied, "He’s Wan Chu’er’s grandfather."

"Oh," Second Aunt Jiang thought Father Jiang and Mrs. Jiang were just showing respect because of the man’s advanced age.

After Father Jiang and Mrs. Jiang exchanged pleasantries with Wan Chu’er and her grandfather, Second Aunt Jiang stepped forward and said, "Xiao Chu, you sure are remarkable, silently bringing disaster upon us. Lingling’s mother and I encountered the police for the first time in such a manner. If you ever marry into the Jiang Family, who knows what kind of frights we’ll have to face. Today is perfect with your grandfather here, so in front of both families’ elders, you should clarify this matter well."

Old Sir Zhong remained expressionless while Wan Chu’er chuckled and said, "There’s no need to rush. As for what exactly happened, I do happen to know a little—let’s go inside and talk about it."

Second Aunt Jiang saw Wan Chu’er’s nonchalant attitude and assumed she was bluffing, snorting scornfully. She wanted to say ’keep pretending’, but noticing Father Jiang and Mrs. Jiang’s grave expressions, she said nothing more, reasoning that she would have plenty of people inside to confront her.

Father Jiang said sternly, "As for what exactly happened, I will conduct a thorough investigation, so there’s no need for you to cast insinuations here."

Second Aunt Jiang was even more embarrassed and, not wanting to argue with Father Jiang, turned her head and went back inside.

Father Jiang’s expression darkened even more, and he lowered his head to Old Sir Zhong, "I’m sorry for the spectacle. I know this isn’t Xiao Chu’s fault."

Old Sir Zhong waved his hand, "Let’s talk inside."

So a group of them headed inside, with Wan Chu’er leading the way at the front.

Jiang Lingling, standing off to the side, glared at Wan Chu’er the whole time, believing that her cousin had been set up by Wan Chu’er the night before, causing her to now lock herself at home and refuse to come out.
