Rebirth: Contract Husband Falls in Love with Me -
Chapter 78 - 39 Drunkenness_2
Chapter 78: Chapter 39 Drunkenness_2
Sang Wan listened intently and for a long while did not hear Shi Fengju take out the bedding from the cabinet to lay a sleeping mat on the floor. She couldn’t bear it anymore, and, lifting a corner of the mosquito net, she peeked outside to see that Shi Fengju had already fallen asleep on the table, deep in slumber. She felt both annoyed and amused, hurriedly wrapped herself in a robe, and tiptoed out of bed.
Taking into account that he was drunk and muddled, she decided not to hold it against him. But if she were to let him lie there all night, who knew whether he would wake up with sore arms and a stiff neck and throw a tantrum because of it? If that really happened, it would be an unprovoked disaster.
So, Sang Wan helped him make a sleeping mat on the floor, and then went over to gently shake him: "Young master! Young master!"
"Hm? Is it dawn already? Is it time to get up?" Shi Fengju raised his head groggily.
Sang Wan chuckled softly and whispered, "It’s not dawn yet! Lie down and sleep a bit more!" As she said this, she supported his arm to help him get up.
Shi Fengju stood up subconsciously with her help and staggeringly made his way toward the bed.
Sang Wan hesitated for a moment, thinking about conceding the bed to him for the night, but then thought, why should she? Wasn’t he deeply affectionate with his cousin? For their happy future, shouldn’t he bear some hardships without complaint? Why should she inconvenience herself for his sake?
"Not there, over here!" Having made up her mind, Sang Wan grabbed Shi Fengju and nodded toward the sleeping mat.
Shi Fengju, without further words, obediently gave an "Oh" and turned to lie down. Sang Wan covered him with the blanket and observed that his breathing was even and his eyes closed; he had already fallen asleep again.
Sang Wan couldn’t help but gaze at his face in detail. With his fine brows, well-defined eyes, high nose bridge, clearly delineated facial features, and gentle lines, even in sleep he exuded an unusual handsomeness; with such a temperament, how could one not be moved by affection?
Sang Wan sighed silently to herself. This man was her husband in her past life, as he is in this life, yet in the past life he had never treated her as his wife, and in this life, they were still not truly husband and wife!
Perhaps because the hangover soup was very effective, the next morning Shi Fengju woke up on his own as usual without Sang Wan having to call him. Hearing the noise, Sang Wan also quickly got up and helped him fold and put away the bedding.
The atmosphere between the two was a bit awkward. Shi Fengju really wanted to pretend he didn’t know what he had done while drunk, but that segment of memory was so clear that he couldn’t feign ignorance.
"Does Young Master still feel dizzy?" Just as Shi Fengju was racking his brain for an excuse to start a conversation, to his surprise, Sang Wan casually smiled and asked first.
"It’s alright, I’m already better!" Shi Fengju’s heart lightened, and he hurriedly replied with a smile.
"That’s good." Sang Wan also nodded with a smile, secretly relieved, and then the two of them left together. As usual, it was the husband leading, with Sang Wan perfectly playing the role of the dutiful wife, serving her husband.
Although both tried their best to act as normal, that subtle, indescribable element uncontrollably circulated in the air, and the maids sensed it, too, serving with more cautiousness and care than usual.
After breakfast, Shi Fengju went out to take care of business, and Gu Fangzi arrived with a smile, bringing Lan Xiang with her.
Sang Wan smiled and ushered her in, ordering someone to arrange seating and serve tea.
After exchanging pleasantries, Gu Fangzi signalled Lan Xiang to open a brocade box the size of a palm and offer it up. Inside was a pair of carved gold bracelets. She smiled at Sang Wan and said, "Just a little something for Liu Ya as a congratulatory gift. It’s not worth much. Big cousin sister-in-law and Miss Liu Ya, please don’t laugh at me!"
"On behalf of Liu Ya, I thank cousin sister! You shouldn’t have gone to such expense!" Sang Wan hurriedly smiled and gestured for Liu Ya to accept it, and then she ordered Liu Ya to kneel and thank Gu Fangzi.
As instructed, Liu Ya stepped forward to express her gratitude, thanking the young miss cousin.
Gu Fangzi quickly leaned down to help her up, saying with a smile, "No need for such formalities! If you continue like this, I’ll start to feel embarrassed! Now that you are Mrs. Li’s adopted daughter and the young master’s maid and concubine, it wouldn’t matter even if you don’t perform such formalities! Congratulations, from now on, having Mrs. Li make decisions on your behalf is indeed your fortune!"
"Look at what cousin sister says!" Liu Ya, hearing the words "maid and concubine," felt an inexplicable sense of guilt and subconsciously lowered her eyes.
Gu Fangzi, misinterpreting Liu Ya’s reaction as a hit on the nail, silently sneered, her gaze slyly sliding past Sang Wan without changing her expression, she continued to smile at Liu Ya, "Oh, what’s there to be embarrassed about? What I’m saying is the absolute truth! The young master has always respected Mrs. Li, and since you’re under her wing, both the young master and big cousin sister-in-law will naturally treat you even better. Isn’t that a stroke of fortune? Big cousin sister-in-law, wouldn’t you agree?"
Liu Ya was still naively and foolishly feeling guilty, responding with a silly smile, but Sang Wan understood the hidden meaning behind Gu Fangzi’s words, which was nothing more than an attempt to sow discord between her and Liu Ya!
Sang Wan sighed inwardly, berating herself for suspecting others with petty thoughts, mistakenly thinking that everyone in the world was like her, clearly a foolish notion! She didn’t consider that even if Liu Ya was truly Shi Fengju’s maid and concubine, she was still Sang Wan’s own maid from her dowry. Compared to other maids, they were naturally closer. How could she be jealous of her because of this?
Even if she, Sang Wan, were to be undermined, could Liu Ya really become the lawful wife?
"What you said makes perfect sense!" Sang Wan also pretended not to understand and nodded with a smile.
Gu Fangzi thought to herself, keep pretending! Let’s see whether Mrs. Li favors you or Liu Ya. Sooner or later, that girl will stab you fiercely, and only then will you understand the gravity of the situation!
"Big cousin sister-in-law is truly wise!" Gu Fangzi’s eyebrows raised in a smile that was not quite a smile, exchanged a few more idle words, then rose to take her leave.
All the maids serving there suddenly had a moment of realization, no wonder there was something off in the atmosphere between the young master and the big lady this morning. It seems, the big lady was jealous last night and had a tiff with the young master.
Liu Ya, completely oblivious to being the suspect, excitedly said to Sang Wan, "Big lady, I want to set up a feast today to treat my mother and the sisters in the courtyard to a meal. Could you grant me half a day off so I can make the arrangements?"
Everyone who heard this couldn’t help but look at Liu Ya with sympathy, thinking: The big lady is feeling uncomfortable about this very issue, and here you are, gleefully bringing it up! It’s hard to see what Mrs. Li sees in you!
But that was exactly what Mrs. Li admired about her!
Being mindful when it’s necessary and blissfully ignorant when it’s not, she was as dull as a block of wood!
