Chapter 512: Chapter 124 My Dish_1
Qin Shou spread his hands and said, "If the potion is useful to you, once you drink this brew, tsk tsk... I guess you’ll spend your whole life tasting soups."
Mengpo continued to laugh.
Seeing that the atmosphere had lightened, Qin Shou asked, "Grandma, I have a question for you."
Mengpo responded cheerfully, "Ask away."
Qin Shou said, "You wouldn’t really taste the soup yourself, would you?"
Mengpo nodded.
Qin Shou asked further, "Aren’t you afraid that the soup will indeed work on you?"
Upon hearing this question, Mengpo fell silent... After a long silence, she murmured in an almost inaudible voice, "If it were effective, that would be wonderful..."
After she spoke, Mengpo’s face no longer bore a smile, but instead was filled with melancholy and longing, her gaze drifting to the distance as if she was sinking into some deep memory. Tears without her realizing dampened the front of her robes...
Qin Shou wanted to wipe her tears several times, but then he thought it improper for a single man to touch a single woman and, instead, handed her a handkerchief.
But Mengpo truly got lost in her memories, Qin Shou held out his hand for so long that his arm went numb, and Mengpo didn’t notice at all!
Qin Shou ruefully realized that he was now stuck between a rock and a hard place—whether to retract his hand or not.
If he pulled his hand back, what if Mengpo woke up then? Seeing him draw his hand back would be so awkward, wouldn’t it?
If he didn’t pull it back? His arm was really sore!
Just as Qin Shou was about to grit his teeth and pull back his hand, Mengpo suddenly lowered her head, looked at the handkerchief in Qin Shou’s hand with a surprised expression, then chuckled, took it over, and wiped the tear from the corner of her eye, saying, "Thank you."
Qin Shou immediately felt a sense of relief and started swinging his arm around like a windmill while saying, "It’s I who should thank you."
Mengpo, puzzled, asked, "Why thank me?"
Qin Shou cleared his throat and tried to change the subject, "Let’s not talk about that... what were you just thinking about?"
Mengpo said, "I was thinking about a memory that I want to forget but can’t. Rabbit, do you have such memories?"
Qin Shou looked up at the sky, flipping through the memories in his mind. Deep in his memory were Old Master Qin and his neighbors, then came Chang’e, and the bunch of foolish masters from the Heavenly Court. Each memory was filled with immense warmth and joy. Especially now, having parted ways with everyone, these memories seemed all the more precious... Hence, Qin Shou shook his head, "No... my memories are too precious; I wish I could remember each second clearly and remember them for a lifetime."
Mengpo said with envy, "I envy you..."
After speaking, Mengpo got up and said, "Let’s go downstairs and sit. The new batch of soup should be ready soon."
Qin Shou nodded his head and followed Mengpo downstairs.
The underground was not what Qin Shou had imagined; it was not the dirty, chaotic, and poor environment where European wizards, as portrayed in Earth’s movies, lived. On the contrary, after going downstairs, Qin Shou discovered a whole new world—a huge cave with a small bridge over flowing water and a small manor that was not too big.
In the manor, an old hen was leading a brood of chicks as they dug around looking for food, while a big yellow dog lay on the ground with its tongue out, panting heavily;
The yard was planted with vegetables like radishes and cabbages, and butterflies flitted about;
At the very top of the cave hung an enormous Luminous Pearl, lighting up the entire space as if it were broad daylight!
The entire small manor was meticulously arranged, as if every flower and every blade of grass was deliberately placed there by design.
What amused and baffled Qin Shou most was the sight of an enormous flower hanging limp on the roof of the house, leaving one to wonder if it had died or if it was naturally that droopy.
But on the whole, every plant here exuded a spirit completely out of sync with Mengpo’s; this place was youth and vitality, while Mengpo herself gave off an utterly lifeless vibe.
Qin Shou wondered if this place really belonged to Mengpo or if Mengpo had killed the original mistress of the house and taken it over?
Of course, the latter speculation seemed unlikely since Mengpo had lived here for far too many years...
For Qin Shou, this was his first taste of daylight since descending to the Netherworld, and his first experience of the flavors of the mortal realm, which instantly struck a familiar, thrilling chord in him.
Mengpo walked ahead, saying as she went, "My humble abode is simple, Daynight Wandering God, please don’t hold it against me."
Qin Shou responded with a wry smile, "If this is what you call simple, then the places Wei Zheng and Zhong Kui live in must be dog kennels. This place is far better; it’s relaxed..."
Spreading his arms wide, Qin Shou wore a look of comfort as he casually pulled over a chair and lay down in the yard to bask in the light of the Luminous Pearl.
Seeing this, Mengpo couldn’t help but smile slightly. With a wave of her hand, a large pot flew out from one of the rooms. The big iron pot was bubbling, and at the same time, a rich fragrance wafted over. Qin Shou leapt up after one sniff and exclaimed, "Spicy soup! With extra seasoning! So pungent!"
Mengpo laughed and said, "I’ve tried adding a few more ingredients. The memory-erasing property is somewhat enhanced."
"Only a little enhanced?" Qin Shou said, a bit disdainful.
Mengpo glared at Qin Shou and retorted, "What do you think this is? I’ve been perfecting Mengpo’s Soup for millions of years. The formula has been continuously strengthened. It’s already at the pinnacle! Advancing it further has become extremely difficult. Enhancing it even slightly is no small feat."
Realizing he had misspoken, Qin Shou hastily apologized.
Mengpo gave Qin Shou another cold look before pointing at the pot and saying, "You still dare to drink..."
Before Mengpo could finish her sentence, she saw the damn rabbit promptly take a spoon, scoop up some soup, and drink it directly.
Mengpo was at a loss for words at this sight. Actually, she had brought Qin Shou here with the idea of having the rabbit help with experiments. But before she could even propose it, the rabbit had started drinking on its own, leaving her unsure whether to admire its insight or criticize its lack of manners for drinking without permission...
At that moment, Qin Shou squinted his eyes, wearing an utterly blissful expression.
Seeing this look, Mengpo sighed. She knew the soup had likely had no effect on this damn rabbit; otherwise, it would have a blank expression, not one of enjoyment.
Mengpo asked, "Rabbit, what do you think is lacking in my soup?"
Qin Shou smacked his lips and responded, "It’s a bit salty, but I like strong flavors. Overall, it’s to my taste!"
Mengpo snatched the spoon away and gave Qin Shou a wallop on the head with it, sparks flying, and said indignantly, "I told you to test the efficacy of the soup, not its taste!"
Looking aggrieved, Qin Shou spread his hands and replied, "Granny, that’s... You’re asking the blind for directions here. I’m a foodie, not a medicine jar."
