"Yaoji, what’s the background of this monkey?" Qin Shou asked.
Yaoji immediately leaned in and said, "Your Majesty, this is one of the Four Great Demon Kings of Huaguo Mountain, the Tongbi Monkey, Batong. This monkey is quite formidable, and no demon around dares to provoke him. You see, we..."
Upon hearing this, Qin Shou suddenly snapped to attention, realizing it was a Tongbi Monkey—no wonder it was so fierce!
Qin Shou remembered that in "Journey to the West," Sun Wukong had four generals under him, including two Red-Butt Horse Monkeys, Generals Maliu and Er Yuan, and two Tongbi Monkeys, Generals Bao and Batong.
The original text didn’t describe the two monkeys in detail, but to be among Sun Wukong’s four great generals, they naturally possessed considerable strength.
Besides, when the real and fake Monkey Kings were being distinguished, Tathagata once pointed to the Six-Eared Macaque and said:
"Within the Zhou Dynasty there exist five immortals, representing Heaven, Earth, man, spirit, and ghost; five types of creatures, including mollusks, scaled, furry, feathered, and insectoid. This creature belongs to neither Heaven, Earth, deity, man, nor ghost, nor is it a mollusk, scaled, furry, feathered, or insectoid creature. And there are four monkeys that confound the world, not fitting into any of these ten categories." Within the Zhou Dynasty there exist five immortals, representing Heaven, Earth, man, spirit, and ghost; five types of creatures, including mollusks, scaled, furry, feathered, and insectoid. This creature belongs to neither Heaven, Earth, deity, man, nor ghost, nor is it a mollusk, scaled, furry, feathered, or insectoid creature. And there are four monkeys that confound the world, not fitting into any of these ten categories. The first is the Intelligent Stone Monkey, expert in transformation, knowledgeable of heavenly timing, understanding of the Earth’s benefits, capable of moving stars and fighting constellations. The second is the Red-Butt Horse Monkey, versed in yin and yang, experienced in human affairs, skilled in coming and going, adept at avoiding death and prolonging life. The third is the Tongbi Monkey, capable of grabbing the sun and the moon, shrinking thousands of mountains, discerning fortunes and disasters, and teasing Heaven and Earth. The fourth is the Six-Eared Macaque, good at listening, able to discern reason, knowing the past and the future, clear about all things. These four monkeys do not belong to any of the ten categories, nor do they fit within either of the two realms."
It can be seen that the Red-Butt Horse Monkey and the Tongbi Monkey are ranked only below Sun Wukong’s Intelligent Stone Monkey and above the Six-Eared Macaque! And yet, the Six-Eared Macaque was able to fight Sun Wukong to a standstill; Sun Wukong had to seek Tathagata’s help to differentiate the true from the false.
This means that, although these four monkeys might have rankings amongst them, the gap in their potential and strength is not as big as one might imagine. It’s just that their fates differed and the gap in their cultivated magic was too vast, leading to significant differences in their combat prowess.
Overall, though, all four of these guys were born fierce.
What’s more, the Tongbi Monkey has an impressive and formidable ancestor in "Investiture of the Gods," Yuan Hong, who did not eat Immortal Pills or undergo any magical refinement. Still, with his ironclad flesh, even Erlang God could not match him. In the end, it was only with Nvwa’s Shanhe Community Map to fix Yuan Hong in place and Lu Ya’s Dragoimmortal Slashing Flying Knife to slay him, showing how ferocious his combat strength was.
Taking all this into account, Qin Shou broke out in a cold sweat. Sure enough, simply reading "Journey to the West" is deceiving indeed!
Everyone thinks there’s just one Sun Wukong on Huaguo Mountain, forgetting about the other four little bosses!
These thoughts flashed through his mind, and then Qin Shou chuckled, raised his voice and said, "The Big Horse Monkey in front, I am the newly appointed Heavenly God, the Daynight Wandering God! I, Rabbit Marshal, oversee everything under Heaven. Where can I not go? I walk through the Heavenly Court as if it were flat land; is your Huaguo Mountain even mightier?"
Qin Shou knew that talk alone was not enough, so he waved his hand, and the Daynight Token flew into the sky, emitting beams of divine light!
At the same time, Qin Shou revealed the Pegasus Dragon Carriage, with its striking Heavenly Court emblem.
With this setup released, not to mention the Big Horse Monkey on the other side, even the little monsters by Qin Shou’s side were dazzled, rubbing their eyes in disbelief and muttering, "Damn! I’ve accidentally pledged allegiance to the Heavenly Court! From now on, I am part of the Heavenly Court too! How awesome is that!"
A young cow dug out a battered helmet and put it on its head, baring its big yellow teeth with a heh heh laugh, "From now on, I, your lady, am also one of the heavenly soldiers and generals, let’s see who dares to mess with me!"
The other demons nodded along, feeling proud and elated in their hearts.
Yibing, leading the group, held the banner high, looking as if he wished all the demons in the world would surround them so he could go and catch them one by one, asking, "Have you ever worked in the Heavenly Court? It’s clear you haven’t! Your Grandpa Pig, I’m a man of the Heavenly Court!"
Yaoji and Big Four Joys also looked triumphant, regarding others with a different gaze, displaying an air of haughty pride.
The Big Horse Monkey clearly did not expect that his call would summon a Heavenly God!
The Big Horse Monkey frowned, about to speak, when a gentle voice came from the mountain, "Old Ba, come back. Since the Daynight Wandering God has arrived, let him take a look around. There’s nothing on our Huaguo Mountain that can’t be shown to others!"
"Yes, Big Brother!" The Big Horse Monkey glanced at Qin Shou, his eyes full of defiance. It was clear that the Monkey had a fierce temper; if the Big Brother in the mountain hadn’t told him to come back, he might just have started a fight.
Seeing this, Qin Shou breathed a sigh of relief. After all, the Daynight Wandering God wasn’t some mighty divine being, and he was indeed worried that the Monkey on the other side would ruin the small team he had so painstakingly assembled...
Fortunately, they seemed to have a healthy respect for the Heavenly Court and wisely left.
Qin Shou chuckled, "There indeed are sensible people here."
"The Heavenly God jests. Our Huaguo Mountain is not a place where any Tom, Dick, or Harry can enter. Those little monsters should stay outside." The gentle voice sounded again, and Qin Shou felt the day and night shifting around him. In the next moment, tens of thousands of little monsters vanished with a whoosh, reappearing far behind him on a small hill!
A group of demons stood there, dumbfounded, clearly also unsure how they had ended up there.
Qin Shou was astonished. Worthy of Huaguo Mountain, even without Sun Wukong, there were still formidable big shots in charge! At the very least, this display of teleportation was frightening enough.
So Qin Shou said, "If you show respect to this god, this god will give you face. Big Four Joys, stay outside with the others, and don’t wander off! I will be back soon!"
Having said that, Qin Shou spurred the Pegasus Dragon Carriage straight toward Huaguo Mountain!
Seeing this rabbit suddenly charge over, Batong frowned and said, "Big brother, are we just going to let this creature frolic on our mountain? Let me at him, I could grab his rabbit ears and stuff them under my butt for a cushion in no time!"
A monkey with long eyebrows and whiskers squatted nearby, leisurely peeling a peach, shaking his head and saying, "A single rabbit is nothing, but he represents the Heavenly Court. Now that the Heavenly Court is powerful, who would dare to provoke them? Some fools who didn’t listen and secretly gathered to rebel were wiped out on the very same day by Third Prince Nezha leading the troops."
"So we just watch this rabbit hop around our Huaguo Mountain?" Batong said, dissatisfied.
The long-eyebrowed monkey let out a chuckle and said, "Our Huaguo Mountain, apart from some fruits, what else is there to covet? Let him wander if he likes. Once bored, he will naturally leave."
Batong, having no choice, had to nod. It was then Batong said, "That rabbit is heading towards that stone!"
The long-eyebrowed monkey frowned and said, "Batong, go over there. As long as the rabbit doesn’t take the stone away, let him do as he pleases."
That was exactly what Batong was waiting to hear. With a few leaps, he was already thousands of miles away.
Qin Shou arrived near the colorful stone in his carriage, and a bunch of curious young monkeys also gathered around. Qin Shou glanced at these monkeys and was taken aback!
On his journey, he had crossed many mountain tops. Though they were populated with demons, the most abundant were the wild beasts of the jungle!
But here at Huaguo Mountain, these monkeys of all sizes that had gathered around all possessed awakened intelligence!
Their eyes shone with spirit, they whispered among themselves, and they looked at Qin Shou with intense curiosity, a touch of panic and fear, not daring to approach, yet unwilling to leave, and they watched from the surroundings.
Qin Shou laughed and opened the Black Demon Box, reaching inside.
The monkeys, thinking the rabbit was up to no good, scattered in fright.
Qin Shou was taken aback and said with a laugh, "You little monkeys, if I wanted to harm you, all I’d need is to report you and by tomorrow this place would be flattened. I have no intentions of hurting you, here, have some peaches!"
While speaking, Qin Shou took out a few peaches and threw them to the smallest monkey in the distance.
Just then, a large hand flew over from a distant mountaintop, grabbed all the peaches, and then retracted.
Seeing this, Batong crushed the peaches in his hand and sneered at Qin Shou, "Save your faux kindness. Watch what you’re here to watch, and once you’re done, scram!"
Qin Shou raised an eyebrow, surprised that his good intentions were misconstrued. He smacked his lips and said, "Foolish monkey, suit yourself!"
After that, Qin Shou turned back to look at the colorful stone.
