Chapter 73: Chapter 73 Wedding Countdown (2)_1

Seeing him snatch the soldiers’ duty to stand guard and escape from her, Ruby Bluen felt a tinge of bitterness in her heart. She silently stepped forward, took off the military coat she was wearing, and gently placed it on Marcel Horne’s shoulders.

Marcel Horne did not move, so she went ahead and fastened the first button of the coat to prevent it from falling to the ground. Then she took a deep look at Marcel Horne, who stood still like a statue, before turning away and quietly leaving.

As she turned to leave, a complex mix of emotions flickered through the cold blackness of Marcel Horne’s eyes.

When the sky is about to change, no one can predict it.

By the afternoon, the sun slowly and imperceptibly hid behind the clouds, and the not-so-dark cloud cover took over the sky of T City. Everyone failed to notice, assuming it was just sunny turning to overcast, especially since the autumnal season generally meant reduced rainfall. Unexpectedly, not long afterward, it began to rain. The downpour wasn’t heavy—just showers—but it was accompanied by strong winds. This brought a chill to many people still wearing short-sleeved shirts, reminding them that fall was ending and winter’s door was about to open.

Emerald Garden Building was situated on the right side of Betra Street in T City. It was a residential building constructed in the early nineties. After more than a decade, the original residents, who had become wealthy, moved out. The emptied building, however, did not lose its value; its owners rented it out to incoming migrant workers. In this developed metropolis, both land and rental prices were particularly expensive. For an old building like Emerald Garden Building, the monthly rent for a single suite was five hundred yuan. Including utilities, this amounted to at least six or seven hundred yuan per month. Compared to other areas, however, this was considered cheap. Consequently, it was popular with the working class, and the entire eighteen-story building was fully rented out.

Although Rachel Bailey had worked in the Finance Department at Cosmos Group for over three years and her salary was not low, she was naturally thrifty and always tried to save some money. Unlike her colleagues who lived in upscale housing, she rented a suite here at Emerald Garden Building. The original rent was five hundred yuan, but after much haggling, she ground the landlord down, and he eventually agreed to charge her only four hundred yuan in rent.

Having lost her job in defense of her best friend, she refused Julia Bluen’s offer of help and did not wish to become a pawn for major companies to use. So, these past few days she had been thinking about what kind of business she might start. That morning, she had even gone out to survey the market. After returning at noon and preparing a simple meal for herself, she took a short rest, only to wake up to find that it had started raining.

Her rental was located on the eighth floor of Emerald Garden Building, with a window directly overlooking the street.

Now, unable to go out in the rain, she stood bored by the window, watching the rainy scene outside.

The people on the street hurried by, all in different states. Some had been strolling on the streets when the rain suddenly began. Lacking rain gear, they rushed home or ducked into nearby shops for shelter. Others carried umbrellas but struggled against the strong wind. All were eager to reach their destinations quickly, a challenging ordeal in such weather.

The most comfortable and unimpeded were the wealthy driving their cars.

Rachel Bailey crossed her arms, looking down from her vantage point. If I just work a little harder, she mused, I’ll be able to drive my own small car on rainy days too.

Various models of cars whizzed by, splashing water from the puddles on the road. The spray often drenched pedestrians, but the cars sped on without a second thought from the drivers, leaving the soaked individuals to stop and curse at the departing vehicles.

A black sedan approached from afar. As Rachel Bailey watched, she had an odd hunch that this car would stop in front of Emerald Garden Building. And to her surprise, it really did come to a halt in front of the building.

Two men and a woman emerged from the car. The woman, dressed elegantly and appropriately, with her hair up in a bun, immediately looked like a successful person. She carried a significantly large bag and, after getting out of the car, walked toward Emerald Garden Building, disappearing from Rachel Bailey’s sight.

Moments later, there was a knock at Rachel Bailey’s rental door.

"Who is it?"

Still by the window, Rachel Bailey turned and called out.

I don’t have many friends here, Rachel considered. Julia Bluen is my best friend, and I have a few classmates, but they all have jobs. They wouldn’t be visiting at this time.

"Is Miss Rachel Bailey inside? I’m here to deliver a dress to you," came a woman’s voice from outside. It was moderate in tone, full of politeness, and very pleasant to the ear.

A dress delivery?

Rachel Bailey immediately moved from the window to the door, opening it just a crack to peek out, only to see the two men and one woman she had just watched from her window. The woman stood in the forefront. She wore a light grey coat over a white round-neck T-shirt, an intricate gold necklace sparkling around her neck, and matching round, golden earrings dangling from her earlobes. A golden ring with a diamond adorned her right index finger. The light grey coat was buttoned at the waist, accentuating her slender figure. Beneath it, she wore black skinny pants and black high heels; even her lace stockings were black. To Rachel Bailey, she looked regal and competent.

"What dress?" Rachel Bailey asked back.

"Are you Miss Rachel Bailey? I am Clara Martinez, a costume designer from Happiness Wedding Dress Studio in this city. Just now, Assistant Ruiz from Valence Group came to our studio to pick out a few dresses and instructed us to deliver them here to Miss Rachel Bailey," the woman explained gently.

Happiness Wedding Dress Studio was the photo studio in T City with the best service and the highest prices. Picking out wedding dresses and cars there could cost at least several hundred thousand yuan. Consequently, only the wealthy chose their bridal attire from there.

Valence Group? Rachel Bailey frowned slightly. She recalled Julia Bluen saying she would take care of her bridesmaid dress. But this delivery... it’s clearly from Glades Horne. Hmm, that ’prince’ is certainly very good to my friend Julia! Not only did he agree to let me be a bridesmaid, but he also personally arranged for my dress to be delivered!

At this thought, Rachel Bailey’s expression brightened, and she laughed heartily. "I am Rachel Bailey." With that, she fully opened her rental door to let the two men and woman inside.
