Chapter 72: Chapter 72 Wedding Countdown (1)_1
As he approached the stairway, he tossed back a cold comment, "A soldier is not some young master." His voice was low, and it was unclear whether Ruby Bluen could hear him.
Seeing how he was always so cold and indifferent toward her, Ruby Bluen let out a sigh of frustration.
Turning around, she positioned her hands on the railing just as Marcel Horne had done, silently gazing into the distance.
Her beautiful eyes held a stubbornness for love and a longing for her family.
Her straight and stunningly beautiful hair fluttered incessantly in the strong wind.
In truth, these past many days had been difficult for her too. She didn’t dare let herself be idle; the moment she stilled, she would think: How furious Glades Horne must have been after she fled the marriage! And how disappointed her own family must have been with her.
For so many years, she thought she would make do and live life by Glades Horne’s side. She dared not voice whom she truly wished to marry, but if she married Glades Horne, she was sure he would treat her well. Once this man truly fell in love, he would love deeply to the end of time, pampering his wife to the skies. Yet she could not forget Marcel Horne’s indifferent face.
After Marcel Horne left coldly, she thought for a long time and decided that marriage was for life. She couldn’t just marry Glades Horne like that; she had to pursue the happiness she truly desired. Therefore, she made a huge sacrifice, giving up the highly sought-after Glades Horne to flee her home in the middle of the night, embarking on the road to chase the happiness she sought after running away from her marriage.
She didn’t want to think about anything anymore. From the moment she took her first step in the escape, she knew she couldn’t look back.
She only had to keep moving forward, moving forward, never ceasing until she reached her goal—unless Marcel Horne married someone else.
Just the thought of Marcel Horne marrying someone else pierced Ruby Bluen’s heart like a thousand needles. She had fled her marriage; she truly loved Marcel Horne, but what about him? Even if she sensed he might have feelings for her too, could he overcome the chasm that was Glades Horne? If he couldn’t, and would rather marry someone else than be with her, all she could feel was heartbreak.
Panic mingled with heartache, causing Ruby Bluen to bite her lower lip tightly.
In military marriages, there was no divorce. If Marcel Horne married someone else, she would lose her chance forever. That’s why she must make him accept her before he forcefully sent her away, to eliminate any thoughts he might have of other people.
Having been here for several days, she had also heard that many leaders in the Tibet Military District looked favorably upon Marcel Horne. Regardless of their motives, they were eager to introduce women to him—female soldiers, female officers, female medics, and so on. She couldn’t allow anyone to exploit this opportunity, nor could she let Marcel Horne be with someone else just to push her away.
Ruby Bluen! Come on!
Standing on the rooftop, Ruby Bluen cheered herself on. Below, after Marcel Horne had descended the stairs and saw Andrew Carter preparing for his guard shift, he immediately called out to him.
"Company Commander, are there any instructions?" Andrew Carter stopped in his tracks, turned around, and stood at attention, looking at Marcel Horne.
Their military camp was stationed at the border, and every day two soldiers were assigned to stand guard at a junction with another country. The guard post was in an open, desolate area. In such weather, being assigned guard duty there was a grueling, especially cold, task.
Marcel Horne shoved the bowl he was holding into Andrew Carter’s arms. He then took the rifle from Andrew’s arm and said coldly, "Go wash this bowl for me. I’ll take your guard duty." Without waiting for Andrew Carter’s reaction, Marcel Horne walked out. The other soldier also assigned to guard duty quickly followed him out of the military camp.
"Company Commander..." Andrew Carter called out in astonishment, but Marcel Horne had already disappeared into the military camp with long strides.
Looking down at the bowl Marcel Horne had stuffed into his hands, Andrew Carter went to wash it, full of confusion.
All of this was witnessed by Ruby Bluen, standing on the top floor.
Marcel Horne had taken Andrew’s duty; wasn’t it just to avoid spending time with her?
Did he think he could avoid her just like that?
A look of determination flashed in Ruby Bluen’s eyes, and she turned and walked towards the staircase.
Back in Marcel Horne’s dormitory, she took down the thick military coat hanging on the wall—it was Marcel Horne’s, given to her because she couldn’t bear the cold here. Clothed in the thick coat, she hurried downstairs.
"Sister-in-law, where are you going? It’s very windy and cold outside," Andrew Carter called out quickly. He had just finished washing the bowl and was bringing it back for Marcel Horne when he saw Ruby Bluen, wearing Marcel Horne’s winter military coat, rushing outside.
"Andrew, where is the Company Commander going to stand guard? In which direction did he go? I need to chase after him now," Ruby Bluen asked anxiously as soon as she saw Andrew Carter.
Upon hearing her words, Andrew Carter quickly ran over. He planted himself in front of Ruby Bluen, blocking her way. "Sister-in-law, please don’t follow him," he said. "There aren’t any buildings around there; it’s empty and particularly cold. You’re from the south. Even staying inside is barely bearable for you, let alone going outside. If you follow and get frostbite, our Company Commander will be worried sick."
Although their Company Commander was stern and cold to Ruby Bluen, they could all see he had feelings for her. But why one was pursuing and the other avoiding, none of them could guess.
It was at this moment that Andrew Carter understood why Marcel Horne had taken over his guard duty—it was to avoid Ruby Bluen.
"I..." Ruby Bluen was at a loss for words.
"Sister-in-law, no more ’I’s’, please hurry back inside. If you get cold, our Company Commander is really going to be distressed," Andrew Carter’s tone shifted, becoming slightly teasing as he winked at Ruby Bluen.
Blushing, Ruby Bluen thought for thirty seconds and then said, "Alright, I’ll just deliver the military coat to Marcel and come straight back. I promise not to disturb him." With that, she bypassed Andrew Carter and ran outside.
"Sister-in-law..."
Andrew Carter chased after her for a few steps, then stopped.
Let Sister-in-law have a chance to warm up that ice block, our Company Commander.
Ruby Bluen did as she said.
After running out of the compound, she asked the duty soldier at the gate where Marcel Horne was standing guard. Following the direction the soldier indicated, she went in search of him. By the time she found Marcel Horne, he was standing at his post, hands on his rifle, back straight.
