Chapter 62: Chapter 62 Who Is He_1
"Captain," a police officer called out from the car.
Benjamin Robinson turned his head to glance at him and commanded in a deep voice, "You guys head back first."
"Alright then."
The police officer nodded, gave Rachel Bailey a quick once-over, and finding her appearance unremarkable, withdrew his gaze after a brief glance, rolled up the car window, and drove away.
Onlookers who had gathered from afar began to disperse slowly, though women frequently looked back at Benjamin. Admiration filled their eyes. They found Benjamin’s heroic actions earlier akin to those of an expert marksman, one who could decisively shoot with astonishing accuracy the moment the criminal was distracted by speaking. Moreover, Benjamin’s robust physique and handsome features, with his thick, expressive eyebrows, exuded righteousness. He was the epitome of a hero in the eyes of many women.
"If you have nothing else, I’ll be leaving," Benjamin said, his words precise and methodical as he turned his gaze back and scanned Rachel Bailey with his deep-set eyes.
Watching his ever-stern expression, Rachel Bailey couldn’t help but suspect he was incapable of smiling.
"Who said I’m fine? My whole body is still limp," Rachel complained, acting unreasonably, particularly annoyed with his tight, coffin face. "I don’t have the strength to walk. You’re responsible for taking me back. If it weren’t for you all, I wouldn’t have been scared stiff."
Benjamin didn’t reply. He simply raised his wrist to check his watch and looked around, as if intending to hail a taxi for Rachel.
A white Range Rover approached and stopped in front of Benjamin’s police car. The window rolled down, revealing Hansen Ruiz’s courteous, smiling face. He called out cheerfully, "Captain Benjamin."
A look of relief flashed in Benjamin’s eyes upon seeing Hansen Ruiz.
He reached out, took Rachel’s hand, and led her towards Ruiz.
Hansen Ruiz watched them with puzzlement.
The two weren’t particularly close, but they knew each other because of Glades Horne.
Benjamin, still holding Rachel’s hand, walked up to Hansen Ruiz’s car and tapped on the door. As Ruiz unlocked it, Benjamin promptly opened the door, shoved Rachel inside, and said coolly to Ruiz, "Ruiz, this woman—please give her a ride." With that, he closed the door, turned, and headed to his police cruiser, got in, and drove off.
"Hey, coffin face..." Rachel called out through the car window, but Benjamin’s car was already far away.
"Captain Benjamin, is this your sister-in-law?" Hansen Ruiz’s teasing laughter carried through the air. Although Benjamin’s car was distant, the sound still reached his ears.
Benjamin’s grip on the steering wheel tightened, his face growing even more stern.
"What sister-in-law? What are you babbling about?" Rachel turned to glare at Ruiz, anger in her eyes, disliking it when people randomly paired her with someone.
Ruiz was momentarily taken aback, then managed an awkward smile.
As he started the car, he asked, "Where do you want to go? I’ll take you. That guy’s very busy; you’d be better off taking a taxi than waiting for him to give you a ride." Ruiz hadn’t witnessed the earlier harrowing event and mistakenly assumed Rachel was Benjamin’s girlfriend. He was somewhat surprised, thinking Benjamin had unique taste—foregoing countless beauties for an ordinary-looking and seemingly ill-tempered woman. Ruiz had thought Rachel wanted Benjamin to accompany her somewhere, which led to his comment.
"Who is he?"
Rachel turned and glared at Ruiz, indignantly demanding an answer.
Startled by her question, Ruiz nearly collided with an oncoming vehicle.
He looked at Rachel incredulously and asked, "Aren’t you his girlfriend?"
"Who said that? I don’t even know his full name. Besides, I have no interest in a coffin face," Rachel huffed.
Although she considered herself plain, she too yearned for love, dreaming of a future with a kind man as her partner. A man like Benjamin, always stern-faced and prone to lecturing, would be abnormal in her eyes—simply because he couldn’t smile.
Ruiz raised an eyebrow and glanced at Rachel again. Gauging from her expression that she wasn’t lying, he chuckled. "I thought you had some hidden treasure on you." The implication was clear: how could a plain-looking woman like Rachel possibly capture the heart of the City’s Party Secretary’s son?
"What are you implying? Are you insulting me?" Rachel retorted, displeased.
Ruiz just smiled and didn’t answer.
This woman, she’s quite fierce, he thought.
Seeing Ruiz only smiling without replying, Rachel couldn’t help but ask again, "You still haven’t told me who that coffin face is."
"You’re not interested in him," Ruiz answered with a cool retort.
Rachel was frustrated. Did one really have to be interested to know someone’s name?
Truth be told, Benjamin’s swift actions earlier had impressed her, and she wanted to know his name.
"Must I be interested to know his name?"
"Yes."
"Fine, I’m very interested in you. May I ask your esteemed name, where you reside, and whether you’re married?" Rachel blurted out sarcastically, leaving Ruiz speechless. He then chuckled, finding her not only fierce but also quite amusing.
"Whoever marries you will never get any peace and quiet," Ruiz mumbled under his breath after laughing.
"Don’t you worry, the one who won’t get any peace and quiet definitely won’t be you," Rachel retorted, her sharp ears catching Ruiz’s muttering.
Ruiz shrugged and decided to stop talking.
Rachel pursed her lips as well.
The car became very quiet.
Rachel leaned back in her seat, gazing at the road ahead through the windshield.
"Where should I drop you off?" Ruiz asked with a warm smile after a moment.
"Drop me off on the busiest street, the one with the most foot traffic." Rachel hadn’t forgotten her plan to conduct market research.
Ruiz glanced at her again and remarked, "You really are quite strange."
He then turned the steering wheel, heading towards Central Street.
