Chapter 284: Chapter 285 - A brilliant idea

Kailun returned to his own body with a jolt, gasping quietly as he opened his eyes. His chest rose and fell slowly while his limbs felt like they’d turned into melted wax. He let out a long, trembling sigh and stared blankly at the ceiling above, dazed. A strange heaviness settled in his bones.

The longer he stayed out of his body, the worse this strange exhaustion seemed to get. It was like his soul got stretched too thin each time. Now, every nerve felt drained. His vision swam slightly as he sat up on the bed, gripping the edge tightly for balance. His hands trembled faintly, and even that simple act felt like lifting stone.

He exhaled again, slower this time, forcing his jelly-like legs to hold. With sluggish effort, he pushed himself up and walked unsteadily out of the room.

Just outside, Jai sat cross-legged on the carpet next to the sofa, brows furrowed in worry. His eyes darted towards the hallway the moment Kailun stepped out. The boy’s expression lit up in cautious relief as he jumped up and hurried over.

Kailun reached out and gripped Jai’s hand silently, gently tugging him back toward his room. The old man didn’t say much as they walked — just a vague grunt and a tired shuffle. But once they stepped inside, he softly shut the door and lowered himself onto the edge of the bed again.

"You must be worried about that guy..." Kailun mumbled, trying to keep his voice casual. His tone held a tired lilt, as if he were just making small talk.

Jai blinked. "Huh? Who—oh... you mean Shao?" His brows furrowed slightly.

But as Jai stood there, he felt Kailun’s fingers squeeze his hand twice in a rhythmic pattern.

Then again — pause — again.

Jai immediately recognized the system. Dots and dashes. Morse.

Kailun had taught him this language years ago for emergency communication. Back then, Jai had thought it was ridiculous, but now... it was suddenly useful.

His eyes flickered, pretending to follow the conversation while he felt out the pattern of dots and dashes tracing quickly into his palm.

Four suspects. Doctor Qui Yue. Zei. Lu Zhi. And Shao.

Jai’s eyes widened slightly, then narrowed. As Kailun continued the code, he kept his tone light and added, "People can surprise you... even the ones you think you know."

Jai pouted slightly, staring down at their joined hands. Once Kailun stopped tapping, Jai gently squeezed back, using the same subtle code to reply.

You’re being biased, Grandpa.

The corners of Kailun’s mouth twitched, just a little.

Jai’s fingers twitched again. Shao’s dumb, but he’s not a spy. Another pause. He can barely lie to me about food.

Kailun didn’t reply in code. He just gave a long exhale and said aloud, "Dumb people can be dangerous too."

Jai snorted quietly. "You’re just mad he keeps sticking to me."

Kailun didn’t deny it.

Instead, he closed his eyes again, just for a second. The headache was building behind his eyes. He didn’t want to believe one of them was the enemy... but the soldiers weren’t camping outside for fun. And someone had made sure they ended up in that house.

He had to stay vigilant — even if it meant doubting people his grandson trusted.

Jai paused, his thumb resting against Kailun’s wrist. They had shared everything they needed to through Morse code. The suspects. The soldiers. The spying. It was more than enough to raise serious alarms.

But now came the problem—how the hell was he supposed to tell Yunfeng?

Jai frowned deeply.

Yunfeng didn’t know Morse code. He barely remembered where he kept his own socks. Jai bit his lip and looked down at the floor, mind whirling for ideas. A note? Maybe... But even then, how was he going to pass it without being seen? The house was practically a glass box. And with the soldiers already watching their every move...

He huffed out a quiet breath. Right now, he had no idea how to get the message across.

But Yunfeng—on the other hand—had already started executing his plan.

In the dimly lit bedroom, Yunfeng lay back against the pillows, still pretending to be blind. His arms were loosely wrapped around Muchen, their bodies pressed close together beneath the sheets. The room was quiet except for their soft breathing.

Then suddenly, both of them rolled over in unison, Yunfeng landing beneath Muchen.

Muchen gave a faint chuckle, straddling his lover and placing his hands on either side of his chest. "I swear you like to play helpless," he whispered, loudly enough for the room bugs to pick up. His voice dripped with teasing mischief as he leaned down.

To anyone listening, it sounded like they were getting intimate. But Muchen’s hand slipped down toward the headboard—gripping the iron rail tightly.

Yunfeng didn’t move much, his lips close to Muchen’s ear. "Break it," he mouthed. The words were silent, but his lips formed them slowly, clearly.

Muchen gave a fake breathy laugh, tilting his head as if aroused. But in reality, his fingers tensed around the rod. With a practiced movement, he pulled upward sharply. The metal gave a soft creak—then snapped out of place with a pop.

He held it up triumphantly, grinning like a man in the middle of a flirtatious moment. "Oops," he murmured, waving the hollow iron rod at Yunfeng with a teasing smirk.

Then, pretending to toss it playfully aside, he sent it clattering directly into the nearby wall—hard.

The rod slammed through the plaster like a thrown spear, passing through into the adjacent room.

For a second, silence.

Then Muchen let out a dramatic laugh and collapsed onto Yunfeng, burying his face in his chest. Yunfeng huffed, playing along, running a hand lazily through Muchen’s hair.

"Sorry..." Muchen mumbled, giggling. "Guess I don’t know my own strength."

In a house down the street, inside a darkened living room behind a scope, three soldiers stared at the scene through their various surveillance tools.

One of them frowned, pulling away from the telescope and rubbing his jaw.

"...They actually do a lot of intimate things, huh?" he muttered, confused.

"Isn’t that guy blind?" another asked, brows furrowing.

The first one nodded. "Yeah, but... damn, I’d still make out with him. He’s hot."

"Not as hot as Muchen though," the third chimed in, letting out a low whistle.

The first one scoffed. "No way. Blind guy’s got that helpless vibe. I’d carry him around."

All three stared in silence for a moment longer.

"...Are we the bad guys?" one of them finally asked.

"Shut up," another said, adjusting the scope. "Keep watching. They might slip up."

Back inside the house, Muchen and Yunfeng exchanged a quick glance beneath the sheets. The hollow rod had successfully reached the other room. Now they just had to hope someone smart was in there.
