Chapter 283: Chapter 284 - Checking on everyone
Kailun’s spirit zipped through the air, gliding swiftly above rooftops and between trees. He moved with urgency now, each second filling him with a heavier sense of dread. The house they were staying in—it was surrounded.
Not just one house down.
Not just ten houses down.
Every house within earshot had soldiers stationed at windows, on porches, behind curtains. Some sat inside, rifles propped beside them. Others stood by with binoculars, watching the same direction—toward his family. Observing them all through the multiple windows.
It was like a net. A quiet, calculated trap.
And the realization hit him square in the chest.
This wasn’t coincidence. This wasn’t random.
This was planned. Everything was well planned.
He hovered higher above the street and turned, eyes scanning the perimeter again. The pattern was unmistakable. No soldier was guarding any other direction. The surveillance wasn’t general—it was concentrated.
Their house was the center of it all.
A perfect setup.
Someone had wanted them there.
His frown deepened as he drifted back toward the building. The memory played in his mind like a fogged mirror—those chaotic moments when Yunfeng had collapsed, bleeding and pale. They had all panicked, scrambling to find shelter. Someone had shouted about a house nearby. Someone had pointed. Led them there.
But who?
His astral form paused, floating just outside the window of the bedroom where his body lay.
Who guided us to this house?
He tried to recall—who was the first one to mention it? Who opened the door? Who insisted they move Yunfeng there and not keep running? Everything had been so fast, blood everywhere, hearts pounding, chaos loud in his ears.
His eyes narrowed sharply.
He couldn’t remember. And that was the problem.
Because now it was obvious—this house wasn’t just a random place they stumbled into.
It was chosen.
They were guided here.
Like prey being led into a trap.
His gaze flicked toward the others inside the house. Muchen... Jai... Yunfeng... Zei...
Could one of them...?
His chest tightened painfully at the thought.
No—he refused to believe it was one of his family. But someone. Someone either among them... or close enough to influence them... was feeding information.
There was a spy.
A traitor.
And he had to find out who before it was too late.
He drifted downward, closer to the walls, scanning the perimeter again. His mind raced, listing every interaction, every look, every word exchanged since they arrived.
’I need to figure out who it is...’
Kailun floated silently back toward the house, a growing tightness in his chest. His thoughts spun with suspicion and uncertainty. He needed to rule out the possibility, no matter how much he disliked it—he had to check on Shao.
Of all the people close to his grandson, Shao was the one he distrusted the most. That boy had always clung too close to Jai, always giving him those looks, speaking in ways that set Kailun’s teeth on edge. And now, with a spy among them, Kailun wasn’t going to let his personal dislike cloud his judgment. If Shao was the traitor, then so be it.
His astral form drifted into the small house Shao had been placed in. The walls were quiet, dim, and the scent of medicine still lingered in the air. Kailun passed through the door like mist, silent and cold, entering the central room.
There, between tangled blankets and an overturned cup of water, lay Shao.
His head was buried into the sheets, body curled slightly on his side. His breath came fast—too fast—and his brow was slick with sweat. His skin was flushed, and as he stirred beneath the covers, he mumbled something incoherent, his lips barely moving.
Kailun hovered closer, a skeptical frown pulling at his ethereal features. At first, he assumed Shao was faking it—some act to avoid suspicion. But as he examined the boy’s face, something changed in his expression.
Shao was unconscious.
His breathing was erratic, his fingers clutching tightly to the sheets as if in pain. Occasionally, he rubbed into the blanket, his body twitching slightly, as though his dreams were anything but peaceful.
Kailun grimaced and turned his face away.
"This is too personal for me to see..." he muttered to himself, eyes narrowing with discomfort.
With a quiet whoosh of air, his spirit left the house and returned to theirs.
One by one, he would check them all.
He drifted through the hallway, phasing quietly through the walls until he reached Hana and Yuki’s shared room. It was dim but warm. A small desk lamp lit one side of the room while the other lay in shadows. The air smelled faintly of lavender from the sachets Yuki always kept under her pillow.
Inside, Hana stood in front of a glass of water, hands dramatically raised.
"Boom! Come out, my stupid power!" she shouted in frustration, her stance exaggerated, legs planted wide like a cartoon hero. "I’m supposed to have powers too!"
Kailun blinked slowly, floating in the corner.
She huffed and changed poses again, stretching her arms out toward the glass. The water didn’t move. Not even a ripple.
"Guess I don’t have water power," she muttered with a pout. "Let’s tick that off."
With an exaggerated sigh, she picked up a notebook and made a loud "tick!" noise, pretending to cross something out.
Sitting on the bed nearby was little Yuki. The small girl beamed with pride as she clapped softly. "You go, Sister," she said in her sweet, high voice, swinging her legs over the edge of the bed as she watched Hana with unshaken admiration.
Kailun watched them both in silence. He’d known Hana since she was barely taller than a chair. She had her odd moments, sure, but she was loyal. And Yuki... she was too young, too innocent.
He lingered only a moment longer, his spirit calm. ’these kids are harmless...’
Kailun then moved on to the next room where Yunfeng and Muchen were hugging and laying down in the bed. He lingered there for a second and went to the other room. Qiu Yue was alone sitting in a chair scribbling something on a piece of [paper with a small frown.
He floated closer and peered over his shoulder.
What was written there made him cold all over.
"should test on Yunfeng."
He quickly checked, trying to read any other notes on the book, but this Qui Yue was already on a new page. The only thing written was that single line. Kailun narrowed his eyes. There was something about this doctor he didn’t like. But instead of jumping to conclusions, he added him mentally to his suspect list — underlined, but not circled yet.
Moving on, Kailun floated through the wall and entered the next room where Lu Zhi and Zei were staying. The moment he entered, a loud gagging sound echoed in the room.
Zei sat on the floor with his cheeks puffed out like a squirrel, his hands balancing a mountain of colorful candy wrappers.
"Let’s bet how many I can stuff in my mouth!" Zei said through a mouthful of sugary strips, his voice muffled and garbled.
Lu Zhi was perched on the edge of the bed, one brow raised with the tired look of someone who’d had to deal with this chaos more than once. "Fifteen."
"Fifteen?" Zei’s eyes widened like it was an insult to his honor. "That’s too low. Watch me do twenty!"
Before Kailun could blink, Zei crammed twenty long candy strips into his mouth. His cheeks ballooned comically, and his face turned red as he tried not to choke.
"Mmgh—see!" he gagged, then immediately spat the entire sticky mess into his palms. "Told ya! Twenty."
Lu Zhi leaned back and folded his arms. "You have to chew and swallow it for it to count, idiot."
Zei narrowed his eyes. "We didn’t agree on that. That’s a new rule you just made up." He pointed dramatically like he’d been cheated. "Now hand over the reward!"
"What reward?"
"That candy bar in your hand," Zei said, snatching it from Lu Zhi before he could even react.
Lu Zhi’s mouth dropped open in betrayal. "Hey! You’re bullying kids!"
"You’re barely a kid," Zei said while tearing into the candy bar like a victor enjoying his spoils.
"I’m in tenth grade! That still counts as a kid!"
"You look nothing like a kid," Zei muttered with his mouth full, waving him off like a pesky sibling.
Lu Zhi crossed his arms, pouting in genuine offense. "You’re just jealous ’cause I have nice skin and better hair."
"Debatable."
Kailun watched the whole exchange quietly, hiding a faint twitch in his eyebrow. These two didn’t seem suspicious... just incredibly loud and immature. Still, they were strangers. And after tonight’s discovery, even harmless goofballs could be wolves in disguise. He scribbled their names onto his mental list with a sigh: "Observe later. Suspect level: medium annoyance."
And with that, he floated out of the room, already feeling a headache building.
