Chapter 22: Chapter 21
His mind stirred, he suddenly asked the group, "Did anyone get a clear look at that Toyota’s license plate just now?"
"I didn’t."
"I didn’t either."
"We left in such a hurry just now, I really wasn’t paying attention. Why is Young Master Gao asking about this?"
The three exchanged glances, their faces filled with confusion as they looked towards Gao Junjie.
"We might have gotten ourselves into some trouble, think about it, would someone who drives a common Toyota dare to be so arrogant?"
Gao Junjie said calmly.
"What?"
"What do we do then?"
The tall thin man and the muscular man were startled by Gao Junjie’s words, their faces showing a trace of alarm.
"What can we do? We can only wait and see, we will block the soldiers and cover with earth when water comes. However, I expect a punishment from the family is inevitable, so be mentally prepared."
Gao Junjie glanced at the two men indifferently, then turned his gaze out the window. Regarding this matter, he wasn’t very anxious, as he was not just anybody. As long as it wasn’t someone extremely significant, they wouldn’t be able to do much to him.
"Damn it, it’s all that bumpkin’s fault. If it wasn’t because of him, how could I have failed to see the car ahead, how could I have hit that damn Toyota."
The short stocky man cursed bitterly.
While speaking, he forgot that if it hadn’t been for his own malicious intent to scare Xiao Yi, and his lack of courage to actually hit him, he would never have collided with the Toyota. Yet, he pushed all the blame onto Xiao Yi.
"Speaking of that bumpkin, where is he?"
The tall thin man, upon hearing the short stocky man mention it, then remembered, Xiao Yi should have been the main character in this incident.
"Don’t know, he probably slipped away already."
As the stocky man glanced around and checked the rear mirror without seeing any trace of Xiao Yi, the thought of dealing with a troublesome character due to him, yet he might be somewhere carefree, his resentment grew stronger and he gritted his teeth, "This bumpkin, we really need to teach him a lesson when we get the chance!"
This time, no one voiced any objection, and even in Gao Junjie’s eyes, a cold light flickered.
The incident that unfolded this afternoon made them feel incredibly humiliated. Since they had started out, they had never felt so suffocated. With no clear reason, they had been scared considerably, it felt like they were fleeing, and they might have even attracted some trouble. They were all harboring a great deal of anger in their hearts. They felt they couldn’t calm down without letting off some steam, and Xiao Yi, who obviously lacked any background and seemed insignificant, was undoubtedly a perfect target.
Upon returning to Azure Waterfront, Xiao Yi took a brief rest, had a drink of water, sat cross-legged on the bed, and commenced his exercises for the day.
He silently gathered his spirit and activated the Second Layer of the Carefree Heart Method. Xiao Yi quickly felt that extremely familiar sensation as the True Qi within his body slowly flowed out from his dantian, like a gentle spring. It then moved like slender streams, flowing through the meridians all over his body, circulating once throughout his body before slowly returning to his dantian.
Just as the True Qi was about to flow back into his dantian, Xiao Yi’s mind suddenly tensed, pausing briefly before he forcefully propelled the True Qi to rush towards his dantian, harboring a sliver of hope in his heart.
However, his expression quickly turned to disappointment.
The True Qi returned to the dantian just as it had every previous time, with no change whatsoever. It was as if it had entered a dead sea, not even stirring a ripple, let alone reaching the roiling state of True Qi inside the dantian as described in the Carefree True Scripture.
Xiao Yi soon realized that the True Qi he had cultivated this time had once again disappeared without a trace shortly after returning to the dantian, just like before, and the level of True Qi inside his dantian had quickly reverted to what it was before his cultivation.
He drew in his legs, shook his head helplessly, and stood up feeling incredibly frustrated. He picked up a towel lying beside him and wiped his face. What on earth was wrong with this Carefree True Scripture?
He now had a feeling, and this feeling had persisted for a long time, that his efforts were futile!
Ever since he had broken through from the First Layer to the Second Layer, he had been stuck in this situation. He practiced daily, and the True Qi he cultivated always seemed to vanish somewhere after returning to the dantian, as if there was a thief inside his dantian stealthily stealing the True Qi he cultivated.
He could clearly feel that his current level of True Qi was still the same as eight years ago when he had broken through to the First Layer.
Could it be that the Second Layer was just deceiving people?
For the first time, Xiao Yi began to doubt the Carefree True Scripture.
But if it was deceiving, why would the old man have let him practice it? With the old man’s knowledge, could the author of the Carefree Scripture have deceived him too? That seemed impossible. Even though the old man had not practiced it, he was very familiar with the terminology and principles of cultivation. Xiao Yi was always amazed at how much the old man knew about cultivation.
Could it be that with the Second Layer, he really needed to cultivate a powerful energy that could dramatically stir up his dantian for a breakthrough?
Perhaps, this was the only explanation that made sense.
Thinking of this possibility, Xiao Yi could not help but smile bitterly. How difficult this would be! He had been practicing daily for eight years, and although there was some increase in energy each time, the amount was minuscule. So far, he had gained less than ten percent more than before. To achieve a level of energy increase that could stimulate his dantian would require many times more energy; at this rate, it would take him decades.
Yet he also knew that he was already deep into it. Having adhered to the practice of the Carefree True Scripture for fifteen years, he really could not bring himself to give it up now. Besides, switching to another cultivation technique might be limited in scope, although there were many Heavenly Materials and Earthly Treasures at the old man’s disposal that could aid his practice. The old man had told him that relying heavily on Heavenly Materials and Earthly Treasures for cultivation, although seeming like a shortcut, actually posed huge hidden risks and would more or less affect the breakthroughs in later stages of cultivation.
Moreover, despite its inability to advance past a certain point, the Carefree True Scripture had its advantages compared to other techniques. For instance, after he broke through to the Second Layer, his progress in practicing External Kung Fu was much faster than it was for typical cultivators. The True Qi he had cultivated during the First Layer was also much more refined than that of other techniques. Another significant benefit, which even made the old man jealous, was the seemingly inherent healing effect of the Carefree True Qi. Other techniques also used True Qi to heal injuries, but typically via special methods that nurtured injuries with True Qi, consuming it in the process. The Carefree True Qi, however, needed no such techniques; simply circulating it as during normal practice would suffice to heal injuries where it passed, without any loss of True Qi.
Decades then, if that’s what it takes. He hoped the True Qi would prolong his life and not end before experiencing what the Third Layer was like, or else it would be utterly disappointing and terribly disheartening.
Xiao Yi shook his head, decided not to think further, and turned towards the adjacent bathroom.
Although by now, he was long past the detoxification phase within his body, the small amounts of toxins he expelled during daily practice were negligible. Not like when he had just started practicing, when every session left a foul smell in the air around him for a mile, and his body was covered with a black layer as if smeared with ink. But whenever possible, he still preferred to take a comfortable shower after his practice.
