Axiang stepped out of the room and saw that Shagen was no longer in the hall; he had already run to the kitchen to start a fire for cooking, so Axiang went to the kitchen as well.

Upon seeing Axiang, Shagen first paused, then broke into a smile. His clothes were too long, so the sleeves and pant legs were rolled up quite a bit, making it look like his limbs had rings on them.

Axiang immediately felt embarrassed and asked Shagen with a smile, "Look at how you’re laughing, it must look very ridiculous on me, right? Should I just not wear them?"

"No, Sister should wear them, Sister looks good," Shagen quickly came over to support Axiang’s shoulders, seating her on a stool in front of the stove, indicating that she should help with the fire while he prepared to cook.

Axiang then looked at the firewood.

The body that had just been drenched by the rain felt cool sitting in front of the stove, but it soon began to warm up. The firewood burned here was sizable and didn’t need constant tending. With nothing else to do, Axiang watched Shagen cook.

He was indeed intending to have her stay for a meal.

The rice was already cooking on another stove, and Shagen began chopping vegetables. The vegetables in his basket were quite a mix, probably given by some kind-hearted elderly ladies in the village. Shagen didn’t think much of it and just chopped away. Axiang couldn’t sit still and went over to help him.

Initially, Shagen resisted, but Axiang said, "These are women’s tasks. You, being a man, shouldn’t be doing this sort of thing. Men should be chopping wood, splitting logs, and carrying stuff. The kitchen tasks are better left to me."

Upon hearing this, Shagen slowly handed the kitchen knife to Axiang, as if performing a very important ceremony. Axiang didn’t think too much of it, took the knife, and skillfully started chopping. She was very proficient, and it wasn’t long before she had finished chopping. Then she efficiently rinsed the wok and began to stir-fry the vegetables.

After finishing the vegetables, Shagen brought over a few eggs, given to him by someone, looking as if he usually couldn’t bear to eat them. Now that Axiang was there, he finally decided to use them.

Together, they prepared a simple meal. Axiang went to get the bowls and noticed that all of Shagen’s bowls were chipped. She didn’t know how long he had been using them, but it didn’t matter since she was just making do with a meal here.

The rain continued outside, but the atmosphere inside was extremely pleasant. Shagen and Axiang sat at a small table, eating the meal they had cooked. Concerned that Axiang might not have enough, Shagen kept offering her the stir-fried eggs.

Axiang had never been treated like this even in her parental home.

The last time she took an extra slice of egg at her parental home, she was scolded. Yet, here Shagen was, almost giving her all the eggs.

Her heart warmed, and she sighed.

The moment she sighed, Shagen thought she was unhappy and quickly looked at her anxiously. Axiang just smiled at him and then began to speak to herself, "I actually have two homes, one is my parental home, and the other, is my marital home. I will definitely not go back to my marital home, and as for my parental home... there’s no helping it, I have to go back no matter what. If I don’t go back there, where else can I go? I’m incapable on my own, I would probably starve outside, at least at my parent’s home I’d have a meal to eat. Sometimes I wonder, why is my life so tiring?"

Shagen just quietly listened, no longer eating.

Axiang chuckled, "It’s strange, I have a lot of things that I can’t say to others, but when I’m with you, I just say whatever I want to, however I want. I don’t know if you understand?"
