Chapter 219 A Dying Woman
Chapter 219: Chapter 219 A Dying Woman
A curious crowd stood outside a police-barricaded area, craning their necks to see the police van that had been racing moments ago, only to end up skidding off the road and going down the hill.
A man stood at a corner pointing to an orange sedan parked behind him with the bumper taken off.
"Excuse me, that van took off the bumper of my car! Seeing how they work for the government, shouldn’t the government reimburse me for the damage?"
The officer nodded.
"Leave your number and we’ll get back to you later."
With that, he left the civilian and walked into the scene.
As he left, the crowd began murmuring amongst themselves.
"I heard a police van was racing and didn’t believe it. Aren’t they the ones who usually chase me down to give me a speeding ticket when I’m harmlessly speeding?"
"Tell me about it. And it’s not like I speed on busy roads. I make sure the coast is clear before I do it, but those nutjobs still pull me over and give me a ticket."
"I pray the officers are punished properly and given eternal tickets. A taste of their own medicine doesn’t sound too bad!"
While they assumed this was just a normal accident caused by negligence, the police higher-ups were in shambles after hearing that a particular man was at the scene and promptly sent the Station Chief to meet him.
"Sir, you’re here. I understand you’re worried the accident might’ve happened closer to Adler Group since it’s just two miles from here."
"But once the missing officers are found, I assure you I will make sure they’re properly disciplined!"
Jett didn’t respond as he kept eyes pinned on the police van being pulled up by a tow truck.
Inching toward it, he bent over and peered into the vehicle, his tense shoulders immediately relaxed when he didn’t find blood anywhere.
Just thirty minutes ago, one of the men he stationed to watch for Kelsie and Keira sent him a photo of Kelsie getting arrested.
For people who kidnapped a mother and daughter in a school full of people and swarming with security, he knew they’d definitely have people in the force who’d know she’d been arrested, so he tracked the van himself only to find the car at the bottom of the cliff.
Thankfully, they seemed to have gotten off before the accident happened. Otherwise, there would’ve been quite a lot of blood left behind.
Pressing a finger to his eyes, he took a deep breath and glanced around.
"I donate to the city to put streetlights everywhere, but they pocket my money instead?"
The Station Chief laughed nervously and scratched the back of his head.
"It’s not like that, Mr. Adler. It’s just... since this road isn’t frequently patrolled, some sick bastards steal the expensive cameras we leave behind."
"So we stopped buying them entirely, but we made sure to put intense surveillance near your Adler Group."
"But regarding this matter, the station will take full responsibility and won’t stop until we find the officers responsible."
Jett exhaled silently, parting his lips to say something, but refrained from doing so the very next second and clamped it shut again.
His stoic expression made it difficult for the Station Chief to decide if he succeeded in soothing him or angered him with his answers, so he yelled out the first thought he recalled, "The mother and daughter who went missing today, I won’t eat or sleep until I find them!"
Jett didn’t bother responding and got into his car to drive out.
He didn’t stop driving until he reached Adler Group.
He parked in the parking lot outside and rolled down the window to peer at Craig Adler who stood outside with some guests, laughing over jokes.
Jett watched him for a while, checking the time every three seconds until a full minute passed.
When they still didn’t disperse, he grew impatient, got down from his car, and pulled a hammer from his boot before he unhurriedly walked over to them.
On the way, he swung the hammer slowly, deliberately, wearing his signature stoic expression.
The people with Craig noticed him approaching and turned to greet him politely, immediately expressing their surprise at the tool he was wielding.
"Oh, Mr. Adler! Since when do you go around with a hammer?"
"As a man of many talents, I expect nothing less from Jett Adler. But isn’t pounding a nail yourself a bit crude? We have carpenters for that."
"Yes, as a matter of fact, I know this excellent carpenter. I can call him up right now if you don’t mind."
Jett didn’t spare them a glance and scoffed, the corners of his lips curling up into a sly grin as he locked eyes with Craig.
"Who said I’m pounding a nail?"
Craig had a hunch, but quickly dismissed the possibility as they were in public.
Jett wouldn’t be so reckless.
"Then what could you possib..." Someone was still asking when Jett suddenly grabbed Craig and yanked him to the side.
Pressing him against the wall, he raised the hammer and slammed it against the back of Craig’s hand.
It happened so fast no one could react in time. The only thing that confirmed Jett hadn’t faked the slam was Craig’s gut-wrenching scream and the immediate reddening of the spot, streaked with blood.
"What the... what do you think you’re doing?! How could you hit your unc... arghhh!" Craig was lashing out from the pain when Jett raised it again and slammed it against his hand before he could finish.
"Tell me who took Kelsie and Keira." Jett spoke calmly, his eyes devoid of emotions as he raised the hammer again.
Craig gritted his teeth, "Who the hell is Keira and how the hell would I know the woman you’re going out with was kidn... ughhh!"
Jett made true his words and slammed the back of his hand with the hammer again.
Then he spurned him around and grabbed the other hand, his brows perking up as he threatened, "If the next word out of your mouth isn’t an answer, I’ll smash this hand and then your feet."
Craig clenched his jaw, noticing employees gathering around to watch the scene.
Hissing, he leered at Jett, "Whatever has gotten into you, remember we’re in public. Imagine what people will say about the President of Adler Group acting like..."
He was still talking when he saw Jett raise the hammer again.
Realizing Jett really didn’t care they were in public, he quickly pulled out his phone and threw it at him.
"Have it! Fucking have it!"
Jett paused and picked up the phone. "What is this?"
"His number is in there. I don’t know his name, but he promised to set me free, so I saved his contact as Freeman." Craig retorted through clenched teeth.
Jett’s eyes dimmed.
It was just as he thought.
"But I don’t know anything about a kidnapping! If he wanted to abduct someone, he would’ve told me!" Craig had just shouted in defense when they heard commotion at the gate.
"I already told you, she escaped from her kidnappers and got shot by one of them! No car would stop to help someone with a bullet wound, and this was the only place we could come to! She’s dying. Please, take her in one of your cars to the hospital!"
