Chapter 218: Chapter 218 ‘They’re’ Everywhere
Kelsie sat in the van, gently tilting her head to the side to stare into nothing.
Though the bag over her head was so thick she couldn’t see a thing, she could hear the heavy breathing of those around her.
"Can I at least know if my daughter is fine?"
The words had just rolled off her tongue when the van suddenly screeched to a halt.
The sudden braking threw everyone forward, and the people with her began hissing, yelling at the driver in irritation.
"Do you not know how to drive? You could’ve killed us just now!"
"Don’t shout at me. I only braked because a vehicle suddenly came in front of me. If I hadn’t, you’d probably be dead by now!" Judging from the response, she knew it had to be the driver.
"A vehicle? Just go the other way!"
"What a brilliant idea! Maybe I would’ve done that if this road wasn’t under construction and this lane wasn’t the only way out of here."
"We can’t afford to get to boss later than he asked us to. Someone get down there and drag that imbecile out of the way."
As soon as someone said that, she heard the door open and slowly turned her head toward the direction of the sound.
Just as she thought. The bag was unlike any she’d come across.
Even with it being the middle of the day, it managed to shield her from even the tiniest ray of sunshine.
She leaned back, resting her back behind her as she waited for whatever was going on to be resolved only to hear the driver snicker.
"What? Waving that bat around, does this punk want trouble?"
Instantly, the space lightened, clothes brushing against her and footsteps hitting the ground as more people got out of the van.
"He’s making us late. Make sure you beat him to a pulp!" The same voice that had been yelling at the driver shouted again.
"Erm, I think we should leave here right..." After a while, the driver began to speak again, his earlier perkiness nowhere to be found as his voice trembled slightly.
But he never got to finish his sentence as the sound of shattering glass suddenly filled the air, followed shortly by a gurgling noise.
All of a sudden, everywhere fell silent.
Confused, but realizing there was something wrong somewhere, Kelsie sat up again.
She had just done so when a pair of fingers wrapped themselves around her throat, the last person with her in the van gritting his teeth in agitation as he choked her, "There is someone outside. He’s beating up my guys. Killing them. Tell me. Is he one of...?"
He yelped in pain mid-sentence and released his grip on her, then abruptly went silent.
Kelsie clenched her jaw, slowly turning her head toward the door.
Though she couldn’t see, she could feel the piercing gaze on her.
Crossing the men they sent to abduct her, was this a scheme to scare her even more?
"Whatever issue we have, there’s no need to involve my daughter. You can’t blame her for something I did wrong." She had just voiced out when she heard front door open.
Shortly after, the engine roared to life, and the van slowly drove off.
Relieved that this person had listened to her, Kelsie leaned back in her seat and patiently waited.
After driving for a while, the buzzing sound of the city filled her ears, and she frowned slightly.
Hiding in plain sight. Clever.
Just as the thought crossed her mind, the door opened again and the person began unchaining her.
Raising both hands to show she wouldn’t try anything funny, she was suddenly yanked out of the van.
As the person pulled her, she caught a whiff of their cologne.
She waited, expecting to be pushed forward but to her surprise, all she heard was the van starting up again. She quickly pulled the bag off her head.
Her eyes locked onto the van, and without thinking, she ran after it in disbelief.
"No! Wait! Take me! Take me and release my daughter! Please!"
Nearby, two police officers on patrol spotted an agitated woman running after a speeding vehicle and grew concerned.
They looked her over, and seeing that she was wearing decent clothes, knew she wasn’t one of the street junkies.
The female officer was the first to approach, trying to calm her down, "Ma’am, I need you to calm down."
Committing the van’s license plate number to memory, Kelsie stopped and gritted her teeth, "That vehicle took my daughter!"
She was in such a panic, she didn’t realize how irrational her words sounded.
After all, the a vehicle taking someone didn’t make much sense.
Her state made it even harder for the officers to take her seriously.
The male officer walked toward them, repeating again, "Ma’am, I’m going to need you to calm down."
Kelsie tilted her head to look at them.
"I am calm."
"You didn’t look like it a moment ago."
"That’s because my daughter was kidnapped."
"How long ago was that?"
"I don’t know. Maybe an hour or two. I would’ve shown you her picture, but I’m not with my phone."
The officers exchanged wary glances.
Confused. Disoriented. Loss of belongings. Just as they suspected.
This woman was using.
The female officer sighed, placing a hand on her waist, "I hate to break it to you, ma’am, but we’ve been standing here for over an hour and no one was kidnapped. Let alone a kid."
"Now I’m going to need you to slowly raise your hands and place them behind your head. I will come up to you slowly."
"I don’t have that time. I have to find my daughter." Kelsie shook her head instead and turned around to leave.
All she had to do was look up the van’s plate number. Though she had a feeling she might find it burnt somewhere, it was still a nice start to finding Keira.
She had just taken a step forward when the man took out his taser to tase her.
She gritted her teeth and knocked it away, only to be tased from behind by the female officer.
As she fell to the ground weakened, the male officer helped her up, taking her to the police van where he cuffed her so she wouldn’t harm herself.
The female officer got into the driver’s seat while the man assumed the front passenger seat.
They drove for a while, the officers exchanging light conversations, though it all sounded distant to Kelsie’s ears.
Ignoring the sharp pain on the side of her neck, she pressed a finger to her aching head, and leaned forward, "You don’t understand. My daughter was kidnapped at her school. They were supposed to take me in exchange for her."
The man glanced at her through the rearview mirror for a long moment.
Noticing how hard she tried to keep her eyes open, he glanced at his colleague, "Hey, we didn’t tase her that much. Why does she look like she’s drugged?"
The woman looked at her through the rearview mirror and chuckled, "That’s because she’s a junkie. Must be missing one of her shots."
The man couldn’t help nodding in agreement, but something about Kelsie suddenly dozing off in the backseat didn’t seat well with him.
"But junkies also have children. And from what I know, most of them love their kids. I’m just going to check if a child matching her description has been reported missing."
He took out a notebook and pen, angling his body slightly toward her, "Lady, tell me your name, your child’s name, and where she went missing."
Kelsie didn’t know what was wrong, but she could feel it. She could feel her body shutting down on its own.
Digging a finger into the back of her hand to stay awake, she parted her lips to respond, but all that came out was a stutter, "K-Keira Sutton..."
He immediately frowned. "Keira Sutton? Sounds oddly familiar. Where have I heard that?"
Just then, a voice crackled from their radio.
"There’s an ongoing search for a mother and daughter. Kelsie Sutton is the mother and Keira Sutton is the daughter. Their photos have been forwarded to each of..."
He quickly reached for the radio, ready to speak into it when the female officer suddenly drew her gun, cocked it, and pointed it at him.
