Chapter 211 The Truth About The Tournament
Chapter 211: Chapter 211 The Truth About The Tournament
Inside the locker room, Jesse sat on the floor, knees drawn to his chest as he stared into nothing.
Hearing the door open, he hurriedly buried his head in-between his legs and shook his head vigorously.
"I don’t care what you say, I’m not participating!"
For three seconds, he heard nothing.
Just as he was about to raise his head to see if there was really no one in the room with him, he heard approaching footsteps and buried his head again.
"For some reason, knowing you throw a bigger tantrum at school besides when you’re with me, makes me relieved."
Jesse’s brows knitted into a frown hearing the voice he least expected.
Glancing behind him, he ignored Jett who was leaning on a locker and searched the room with his eyes for the teacher earlier.
When he didn’t see him anywhere, he shifted his gaze back to Jett, squinting his eyes at him.
"Dadd..." The words had almost rolled off his tongue when he abruptly stopped talking and threw his face to the side with a huff, "You.. what are you doing here?"
A smile tugged the corners of Jett’s lips, but he pretended not to notice Jesse’s slip of tongue and walked toward him.
Standing in front of him, he slipped both hands into his pockets and shrugged, "Mommy came with the nanny and they’re both excited to see you on the mat. Don’t tell me... son, are you throwing a tantrum to get her here?"
"Why would you say... I’m not that problematic!" Jesse was rendered speechless.
Jett stared at him, a disbelieving look in his eyes as his brows perked up slightly, "Oh? Then what are you doing refusing to participate?"
"If you’re scared of being beaten on the mat, why didn’t you sign up for boxing like your brother?"
Jesse’s eyes fell guiltily, his little body slumping against the wall as he retorted slowly.
"At first, they didn’t care what I did as long as I won, now they’re saying I have to beat the opponent until they’re down on the mat and unable to get up. Of what use is it when I can still get a point by hitting them gently?"
Jett turned to a poster of the tournament on one of the lockers.
He ran his eyes through it for a moment before turning to his son again.
"Well, I’m your coach now and as your coach, I’ve seen that it’s only stated in the rules to score enough points to win. There’s no rule saying there has to be an intense beatdown."
Jesse’s eyes were still dull before Jett’s words registered in his head, his eyes snapping toward him in disbelief.
"You... are you saying I can compete however makes me comfortable as long as I score enough points to move forward?"
Jett didn’t nod immediately.
One of his hands reached up to gently tug his tie. "I’m glad we’re on the same page."
"Okay, Coach Daddy!" Jesse was so excited he didn’t realize what he said.
He got up, tightened his robe and rushed out of the locker room.
The locker room was just behind the school’s auditorium.
It was half the size of a standard football field, yet, it was buzzing with people.
As one of the first few to arrive, Kelsie, Eric and the nanny took their seats in front.
Currently, Kelsie was helping put a mouthguard in Jesse’s mouth.
Jesse scanned the audience with his eyes.
When he saw Kelsie, he left Jett and ran toward to her, but Zade was being called upon by his coach at that moment and had to leave.
Kelsie and Jett exchanged a silent glance as she held his face to plant a kiss on both his cheeks.
Then she reached for one of the pop corns beside her.
"Hey, baby. I got you a pop corn thinking the next time you’d be out here would be to watch the tournament with us."
Jesse beamed and reached for the pop corn.
"Daddy said I can compete however I want."
She was taken aback hearing ’daddy’.
If her memory served her right, which she knew it was, this was her very first time hearing him refer to Jett as such.
"Did he now?"
"It’s Coach, Jesse. Right now I’m your coach, not your daddy." Jett pursed his lips beside him.
Jesse rolled his eyes and didn’t bother to spare him a glance.
"Coach Daddy, I got it. No need to enunciate it several times. I’m not daft, you know?"
Then he moved over to the nanny who eagerly ruffled his hair as encouragement.
Meanwhile, Jett turned to Kelsie.
"I don’t see our daughter anywhere."
Kelsie popped a pop corn into her mouth, responding as she chewed on it, "She was the first to find us. She left to the back with her friend before Zade came."
Jett parted his lips to say something, but refrained from doing so when a suited man appeared on the Jumbotrons.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I’m Jerome Williams and I welcome you to this year’s Martial Arts Tournament!
"This tournament comprises of; ballet, fencing, boxing and karate. To open the tournament, let’s invite our dazzling ray of sunshines onto the stage!"
Immediately, the curtains behind him parted and a group of young girls walked out of it.
For such young children, their performance was so good it moved some people to tears.
Jett and Kelsie were the only ones who didn’t understand how any of this was touching, but regardless of what they thought, their fingers wouldn’t stop taking pictures.
When the ballet dance ended, Keira skipped to be with her parents, sitting between Kelsie and the nanny while Jett went to the back with Jesse.
The concept of the tournament was different from what they were used to.
Since fencing, karate and boxing all had individual grand prizes, most of the parents had their children compete in both boxing and karate.
Furthermore, all three individual grand prizes could be claimed by the same person as long as they won fair and square.
Kelsie only found that out as she went through the program being distributed.
The first boxer to climb the stage was a tall and hunky ginger-haired kid.
Though he was in Jesse and Zade’s class, he was tall and muscular for a kid his age.
His opponent was a lanky kid who looked unwilling to box against him.
From the moment he entered, he raised both hands in surrender, clearly indicating his unwillingness to fight.
However, the ginger-haired boy didn’t care at all and delivered blows after blows until the boy was down.
When he tried to attack the kid again, the referee rushed into the ring.
Kelsie frowned slightly and glanced around just to be sure she wasn’t seeing things.
Realizing none of the parents were saying anything, she also said nothing and returned her eyes to the ring.
On the second round, the lanky boy tried to fight back, but he had just gotten closer to his opponent when a deadly strike to the head sent him down to the floor.
Zade sucked in a deep breath.
Jesse glanced up at his father.
Jett frowned and Kelsie leaned forward in disbelief.
"What nonsense is this? They’re not teenagers, they shouldn’t be fighting so roughly!"
"Ma’am, did you not read about the tournament before you came in here?" A woman beside her laughed.
Kelsie glanced at her, picking up the program again. "I know it’s a school tournament."
A ripple of laughter went through those who heard her and they began chipping in one after the other.
"Every year, different schools hosts this Martial Arts Tournaments and there’s a grand prize of 2 million for whoever wins. The winner also gets social media coverage and a contract of three years to learn martial arts while being paid."
"Sometimes, they also get fully-funded scholarships into any high school of their choice. Everyone wants to win the prize money, why would they care about their children’s age?"
"You think I mercilessly trained my daughter to master boxing and karate for the past one year to have her playfully shove the other kids? Hell no! I honestly couldn’t care less if she has to break someone’s spine to win."
