Chapter 185: Chapter 185 Jane Peterson’s Countermeasure

"Look at that, Ms. Sutton is here. I almost thought this busy woman was going to be late."

The words were yet out of his mouth when the judge snorted, properly balancing his glasses on his nose.

"Busy? Please! She’s not the only one who is busy. If you didn’t beg me this morning to pitch you in today, this hearing wouldn’t be going on anytime soon."

Bryan didn’t bother to hide his mockery as he laughed.

Folding his hands across his chest, he sat up properly and sucked his teeth in though.

"Now that I think of it, this hearing should’ve happened sooner. That way, Ms. Sutton here would’ve long learned her place."

Jane threw her bag on the table and spurned around to look at him stoically, "Mr. Baker, I’d ask that you don’t address my client directly. If you have something to say to her, say it to me."

Bryan couldn’t defend himself nor did he want to admit he was wrong, so his lawyers quickly changed the subject by snickering.

"Ms. Peterson, your client has no respect for this court. Do you know how long we’ve been waiting for you two?"

Kelsie barely paid them any heed and quietly took her seat while Jane glanced at the time on her wristwatch.

"Your honor, the time scheduled for this hearing is in a minute. Regardless of when you got here, that doesn’t make us late. Since we’re still on time."

Bryan’s lawyers were greatly taken aback by how fluent and smooth she was.

She chose her words so carefully they had nothing to nitpick on. And frankly, they didn’t think she’d be so bold.

From what they knew, she was just a nameless lawyer. So nameless they couldn’t find out anything about her despite looking for six whole months.

Someone like her was bound to be intimidated by lawyers as imposing as imposing as them.

Jane ignored the supposed look in their eyes and took her seat beside Kelsie.

Across from them, the judge smiled forcefully and butted in, "Now that Ms. Sutton and her lawyer, Ms. Peterson are here, let’s proceed quickly. Would you like to begin, Ms. Peterson?"

"Absolutely." The woman hummed and got on her feet, "On July 15th of this year, Bryan Baker stalked my client, Kelsie Sutton to a hotel where she was having lunch with two acquaintances and accused her of..."

"Objection!" One of Bryan’s lawyers yelled loudly, shooting out of his seat.

The judge glanced at Kelsie and Jane, then leaned back and casually waved his hand at the lawyer, "Sustained."

"Thank you, your honor." Bryan’s lawyer first thanked him before he glanced at Jane and snorted, "First of all, my client wasn’t stalking your client. He was sent the location by his fiancée, Laura Sutton."

"And what he did wasn’t accusing her. He merely stated facts to two unsuspecting young men who didn’t seem to know she had children."

"Since when did sharing information about someone become an accusation? Or are you merely saying this because your client was engaged to him in the past before they called it off?"

Kelsie sighed softly, squeezing both her eyes shut.

No wonder they made it a closed hearing.

These crude bastards knew the law like the back of their hands. It was no surprise they planned to have a field day twisting the whole narrative.

But to be fair, she didn’t expect anything to come out of this. She wasn’t powerful enough to go against the Baker family in terms of connections.

However, this hearing was going to serve it purpose of bringing awareness to her past relationship with the Baker family to the public’s eyes.

Bryan Baker was just as conniving as the Sutton family, so once the public becomes aware of him, she’d have surveillance on him at all times.

But Jane assured her she had everything under control and as someone with a good record of winning court cases, she didn’t have any reason to doubt her.

With that reassurance in mind, she zoned out of the clamoring voices and took out her phone.

Earlier, Zoe mentioned a prestigious school burning down.

The mere sniffle of a smoke was reported on the city’s news channel. Yet, the burning of a prestigious school wasn’t?

Not even the tabloids said anything about it and it was instead being shared by word of the mouth?

Strange. Too strange.

Like she expected, when she searched up a recent school burning, nothing came up. So after trying her hand at different search words, she just gave up and found a word puzzle game to play.

Bryan suddenly glanced at her, his eyes knitting into a tight frown when he saw her staring at her device with intense fixation.

He waited.

Thirty seconds. Two minutes. Three minutes.

In three whole minute, she didn’t look up. Not even once. It was as though the arguement going on in front of her had nothing to do with her.

After a whole, he cleared his throat deeply, successfully gaining everyone’s attention before he huffed.

"It seems Ms. Sutton doesn’t care about this court hearing at all. Which is strange because if I remember correctly, she’s the one who sued me."

While everyone’s gaze shifted to Kelsie, Jane warned through clenched teeth, "Ms. Baker, for the second and, I hope, last time, I’m going to ask you not to address my coiner directly."

Bang!

The judge suddenly slammed his palm against the desk, breathing heavily as he angrily hissed.

"Why does your client have her head buried in her phone when she’s in a court hearing, Ms. Peterson?"

Him slamming his palm against the desk was enough to make Kelsie pause her game.

Lifting her eyes to meet the judge’s, she answered instead, "I apologize if I appear imposing or disrespectful, your honor. But I didn’t bring my lawyer here so I’d do the talking."

"If the plan was to defend myself here, I wouldn’t have gone through the hassle of hiring such an expensive lawyer."

Knowing she was right, the lawyer thinned his lips and said nothing.

Bryan’s lips twitched in irritation.

She was still so sharp-tongued. So confident.

Why? From the moment she walked in, he made sure to make her see he was right with the judge.

Anyone with a functioning brain would know the hearing was just a formality, but why were they so calm?

Did they have a counter-measure in their sleeves?

He didn’t have to think too hard before canceling that idea.

He and his lawyers already looked everything through.

Nothing they’d come up with would make this hearing go in their favor. Absolutely nothing.

Tilting his head to the side a little, he raised a questioning brow, "You were pretty agitated that day when you sued me. Does it not matter to you anymore what I babbled that day?"

Counting three of her fingers, she chuckled bitterly, "Of course it does, Mr. Baker. Why else would I hire Jane Peterson as my lawyer, wait six months, and even attend this hearing?"

"So you’re holding the court in contempt, then!" Bryan’s lawyers accused her out of nowhere.

"Excuse me?" The accusation was so ridiculous Kelsie felt she misheard.

But the judge didn’t seem to care about that and quickly clung onto the lawyer’s words.

"The hearing will only go on for a short while and then you’d be free to play on your phone as long as you want."

"But you use it when you know you shouldn’t. If that isn’t holding the court in contempt, then I don’t know what this is!" Cheekily added Bryan’s second lawyer.

Jane frowned hard.

"Not only are you accusing my client, but you’re interrogating her when she isn’t on the witness stand. Do you think I’d let this slide?"

"I’m not doing any of those! It is totally within my right to question her. Your honor, tell her!" The same lawyer sneered, the mockery in his eyes deepening when the judge sniffled a little.

"He has every right to question her. I’d advice not to cut him off again."

Jane instinctively went silent while Kelsie couldn’t believe her eyes and ears.

Seeing supposed helplessness on their faces, Bryan rose to his full length, tilting his head to Kelsie as he asked proudly, "Do you understand it now? You’ll never win against me. Not without the help of any of those men you ate with the other day."

"Seeing how they haven’t been in contact with you recently, they must’ve taken my advice. So I’ll give you another piece of valuable advice now and hope you’ll take it."

"Give up. Give up now and let’s go outside together. There, you’ll apologize to me in front of the press and say this whole thing was a mistake."

His haughty words had just fallen when Jane raised her head again.

"I am not comfortable with you being the judge presiding over this case. I want a change of judge."

"Why? Do you feel it’s unfair since the judge is a close friend of my family’s and you think it’ll go in my favor no matter what you say?" Bryan immediately tutted, clicking his tongue.

Jane said nothing and instead, took out a piece of paper and approached the clerk.

"What... how do you have this?" The judge’s hands trembled when he laid eyes on the content of the paper. fre.ewebnov el.com

Bryan and his lawyers paused.

Jane returned to her seat and lowered her head slightly in apology.

"Your honor, I didn’t want to bring this up, but your daughter, the one who left home three months ago, was in a driving accident some weeks ago and came to me to defend her."

"Since working with her, I’ve come to know she doesn’t like publicity, and if the media finds out I’m representing your daughter, it’s only natural they’ll think this hearing was hijacked by me from the start."

Though it didn’t sound like it, it was a threat the judge understood too well.
