Chapter 161: Chapter 161 Let’s Be Servile
Bryan stiffened, "What do you mean? Why?"
Before Eric could say anything, an elated Jerry hurriedly stepped towards Jett.
"Mr. Adler, it’s really an honor to have you here! So, you’re here with my daughter..." He paused and cautiously glanced between the due, slowly wetting his dry lips with his tongue.
"This is a stretch, but I think I heard you say something about dating my daughter?"
Straining the words ’my daughter’ on purpose, he flashed Jett a knowing smile.
Jett’s impression of him wasn’t a good one, but he seeing how fast Jett caught onto what he said earlier, he was about to nod in affirmation when Kelsie cut him off.
"I’m not sure what you heard earlier, but Mr. Adler owns the apartment building I live in, as you know."
Jett quietly sighed in protest, but remained silent.
Jerry’s smile cracked, embarrassment washing over him as he apologized to Jett.
"Ah, I see. My apologies, sir. It’s just a big honor to have you here. I have this 30 years old Chardonnay in my study. If it’s not too much to ask, I’d love to drink it with you."
Jett met his eyes, the amusement swirling around in them flying past Jerry’s head.
He didn’t believe humans were entirely fond of forgiving and forgetting. Especially businessmen like Jerry.
It was normal to be hostile to the other person after a squabble. How much more when your reputation was almost tarnished?
Yet, this man was simply going to act like nothing happened? Like he hadn’t lost almost everything he owned to him? Even his reputation wasn’t left out.
As a businessman and human in general, thick-skinned people were those he hated the most as they could be plotting your death in one room while dining and laughing with you in another.
As his impression of Jerry grew worse, a long silence ensued between them and Jerry’s ears turned a faint hue of pink as he flushed in embarrassment once more.
Laura couldn’t handle her father being ignored with so many people watching and took a step towards Jett.
"My father has been waiting to meet you to apologize for what happened four months ago."
"You see, he knows he was wrong. No matter what happened, he shouldn’t have called you Kelsie’s boy toy."
"But when you look at it, it wasn’t entirely his fault. Had Kelsie spoken up on time about who you were, none of these would’ve happened."
"And given the type of person my father is, I don’t doubt you two would’ve be the best of friends by now."
Jett snapped out of his daze and shifted his attention to her, eyes falling on her smudged dress.
Realizing this, she grew conscious of her miserable state again and glared hard at Kelsie.
"It sounds like you’re blaming me. You think I was immature in dealing with the matter the way I did?" Jett asked calmly, his left brow perking up slightly.
Laura hurriedly shook her head, "Not at all! You did what you had to do. I’m just saying this would’ve been avoided if Kelsie had said something on time."
"I know you treat those who live in the apartment building with respect, but has it ever occurred to you that she might’ve set you up?"
Jett exhaled sharply, "Really?"
Eric and Kelsie could tell he was getting annoyed from his tone, but Laura mistook it for curiousity and eagerly began blabbing.
"Listen to this. If my father hadn’t been so kind-hearted, he would’ve told the media what happened and how a certain head of a conglomerate was abusing his power by suing him witb his legions of lawyers."
"Imagine what that could’ve done to your stock prices. Not only would it fall, but values of the apartment buildings under your name would do the same."
"Who do you think stands to benefit the most if something like that actually happens? Think carefully and also look beside you before you answer."
Kelsie was astonished.
What in the name of sabotaging was this?
Laura looked and sounded so serious that the guests were slowly nodding in agreement, finding sense in her words.
If Jett was as shallow as them, there’s no doubt he’d also fall for her words.
"What do you think, Mr. Adler? Did that possibility ever occur to you?" Five seconds later, Laura impatiently called out to him again as he was yet to retort.
Jett’s brows knitted into a serious frown, seeming to think about it for a moment before he shook his head in refusal.
"Not at all."
A sharp laugh escaped Laura’s lungs as she began clapping excitedly, "Hah! I knew it! From what I see, she used that opportunity to get close to you. That’s just the kind of person she is."
"That is also why our Sutton family stayed away from her the entire four months we were caught in the lawsuit with you."
Jett’s frown deepened.
Seeing this, Deborah realized her daughter was really getting through him.
Sighing exaggeratedly, she turned to chastise Laura half-heartedly, "Don’t say such things about your sister."
"I’m sure she had a reason for doing what she did. As long as no one was harmed in the process, it’s all good."
While it sounded like she was reprimanding Laura and taking Kelsie’s side, she was actually adding fuel to the fire.
She also made it sound like Kelsie was some spoiled princess whom the Sutton family allowed to do whatever she wanted as long as it didn’t harm anyone.
Jett slowly turned to glance at Kelsie for a second before returning his attention to Laura, ending her early jubilation by saying, "But it doesn’t sound likely."
"Pardon?" She blurted out, her bright smile gradually fading.
Jett moved his palm towards his face, gently stroking the short stubbles on his chin as he said, "You see, Ms. Sutton here didn’t pay for just one annum."
"And given how big the Adler Group is, it’ll only take a couple days before the stock prices go back to normal."
"It’s not enough time for anyone to do anything and it won’t benefit her in anyway. So I find your theory a bit lacking."
"Theory? What do you mean theory? I’m only telling you what..." Laura smiled nervously, attempting to defend herself when the man cut her off with a snort.
"And I’m saying it’s lacking. If you really want to make her out to be a bad person, you should find a better reason which won’t be easily disputed. Or does it just bother you your big sister is close with me?"
"Of course not!" Laura didn’t think twice before refuting, her face squeezing up in disgust. "Kelsie may not be the dream big sister, but that doesn’t make her any less my sister."
By the side, Kelsie yawned in boredom.
This was a party, not a circus.
She had big expectations for it, yet all she got was the celebrant turning herself into the circus’ clown.
Checking the time, she said to Jerry, "Father, since I’ve shown my face here, I’ll be leaving now. I had a long day at work and I’m going to have an even longer day tomorrow."
She had just turned around to leave when he hurriedly called out to her.
"You came alone? I remember telling you to come with your children, why didnt you?"
Gently massaging her cheeks, Deborah strolled to stand beside Jerry, flashing Kelsie a tired smile.
"Yes, why didn’t you? We may not know whose children they are, but they’re still part of our Sutton family. You should’ve brought them to meet their grandparents and aunt."
A second later, Laura chimed in, "Don’t tell me you didn’t come with them because you’re ashamed."
From Jett and Eric’s point of view, this was them ganging up on Kelsie, but from the guests’ point of view, this was just another juicy gossip which was likely to end up on the 8 o’clock news tomorrow morning.
With her back turned to them, Kelsie’s eyes dimmed in rage and she clenched her jaw tightly.
However, instead of responding, she continued walking away, much to Laura’s dissatisfaction.
Kelsie had humiliated her so severely just now. She’d be a fool to let her leave without doing the same!
"What? You’re not saying anything. I must be right then. So why did you make such a mistake?"
"If you wanted the touch of a man so badly, why didn’t you go to your fiancé? Oh, wait. You couldn’t. You were in a bar when that happened, weren’t you?"
"We actually thought you were a good girl because you barely left the house, who knew you had such an obscure habit."
"Unfortunately, the damage has been done already and there’s nothing else daddy can do about it, so be truthful with me, was that the first time you slept with a man?"
Almost immediately, she clicked her tongue mockingly and continued, "Don’t answer that. I don’t want to know how your bastards were..."
She flinched, subconsciously taking a step backward when Kelsie suddenly spurned around, approaching her.
"Wh-what? You have such a scary look on your face. What is it? Do you want to fight?"
In reply. Kelsie stopped in front of her and...
Smack!
Laura’s face shot up instantly, clutching her slapped cheek, eyes widened in disbelief, "You crazy wench! What do you think you’re..."
Smack!
"Hey! Hit me one more time and I’ll..."
Smack!
This time, she staggered backward and knowing she was no match for Kelsie, tried to hurry towards Jerry when Kelsie pulled her back and slapped her again.
At this, Jerry trembled all over in rage and roared, "What do you think you’re doing? Do you have no respect for your father!"
Kelsie tilted her clouded eyes to meet his, lips curling up in contempt.
"Why is hitting a spoilt brat like her considered having no respect instead of me disciplining her?"
"You... how dare you hit your little sister!" Before he could say anything, an enraged Deborah blindly lunged towards Kelsie.
But Jett conveniently stepped in her way, holding both her trembling hands as he downplayed lazily, "Hold on, Mrs. Sutton, let’s be servile now, okay?"
