Chapter 128: Chapter 128 Fever Clogs The Brain

"Dr. Sutton, he’s burning up!"

The nurse’s sudden yell instantly distracted her from recalling where she had heard the voice before.

She rushed into the room to check his temperature and other vitals again, brows creasing slightly when she was done.

She stared at the number on the thermometer.

Everything else was normal with him, but his fever was suddenly spiking. For no reason.

"Dr. Sutton, should I call the hospital?" The nurse asked worriedly.

"Give me a moment." Kelsie calmly waved her aside.

This was something simple, yet difficult at the same time. He was supposed to be fine. It was just a simple fever.

So why was he burning up like this?

After thinking for a while, she mummed, "Ask his assistant if he has eaten yet."

Because she was in a hurry, she had left the door ajar and two men in the living room had also heard the nurse’s yell and rushed in.

But Daniel quickly hid behind the wall when he recognized Kelsie, while Eric strutted in, shaking his head in disagreement.

"Mr. Adler doesn’t eat breakfast and he has lunch by 2pm. Any earlier than that and he’d fall ill."

Kelsie was slightly taken aback, recalling he had insisted she take him to have breakfast the other day.

Didn’t he eat that morning? She suddenly couldn’t remember.

The nurse quickly thought of something and voiced out.

"Doctor, if that’s the case, then it won’t be in our advantage forcing him to eat something."

"Since the drugs didn’t work, doing it the old fashioned way won’t also work." She paused for a moment to touch Kelsie’s body and exhaled in relief when she found it warm.

"Body heat always works like magic. Why don’t you get in bed with him to warm him up?"

The room instantly fell silent.

A moment later, Eric began taking off his suit jacket, repeating, "Body heat will do the trick?"

Then he tried to walk towards the bed, but a firm hand reached forward to drag him back.

Daniel glared hard at him, quickly making him realize his words could be misinterpreted the wrong way.

There were already rumors that Jett was into men, but he still suggested something like this in front of people?

If this got to people outside, Jett would never be able to beat the allegations.

This was the conclusion he came upon while Daniel had reacted the way he did because he tried to come between a naturally bonding experience for Kelsie and Jett.

This one encounter he hadn’t schemed with the triplet and Eric almost ruined it.

If only he had nothing to hide, he’d lean forward to give this man a heavy knock!

"I guess I’ll have to trouble you into doing this, Dr. Sutton. In return, your salary for the month will be multiplied by three." Eric spoke up after a minute of silence.

Daniel immediately raised five fingers, prompting him to change his words.

"Five. Haven Medical Center will multiply it by five."

The nurse who had merely suggested that Kelsie be the one to warm Jett up blinked in realization.

"What about me? Does the offer still stand if I keep Mr. Adler warm?"

Kelsie nodded, but Eric shook his head.

"Dr. Sutton is someone we know, so it’s only right that she does it. I wouldn’t want to burden a stranger I just met today."

The nurse hurriedly waved her hand at him.

"What? A stranger? Who cares if I’m a stranger? I don’t mind at all!"

Kelsie threw a stern glance her way.

"Hey, why do you make this sound like something fun?"

"If’s not?"

Kelsie and Eric scoffed at once. Then paused and glanced at each other.

Eric stared at her for a while before he took a step backward.

"Do you need your privacy?" Without waiting for her response and under the guidance of Daniel, the man immediately beckoned onto the nurse.

"We’ll leave you two alone. You don’t have to worry about us. We’ll make sure to knock before we come in."

Then he closed the door behind them.

Just as it was about to jam, Daniel’s finger came in-between, his other hand on the doorknob.

Kelsie didn’t pay much attention to the door. After standing still for several seconds, she took off her coat and hung it on the coat rack behind her.

Afterwards, she slid into the space beside Jett. The moment her body touched his, his clattering teeth gradually whined down, and his sturdy arm snaked around her, drawing her closer to him.

Kelsie held her breath, narrowing her eyes slightly at the realization that this embrace seemed familiar.

Placing his jaw on the side of her neck, a relieved exhale escaped his lips.

Seeing them in this intimate position, Daniel cautiously pushed open the door a little wider to take a picture.

He took several before closing the door, just enough to give them privacy, but didn’t jam it knowing he’d draw their attention.

Then he instructed Eric not to check in on them unless two hours had passed.

Two hours later, Eric returned to the room. The moment his fingers touched the door as he attempted to knock, the door flew open, exposing the two people embracing each other under the duvet.

The nurse, who was right behind him, didn’t know when she gasped.

A silent hush followed almost immediately from the man on the bed.

"Who is there? Go away before you wake her."

Eric cautiously jammed the door close and stood in front of it for several seconds in thought.

Meanwhile, the nurse was beaming shyly.

"I just had a feeling they knew each other. No wonder she didn’t bother to address the rumors."

"She probably felt it was better for people to think she came in through the help of the hospital’s founders whereas it was all because of her..."

Eric raised a questioning brow, interrupting her, "What nonsense are you spouting?"

She subconsciously flinched, but released her breath recalling it was just him. "You scared me!"

He pressed his lips into a thin line and absentmindedly placed both hands on her shoulders, leading her into the corridor before the living room.

"What did you just say?"

She thought for a moment.

"You scared me?"

"Before that. "

"Oh, there’s a rumor going around the department that Dr. Sutton has the hospital’s founder backing her."

"Why?"

"Because they personally recruited her. Some doctors in the neurosurgery department has refused to believe it’s simply because she’s just skilled."

"Is that so?"

The woman nodded.

"By the way, do you like me?"

"What do you mean?"

"You’re squeezing my shoulders."

He blinked in realization and hurriedly took his hands off her, murmuring to her hearing, "My apologies."

Then he walked off.

The woman stared at his retreating figure in confusion, wondering why he was suddenly annoyed.

"What’s wrong with him?"

Almost immediately, the door to Jett’s room swung open and the duo walked out.

Jett had already prepared to go to work before the fever set in. So he was still putting on his suit pant and white shirt.

For the first time ever, the nurse realized Kelsie’s face was all flushed as she walked in the opposite direction, the suddenly heathy man following after her.

"I’m going to ignore the fact my doctor slept on my arm for an hour and ask you what are we?"

She didn’t stop to look at him as she said, "That was unprofessional of me and I apologize for it, Mr. Adler."

"I checked your vitals earlier, you’re fine now. But to regain your strength fully, I’ll prescribe some drugs and have it sent to you later."

"No need to send it. I’ll pick it up myself."

She didn’t argue with him and just nodded, "If you say so."

Walking beside her, he turned to look at her face.

"I barely saw you in the last three months. You either left early or came home so late. From today, henceforth, I’ll be waiting outside the hospital to drive home with you."

Kelsie ignored him and stopped walking, glancing around for a moment before the nurse came out of a corner.

She froze.

"How long have you been standing there?"

"Since you came out with Mr. Adler."

Jett noticed the ID on the woman’s neck and introduced himself.

"I’m Jett Adler."

The nurse gulped down nervously, unable to look him in the eyes now that he was well.

"I’m aware, sir. It’s an honor to meet you!"

A mischievous smile creased his face.

"Are you also aware that Dr. Sutton and I are going out?"

"We’re leaving now." The words were yet out of his mouth when Kelsie turned and began walking away.

"I’ll pick you after work today, babe!" He shamelessly yelled after her.

The entire three minutes Kelsie stayed in the elevator with the nurse, the same nurse who hadn’t been quiet for more than ten seconds on their way to the apartment building, didn’t say a word.

When they came out of it, Kelsie laughed awkwardly, gently massaging the back of her neck.

"Mr. Adler’s fever seems to have clogged his brain. That’s why he’s behaving abnormally."

The nurse huffed, turning her face to the side in annoyance.

"You were lying when you said you didn’t know him. How low of you to try to brainwash me."

Kelsie smacked her lips tiredly, explaining the situation to her before she could stop herself, "We live in the same apartment building and see each other from time to time."

"Just because I see the same person when I go to work everyday and we greet each other doesn’t mean we’re friends, does it?"

"That is for me to decide. Quit trying to brainwash me." The nurse clenched her jaw angrily as she got into the back of the van.

Kelsie sighed softly and tried to get in after her, but paused and glanced behind her for a moment.

She eye-searched the place for several seconds. When she didn’t see anyone suspicious, she got into the van and closed the door.

In the passenger seat of a black sedan parked just a few meters away from the van, Craig Adler had his phone pressed against his right ear. "You were right. He really is seeing someone."

The man on the other end hummed, "It’s simple now. If you want him to abdicate his position, follow her and hold her hostage."

Craig sighed heavily.

"There’s nothing more important to him like Adler Group. He’ll never give it up for a woman."

There was silence for a moment before the man chuckled.

"You don’t know that."

Then the line went dead.
