Chapter 30: Secondary Class Quest

“Flame Infusion!”

Jiang Chen changed the element of his arrows. Due to the vast level difference between him and the ogres, a suppression effect had already occurred. He had to rely on skill buffs to compensate.

For every 5-level difference, player damage is reduced by 20%. Flame Infusion happened to increase damage by 20%, almost completely offsetting the damage reduction.

“Whoosh whoosh whoosh…”

Under the Rapidfire skill, the flaming arrows looked like a fire serpent shooting straight ahead.

Puff puff puff puff!

Four sounds rang out in succession, and the ogre’s health instantly bottomed out. At that moment, it also regained consciousness from its dizziness. With a furious roar, it swung its weapon—but the next wave of flaming arrows rained down again.

-663!

-601!

-1324!

Plop!

A critical hit was triggered once again, and the ogre crashed to the ground.

“Roar!”

The other ogres reacted, letting out angry roars in turn, all charging at Jiang Chen with weapons raised.

Jiang Chen immediately retreated, shooting as he moved back, completely unflustered.

“Zzz—”

As the six ogres grouped up, Jiang Chen instantly changed the element of his arrows again. Arrows streaked through the air crackling with violet-white lightning.

-570!

-285!

-285!

The damage from Concussive Arrow was still considerable, making the scene pleasing to the eye.

In less than thirty seconds, all six level-20 ogres lay at Jiang Chen’s feet, granting him 1200 experience points and 14,200 copper coins—though no equipment or skill books dropped.

The NPC girl stared wide-eyed, blankly watching everything unfold.

She had thought she would die at the hands of the ogres, but unexpectedly, she was saved by an adventurer.

“No! No human is truly good…”

The next moment, hatred appeared in her eyes. She turned and disappeared into the forest behind her.

Jiang Chen had just finished cleaning up the battlefield, hoping he might trigger a hidden quest. But as soon as their eyes met, the girl simply turned and left.

Uh… what a rude NPC…

This was just a small episode along the way.

There wasn’t much to say about encountering such a rude NPC.

Jiang Chen reopened the map and continued heading into the valley. Coldflower Valley was a level 20–25 map. On the road, monsters occasionally appeared, but they weren’t enough to stop Jiang Chen’s advance.

Following the directions on the map, he soon saw a fairly large wooden house built on a flat area within the valley.

As Jiang Chen approached the door, he unexpectedly saw a familiar face—the rude NPC.

Thunk!

The NPC girl was fetching water. When she looked up and saw Jiang Chen in front of her, her expression immediately tensed. She even knocked over the water bucket.

The next second, she bolted straight into the house.

Jiang Chen stood there frozen.

Just now, he had clearly seen that under the hood of the NPC girl were two long, pointed ears. Her skin was also so smooth and snowy it was almost frightening—like finely sculpted jade.

“She’s actually an elf…” Jiang Chen rubbed his chin.

In Hope World, relations between humans and elves were anything but friendly—they were enemies at first sight.

The two races had fought for over a century over territorial disputes.

While the elves yearned for freedom, humans were greedy. Jiang Chen saw this clearly—once humans gained power, they would seek to control the world and become its ‘rulers’.

Moreover, the beauty of the elves enchanted humans. Their skin was like mutton-fat jade, and they carried an inherent air of nobility and grace. Naturally, they became the first choice to fulfill certain ‘dirty’ desires of high officials and nobles.

Thus, the hatred between the two races ran deep, like fire and water.

But why was there an elf here?

While pondering, Jiang Chen also walked toward the house.

“Master, a human has arrived.”

The elf girl’s voice came from within.

“Stop right there!”

Just as Jiang Chen was about to step inside, a clear voice stopped him. Beside the left shelf stood a tall woman in a snow-patterned gauze dress, quietly sorting herbs.

“Coldflower Valley does not welcome anyone from Yunhuang City. I advise you to leave at once!”

“She must be Han Yunmeng, right?” Jiang Chen didn’t dare use the Identification skill recklessly—it could easily be sensed and wasn’t considered a friendly act toward NPCs.

It seemed she had some grudges with Yunhuang City. Or maybe Han Yunmeng was simply like this by nature. Either way, Jiang Chen just smiled slightly at her cold attitude and didn’t take it to heart.

The elf girl beside him peeked at him out of the corner of her eye but didn’t say anything. Though she deeply disliked humans… this one had saved her. That left her feeling conflicted.

Jiang Chen remembered his mentor Jona’s words: don’t offend Han Yunmeng, or the resurrection potion matter would be over.

Taking out Jona’s letter, Jiang Chen said, “Mentor Jona asked me to deliver a letter to you. Please take a look.”

“Jona?”

Han Yunmeng finally looked at Jiang Chen. She opened the letter, and a faint smile appeared on her face. “I didn’t expect Jona to recommend you as my apprentice. Looks like she thinks quite highly of you.”

Apprentice?!

No wonder Mentor Jona had said archers were resource-consuming and that Han Yunmeng would help him—it turned out she was helping him get a secondary class.

In Hope World, players could take on secondary classes—blacksmithing, alchemy, construction, etc. If cultivated well, these could save players a lot of money.

Ordinary secondary classes could be learned from specific NPCs in the main city for a fee, with no special requirements.

But since Jona had gone out of her way to refer Jiang Chen to Han Yunmeng, she must have had her reasons.

“In Jona’s name, I can teach you,” Han Yunmeng put the letter away and looked at Jiang Chen. “But, adventurer, to receive my guidance, you must first earn my approval.”

“What do I need to do?” Jiang Chen asked.

Han Yunmeng’s beautiful eyes turned slightly. “Hmm, just in time—I’m missing a main herb for the potion I’m brewing. If you can bring me a Jade Serpent Orchid, I’ll officially accept you as my disciple.”

“Ding! Han Yunmeng is willing to take you as her disciple, but you must complete the quest [Proof]. Accept?”

The system prompt rang out.

“All right. I’ll retrieve the Jade Serpent Orchid.”

Jiang Chen had no reason to refuse.

After accepting the quest, Jiang Chen left immediately.

“Master, are you really going to take him as a disciple?”

“Of course, Arna.”

“But…”

“Sweet Arna, don’t worry. That adventurer is different. Maybe in the future, he’ll become the one who resolves the war between the elves and humans. You should try to befriend him. Haven’t you always wanted a friend?”
