Chapter 314: Will It Be Inconvenient?

Chapter 314: Chapter 314: Will It Be Inconvenient?

"How about this, you come over to my place to stay, and only then can I help you process the extract from the mushrooms. Grandma Enci has been in poor health lately, and since Enci’s dad passed away, I don’t want him to be restless even in the afterlife; I’d like to stay and take care of her for a while."

Jiang Zhe understood her feelings, "Then I’ll come over."

"It’ll be hard on you."

Jiang Zhe returned to the Xia Family’s home.

Xia Enci ran over to greet her: "Xiaozhe! My mom said she’s sorry to trouble you to stay over for a couple of days. Grandma really needs someone with her. When my dad and mom got together, everyone was against it, except for Grandma who supported them alone. My mom has always been grateful for her kindness, and now that she’s not in good health, my mom said, for the sake of my dad and her own conscience, it’s only right that she can’t leave."

Jiang Zhe nodded: "Of course. But by staying, will it be inconvenient?"

"It’s not inconvenient at all, there’s plenty of room in Grandma’s house," said Xia Enci.

Jiang Zhe followed her inside. Grandma Xia was being pushed downstairs by Jiang Xiruo to get some air, just reaching the living room.

"Auntie, Grandma Xia," Jiang Zhe greeted.

Grandma Xia’s eyes were somewhat cloudy. After Jiang Xiruo softly introduced her, Grandma Xia showed a smiling face: "You’re Enci’s sister, then stay here for a couple of days. Child, I’m not in the best of health, so I might not be able to attend to everything, please don’t be shy."

She was like many amiable elderly people in ordinary families, who make others feel close with just a few words.

Jiang Zhe nodded her head: "Thank you."

"Then Enci, you take care of Xiaozhe. In a while, everyone will come together for dinner," said Grandma Xia, her energy waning after speaking just a few words.

"I will, Grandma," Xia Enci promptly agreed.

Jiang Xiruo immediately brought her a bowl of thick congee, and Jiang Zhe could tell from the smell that it was made from high-quality snow fungus.

Plus, some other medicinal ingredients were added.

No wonder Jiang Xiruo insisted on staying to take care. It was quite a feat to be able to do this much.

After Grandma Xia finished her drink, Jiang Xiruo helped her with massages.

The warmth of those past years came from Grandma Xia, and naturally, Jiang Xiruo would repay this kindness.

By around eight in the evening, members of the Xia Family finally started coming back one after another.

The first voice Jiang Zhe heard was somewhat familiar: "How’s Grandma doing, have you all taken good care of her?"

She was speaking to a maid.

"Eldest Miss, Third Madam has been helping with the care," the maid replied.

"Aunt has worked hard," she said to Jiang Xiruo, but her tone didn’t carry much gratitude.

Jiang Zhe recognized the voice; it was Xia Mingzhu she had heard during the day.

So, she was a member of the Xia Family.

"Xiruo indeed has been tired, taking care of Mom all day long. Ah, these past few years without Xiruo, we have also been taking care of her day and night, thankfully Mom’s health was decent before, not as exhausting as what Xiruo went through," a somewhat harsh voice said.

The words clearly didn’t take the care provided by Jiang Xiruo seriously.

"Second Madam," the maid offered tea.

Xia Mingzhu sat down with the Second Madam.

"Second Aunt, Mingzhu," Jiang Xiruo greeted them.

The mother and daughter who had just come in were the Second Madam and Eldest Miss, Xia Mingzhu, of the Xia Family. They were polite with their words, but in actuality, both held little regard for Jiang Xiruo’s actions.

The Second Madam was Xia Mingzhu’s mother, her demeanor somewhat haughty, "Xiruo, it has been over a decade since you last visited, hasn’t it?"

"Previously, Mom was in good health, so I didn’t come back," replied Jiang Xiruo, who had been in hiding with Jiang Yaowang all these years, not venturing anywhere, so naturally, she couldn’t have visited Grandma Xia.

She had returned only upon learning of her serious illness.

Madam Xia Er took a sip of tea and said, "That’s true, when mother was healthy, we were here for her. Now that she’s unwell, and she still has quite a lot to her name, you ought to come back and take a look."

The implication of her words was that Jiang Xiruo was eagerly returning for the inheritance.

Even a simple person like Xia Enci understood and couldn’t help but say, "Auntie Er, isn’t that a bit too much? Should filial piety be bound by specific times and dates? My mom will come back to visit grandma whenever she wishes. My parents had a legitimate marriage, and it’s not up for evil spirits to gossip about!"

"Are you getting worked up now?" Madam Xia Er laughed, not taking Xia Enci’s words to heart, "I didn’t really say anything."

Jiang Xiruo spoke earnestly, "Ersao, mom is not in good health now, can we not speak of these unlucky things in front of her?"

Madam Xia Er realized that the elder Mrs. Xia was also present and stopped talking, lowering her head to drink her tea.

Although the elder Mrs. Xia was not in the best of health, she had managed the entire household for years and knew everything clearly; therefore, Madam Xia Er didn’t dare step out of line too much.

"What’s the fuss about?" A man in his fifties entered the room.

"Dad," Xia Mingzhu greeted.

"Nothing much. Just having a few words with Xiruo," said Madam Xia Er with a smile.

The man who entered was Xia Zhen, husband of Madam Xia Er and father of Xia Mingzhu.

Behind him followed a haughty young man, Xia Mingli.

Xia Mingli, unable to conceal his contemptuous gaze, glanced at Jiang Xiruo, seemingly too lazy to speak.

The elder Mrs. Xia spoke slowly, "Xiruo and Enci came to see me out of their filial hearts. Although Xia Fang is gone, his wife and daughter will always be members of the Xia family!"

Xia Zhen approached and said, "Mother, naturally. Enci is part of the Xia family and also my niece; this will not change."

Neither Xia Mingli nor Xia Mingzhu expressed any opinion.

Madam Xia Er was skeptical. Although the Xia family was not considered a household of great prominence, they had some reputation in Beijing.

The elder Mrs. Xia had quite a few valuable assets to her name, and she didn’t believe that this mother and daughter returned to show their filial piety without a trace of self-interest.

If they truly wanted to show filial piety, why didn’t they come back in the earlier years?

Did she think that no one could see through her little scheme?

The elder Mrs. Xia asked, "Where are Xia Tang and Xingzhi?"

"Mother, Grandma."

As they were speaking, Xia Tang and Xia Xingzhi returned, accompanied by Xia Tang’s wife and Xia Xingzhi’s mother, Madam Xia.

The three Xia brothers, Xia Tang, Xia Zhen, and Xia Fang.

Xia Fang was Xia Enci’s father and had passed away prematurely.

Xia Tang, the eldest brother, was very steady and had a son, Xia Xingzhi.

"Big brother, sister-in-law, Xingzhi," Jiang Xiruo greeted.

"You’ve worked hard, Xiruo," said Madam Xia, who had been busy these days and, knowing that Jiang Xiruo had been helping the elder Mrs. Xia with massage therapy and taking care of her, sincerely expressed her gratitude.

After all, family members would certainly be more dedicated than hired help or nurses.

Xia Xingzhi, around twenty-four or twenty-five years old, was quite delicate and reserved, with a restrained demeanor, "Third Aunt, you’ve worked hard."

"It’s what I should do. I’m also fulfilling Xia Fang’s filial duties," said Jiang Xiruo, not taking any credit.

"And who is this?" Madam Xia noticed Jiang Zhe.

Madam Xia Er and Xia Mingli also looked toward Jiang Zhe; in fact, they had seen him earlier but had not yet had the chance to ask.
