Chapter 164: Chapter 164: Timing, Advantage of Terrain, and Unity
"Sophie Smith, if President Land is looking for you, then you should go."
Eva Miller felt a sense of apprehension towards Asher Land. He seemed to have a bad temper and was very aloof. She really couldn’t understand why Sophie Smith could stay by his side for so long.
Eva Miller was afraid Asher Land might take his anger out on Sophie, so she kept urging her to go meet him. With no other choice, she complied.
Reality is cruel in the end. When would she be able to stop following his orders? She realized that the longer she stayed, the stronger her subservient nature became. She always felt like she was completely at his mercy.
When she reached the apartment, she remembered one thing—the keys to the apartment weren’t on her.
Frustrated, she kicked the door, as if venting her dissatisfaction towards Asher Land.
She contemplated another kick, but suddenly the door opened, and her foot awkwardly hung in mid-air.
Turns out Asher Land had arrived earlier than she did.
"Miss Smith, your actions are inappropriate," Asher Land smiled slightly. His woman had quite a fiery temper, it seemed. His plan to train her had completely failed. After all this time, she was still the feisty little wildcat he first met.
Sophie was a bit annoyed as well. Just because he wanted to see her, she had rushed over to cater to him. Her underlying pride was acting up again—in truth, she detested his authoritarianism.
She directly ignored him and walked inside.
She was indeed a bit tired today, so she headed to the bathroom and took a wonderful hot shower.
About half an hour later, she finally came out, but Asher Land was still sitting on the sofa reading a magazine.
"Why aren’t you asleep yet?" Sophie was a bit puzzled. He had to deal with so many things every day and yet was full of vitality. She really couldn’t understand what this man ate to sustain himself.
"I’ve been waiting for you, all clean and ready for some time now, and now you’re sending me off to bed?" He got up, his tall body approaching her. "I don’t want to at all."
"..."
Wasn’t it just last night... she wasn’t like him, having such boundless energy every night.
"Asher Land, I’m not you. I can’t be like you, every night..." She tried to word it delicately.
"Now’s the perfect time, so..."
"Perfect time?" Which eye of his saw that it was the perfect time?
"I, do, not, want." She rejected him bluntly and walked back to the bedroom, lying down on the bed to sleep peacefully.
Strangely, Asher Land didn’t force her tonight. He just quietly lay down beside her.
He didn’t know why, but having her by his side made him feel more at ease.
Sophie was tired and quickly fell asleep. Asher Land looked at her clean and delicate face, and his mind raced with thoughts.
He quietly got out of bed, afraid of waking her, and went to the living room, where he lit a cigar.
Smoke swirled around, adding a touch of desolation to his face.
He had always been very controlling, but now he was filled with uncertainty. What exactly was Sophie Smith’s place in his life?
"Sister Sophie is a good person. If you don’t love her, don’t toy with her. If you love her, then let her go. There’s no possibility of you being together."
This was what Irene Morton said to him today.
Even she had analyzed their relationship so accurately, so why couldn’t he see it?
Or is it that he simply didn’t want to face these truths?
