Chapter 92: TURN OF EVENTS

As soon as the plant fell down, Terrence and the rest of the team looked at each other. The heavy sound of breathing surfaced after a while. They could feel their chest going up and down, catching their breath.

"Secure the perimeter and check the area," Fredrick instructed.

The backup team quickly nodded their heads. They readied their guns and marched at the same time. They moved swiftly as if they hadn’t been in a tough battle.

"I’m already tired," Rey exhaustedly uttered. His body immediately fell, lying on the cold ground.

Sweat was running down his forehead. It was the same with Yuki and the others.

Terrence and Natalie slowly walked towards the team. They were tired, and their arms felt like they were about to fall.

Even Terrence, with great strength, felt as if sleeping out of tiredness. However, compared to the others, he wasn’t that tired.

Terrence sighed deeply. His gaze went over the team. Their worn-out faces reflected the intensity of the battle that had just finished.

Take a moment to catch your breath," Terrence said, his voice carrying a mix of fatigue and reassurance. "We did well, but we need to make sure it’s safe already."

Natalie nodded in agreement, her eyes conveying a mixture of weariness and determination. She moved towards Rey and the others, checking on their condition.

"Are you two, okay?" Fredrick asked Terrence and Natalie worriedly as they gathered on the side.

Bruises, cuts, and dirt could be seen on their bodies and clothes.

Fighting the plant took a toll on their emotional and mental health.

"Yup. How about you?" Terrence asked back.

Fredrick smiled despite the tiredness. "I’m fine that all of us are safe." He genuinely answered.

*Tshhhhh

All of their eyes went to the side when a familiar sound resonated. Their eyes widened as they watched what was happening.

The plant that was once humungous shrunk down slowly. Its eyes and teeth slowly disappeared. It was as if nothing happened.

"Huh?"

"Am I seeing correctly?"

Multiple reactions were heard as they looked at one another.

It was as if there was magic in front of them.

The team’s weariness seemed to disappear momentarily as they witnessed the inexplicable sight unfolding.

The initial shock caused silence among them as they exchanged glances. A mix of confusion and disbelief etched on their exhausted faces.

The transformation appeared almost surreal, defying all logic and reason.

Terrence and Natalie stood in disbelief.

"W-What... what is happening?" Natalie stuttered. Her voice tinged with fear.

Fredrick’s expression mirrored the collective bewilderment. "I don’t... I can’t explain this," he admitted, his voice filled with a mixture of surprise and uncertainty.

Recovering from exhaustion, Rey slowly rose to his feet, his gaze fixed on the inexplicable scene unfolding before them. "This... this doesn’t make any sense," he muttered, shaking his head in disbelief.

Fredrick’s voice broke the stunned silence. "We need to report this. Whatever just happened... it needs investigation."

"Fredrick. I suggest we go now while the rest are surveying the area. The kids seemed to be tired." Rey, who noticed Terrence’s and Natalie’s silence, uttered.

Fredrick nodded. "Let’s get back to the camp and let them handle this first."

Though visibly tired, the team members gathered their remaining energy, making their way cautiously through the forest and back to the camp.

The forest, once filled with tension and chaos, now held an eerie silence broken only by the occasional rustle of the wind.

With each passing moment, the forest began to regain its sense of peace, the danger seemingly eradicated. Yet, the team remained on high alert.

Terrence took a moment to gather his thoughts.

He slowed his pace and let them go first as they arrived at the camp.

[Ding! You have escaped danger.]

[You have been rewarded with $1000]

Despite the reward he gained, Terrence stared at the air blankly.

’What’s happening?’

He asked the system. He couldn’t understand anything that was happening.

[Ding! The current happening is because of virus TDZ.]

’What is that?’

[A virus will soon spread on this planet. To ensure that the host will survive this, the system set the following Mission.]

[Ding!]

[Special Mission 1: Find out more about the virus!]

[Special Mission 2: Survive the Apocalypse!]

[Rewards/s: 1000 exp and $1,000,000]

Terrence’s eyes widened. His jaw fell to the ground. It was as if the shock that he felt earlier still wasn’t enough.

Terrence stood there, stunned by the revelation. The words displayed by the system felt surreal.

He thought in this life, he would be able to live it to the fullest. He thought that the system was there to help him around.

But the events suddenly took turns 180 degrees.

Natalie, noticing his perplexed expression, approached him with concern etched on her face. "Terrence, what’s wrong?"

Terrence hesitated, trying to process the inexplicable situation. "I... I think something strange will be happening.

"What are you talking about?" Natalie’s forehead creased.

She looked at Terrence, weirded out.

"It’s nothing." He answered and smiled at Natalie.

"I was just processing everything that happened."

Natalie nodded. She smiled. "Go rest first. The others are resting already."

"I will," Terrence smiled at Natalie reassuringly.

Terrence felt a surge of unease as the implications of the system’s message sank into his mind. His mind raced with questions.

As the team settled in the camp, Terrence found a moment alone, away from prying eyes and curious ears. He hesitantly accessed the system, seeking more information, hoping to uncover clues that might explain this turn of events.

However, the system won’t reveal anything to him.

Terrence tirelessly laid down on the bed. He took a deep breath. His brain was now aching from too much thinking.

"F*ck this." Terrence cursed out loud.

Terrence closed his eyes. Minutes hadn’t even passed before his consciousness drifted away.

As Terrence stirred from his deep slumber, he was gently nudged awake by Natalie. His eyes blinked open, adjusting to the faint light filtering through the tent’s fabric.

"Terrence, we’ll be leaving in an hour." Natalie’s concerned gaze met Terrence as she woke him up.

"I will go out in just a minute," Terrence answered.

"Take your time," Natalie whispered softly, understanding his need to wake himself thoroughly first.

She quietly exited the tent, leaving Terrence to collect his thoughts since he had just woken up.

Alone in his tent, Terrence lay still for a while, allowing his brain to process what had happened first fully. His mind felt clearer now after being awake.

It seemed like being asleep helped him clear his thoughts.

He knew he couldn’t let the message from the system distract him entirely. Since he knew that it was true, he needed to look for ways now on how he could learn more about it.

He did not want it to be like in his past life, where the HNT virus had caused massive destruction in their lives.

Terrence knew he needed to prevent that. If he can’t, then at least minimize its impact. Amidst the chaos of the situation, one thing remained clear in his mind — his family’s safety.

With a determined resolve, Terrence sat up, his thoughts aligning with a sense of purpose. He steadied his breathing, contemplating the tasks ahead.

"First things first," he muttered to himself with a newfound determination in his voice. "I need to ensure my family’s safety. That comes first, before anything else."

As the team prepared to depart from the forest, a bittersweet atmosphere settled among them. Each member meticulously readied themselves for the journey ahead, packing their belongings with a mix of determination and uncertainty.

When Terrence left his tent, he saw that the other team members were already slowly removing and folding their tents.

When Fredrick saw that Terrence was now outside, he gathered everyone around. He stood in the middle.

With his voice filled with gratitude and solemnity, he stated, "It’s time for us to part ways. We’ve been through a lot together, and I couldn’t have asked for a better team. A special thanks for Terrence and Natalie for being part of this."

With a bittersweet smile on his face, Fredrick looked at everyone. Even if it was just a short period of time that they’d been together, he knew more about the people around him.

He was incredibly thankful to Terrence and Natalie as they were the ones who found out about the Plant’s weakness earlier. They also helped distract the plant, which made their attack easier.

Fredrick’s eyes glanced at Terrence. His lips curved to a grin. He somehow felt that Terrence was meant for this project.

The team that took this case was a mixture of veterans and newly ordained police officers, Yuki being one of them.

Rey, who was the second oldest of the group, stepped forward. Rey’s expression was a blend of exhaustion and camaraderie.

"Stay safe, everyone. It’s been quite an adventure. I hope you stay safe as you go to your house. Tomorrow, we will see each other again at the office."
