Chapter 1343: Chapter 1269: Case Closed
"Sit down, don’t move. We’re going to unlock your handcuffs now, then cuff you to the chair. If you try anything funny, we’ll use electric shocks and other means. Don’t make things difficult for yourself," the Dama police officer said as he shoved Li Haochen into the chair.
Li Haochen then felt the restraints on his wrists released, and his hands were pulled to the sides and re-cuffed before the hood on his head was removed.
Glancing around, Li Haochen saw Cai Dachui and his gang members with their backs to him. Each of them was accompanied by a Dama special officer, without guns, but equipped with non-lethal weapons like stun batons and pepper spray.
That was already surprising enough, but what truly astonished Li Haochen was that the Dama Police Force had actually provided them with an official aircraft.
Although he had anticipated it during the journey, the luxurious arrangement still shocked Li Haochen.
Despite being with the ministry, he usually traveled second class on business trips. He had ridden on official planes before, but only as a hitchhiker.
Yet here he was, seeing the Dama Police Force using an official aircraft just to transport a few criminals—thanks to Jiang Yuan’s widespread reputation.
After settling Li Haochen, the Dama police focused on handling Cai Dachui.
Similar to before, the three officers didn’t remove Cai Dachui’s hood, instead holding an electric shock gun, they said, "Ringleader Cai Dachui, we’re now preparing to unlock your handcuffs..."
Cai Dachui, dazed and confused, murmured, "I’m not the ringleader!"
The special officers weren’t listening at all. Two linked the handcuffs and shackles to the chair while another two kept their guns trained on him.
Watching Cai Dachui’s pitiful state, Li Haochen couldn’t help but think to himself, "If I were Cai Dachui... even if I were Cai Dachui, beyond pleading innocence, there doesn’t seem to be much I can do!"
Up front, Cai Dachui likely shared similar thoughts, trying to speak up amidst the crowd, "You’ve got the wrong person. If you accused me of minor issues, I’d admit them, but I can’t take the blame for being the ringleader. Isn’t this a case of killing the innocent to claim glory? ...You guys are foreigners who don’t understand; you can’t falsely accuse good people..."
"Gag him," said the special officer who had just finished putting on the foot chains, standing up and speaking in Malay.
Cai Dachui, having spent several years in Dama, understood what was said, though the wording was a bit unusual and took a moment to grasp.
Thankfully, he had purchased and used this item before... so... this was no good at all.
Cai Dachui caught on.
Cai Dachui began to panic!
Cai Dachui was gagged.
"Mmh mmh..." Cai Dachui barely managed a couple of pitiful sounds, so harrowing that Li Haochen had to turn his head away in empathy.
The rest of the journey was silent.
It wasn’t until Cai Dachui was locked into the interrogation chair at the Tianjin Customs Investigation Bureau that he regained the ability to speak.
Meng Chengbiao conducted the interrogation.
Jiang Yuan and others watched via surveillance video.
Compared to one-way mirrors, the surveillance video lacked a bit of grandeur and immersion.
However, the swift progress of the interrogation below compensated for that.
As Meng Chengbiao delved into the details of the case, having already forced Cai Dachui to admit several minor issues, Cai Dachui suddenly realized why he had been brought in.
"You should know yourself who was with you when the murder happened. We’re asking you now as a chance for you; otherwise, the eyewitness testimony alone is already sufficient evidence," Meng Chengbiao moved cautiously but deployed lethal questions as soon as he touched on key issues.
Cai Dachui sighed heavily, "I only killed my own people, is it necessary?... Is it necessary?"
His counter-question genuinely stumped Meng Chengbiao.
Essentially, he felt that handling this case was somewhat arduous; many others in his position might have chosen not to pursue it.
After all, without a complainant, and with the victim and perpetrator both likely being smugglers, investigating such internal murders is difficult, and not pursuing it would be the least pressure-inducing option.
However, Jiang Yuan’s approach was always straightforward; smugglers or drug dealers made no difference to him.
Meng Chengbiao then emulated the virtuous characters on TV, slowly shaking his head, "It’s necessary. Murder is a grave crime, and when you commit murder, you naturally have to face the consequences."
Cai Dachui was taken aback, then started laughing wildly, laughing so hard he leaned back and forth, causing the interrogation chair to creak.
The officer standing to the side made a move forward but was stopped by Meng Chengbiao.
In his view, a suspect post-emotional outburst is the most useful, more likely to open up honestly compared to regular people who can’t endure the interrogation and provide excessive redundant information.
The laughter subsided.
Cai Dachui looked directly at Meng Chengbiao, asking, "Who betrayed me?"
Meng Chengbiao smiled without speaking, giving the impression he wouldn’t leak any information.
"Old Jin?" Cai Dachui voiced the name he had long suspected.
Meng Chengbiao neither confirmed nor denied.
Cai Dachui frowned, "Where did I slip up? If you won’t tell me, then I won’t say anything either; let’s see if your Great Recovery Technique is impressive or if I cause trouble by retracting my confession on the spot."
Seeing this, Meng Chengbiao relented a bit, "Alright, how about I tell you the reason, and you narrate the crime process?"
"Deal!" Cai Dachui, upon hearing the word "ringleader," had already realized he was doomed. Moreover, flying back on an official aircraft left him with no hope for the future, but he wanted to die understanding.
Meng Chengbiao coughed twice, glanced at the camera, waited a moment, and then said, "The initial clue was the blood of the victim found in a Land Cruiser..."
In just a few words, he had outlined the main points of the situation.
Cai Dachui listened, astonished, "If I knew... If I knew, I should have pushed that car into the sea!"
Meng Chengbiao chuckled, "So, are you admitting to the murder?"
"I admit it, what’s there not to admit," Cai Dachui said, disdainfully adding, "I killed my own, what does it have to do with you? You guys are truly meddlesome, wasting time and effort. Some scum deserved to die. Do you know why I killed him?"
"Why did you kill him?" Determining the motive for murder is also a very crucial part of the interrogation.
"Because he was cooking the books!" Cai Dachui laughed, "Isn’t it ridiculous? Cooking the books should get you arrested. He was messing around when I asked him for money, so I just shot him. Having already lost so much money, I couldn’t afford to lose a Land Cruiser too."
Meng Chengbiao: "Got any evidence?"
Cai Dachui laughed at the question, "You’re asking me for evidence? You expect me to give you accounting records?"
"If you don’t give me the records, who benefits the most?" Meng Chengbiao countered.
Cai Dachui fell silent once again.
Soon, Cai Dachui spoke again, "If I turn someone over, does it count as meritorious service?"
This time, it was Meng Chengbiao’s turn to laugh.
Achievements are indeed achievements, but if the ones brought in turn around and achieve meritorious service against Meng Chengbiao, it becomes a closed loop again.
In the control room.
Jiang Yuan got up and said to Wan Quan, who was standing beside him, "This case should be about wrapped up. I’ll have Commissioner Huang contact you and Wu Zhi later."
Strictly speaking, this case belonged to Wu Zhisu from the Jianjiang Criminal Police Brigade, but Jiang Yuan didn’t need to worry much about that. Huang Qiangmin had been scribbling and sketching these past couple of days, likely having planned some things out long ago.
