Chapter 996: Chapter 360: Farewell Dreyne_3
Anastasia dissolved her thoughts, and the Magic Mecha Doll collapsed, its parts scattering everywhere.
Wayne felt a pang in his heart, deeply unsettled, seeing William and Philomena both somewhat disheartened, he cracked a couple of Hell jokes with a big grin.
Anyway, a trip to Highway 114 was in order, as long as the Cushin couple was still around, William would surely pull himself together.
Three shadows moved along the highway, against a backdrop of billowing smoke from the apocalyptic wasteland.
This world had no future.
————
Highway 114.
Wayne jumped up and draped his arm over William’s shoulder, the two of them going back and forth, exchanging their proudest Hell jokes.
At first glance, William seemed to have perked up.
But he hadn’t.
He knew Wayne was worried about him and was hiding his grief, greeting him only with a smile.
Wayne saw right through it but didn’t say anything; the two of them walked arm in arm, Philomena feeling left out, joined into the atmosphere, grabbing one of Wayne’s arms, much to William’s annoyance, starting a verbal sparring match with her.
The scene was harmonious to the extreme.
"This is the place, the space fluctuations are still here, it wasn’t a wasted trip."
Wayne caught the spatial fluctuations from the Misty Sea, like a fish out of water coming ashore, breathing fresh air, the heart that had been hanging finally found a reprieve.
The Inverted World was too oppressive, the emotions he brought into the Outer World almost made him break down crying several times.
He didn’t want to see any more tragedy, if he could help William find his parents, it would ease his mind a lot.
"Wayne, what are we doing here?"
William leaned in and asked, faintly sensing the odd spatial fluctuations around him. There was a space channel nearby, but he couldn’t accurately capture its entry point, and thus, couldn’t enter.
"Back when I was treasure hunting in the Outer World, I found a big surprise here. I wanted to see if the treasure of the Inverted World is still here, it would be twice as happy!" Wayne explained.
"Typical of you, always so thrifty and economical." William nodded repeatedly, feeling that Wayne was hiding something but didn’t call him out on it.
"Of course, I hate wasting things, I always clean up every grain of rice in my bowl."
Wayne put his hand on his hip, halfway through he felt something was off, this seemed to be a line from a villain.
Which villain it was, he couldn’t remember at the moment, so he just let it go, maybe he’d remember someday.
He borrowed William’s Dawn Admonition, stabbed it into the crevice of the space fluctuation, hissed as he levered it upwards, pulling back the veil of space to reveal the highway behind.
"Let’s go; the treasure is ahead, and everyone will get a share."
The three arrived at the highway where the Misty Sea used to be—now only the highway remained, without the mist. Wayne’s heart fell halfway, praying that the Cushin couple was still there and had not disappeared along with Torgoguryr’s head.
He prayed devoutly, hugging each of the five Goddesses’ thighs in turn.
An eleventh-hour Buddha’s feet embrace, not swift but still bright.
The three walked briskly, Wayne following his memory through the tunnel, arriving at a low building, scanning with his mind, not spotting an ugly dependent.
Every room was covered with a layer of dust; there had been no signs of life here for two years.
Wayne felt sick to his stomach but also relieved. Thankfully, he hadn’t boasted anything to William; otherwise, it would have been a secondary injury. Seeing William’s forced smile, he probably wouldn’t have been able to hold himself together.
Wayne looked into the distance; the Black Mountain Range was still there, continuing their journey hopefully, in the direction of the Golden City.
Cushin had been corrupted into a dependent, Carter had not; she was protected by the Knight’s Medal and had fallen into a lone slumber.
Wayne hugged each of the five Goddesses’ thighs again, Cushin was corrupted, part of Torgoguryr, irreproducible by the mirror, his disappearance was understandable, but Carter had not been, there was a great chance she still existed.
"Goddess above, please let her be there!" Wayne murmured softly.
"Wayne, as a free knight like you, which Goddess do you pray to?" William asked curiously.
"Whoever hears it, that’s who; that’s the beauty of omitting the subject."
"Is that also honed from experience on the battleground of love?"
"Yep."
Oh, how smug you are! x2
Wayne quickened his pace and within less than ten minutes arrived at the base of the Black Mountain Range. He found neither Golden City nor the golden coffin protected by the Knight’s Medal.
Wayne felt a cold chill, he sighed where he stood; if it weren’t for his lack of power, he would have loved to punch through this world.
Just as he was lifting his hand to rub his face, a figure cloaked in a silvery white robe stepped across from the mountain peaks of the Black Mountain Range, breaking through space with leaps spanning hundreds of meters.
Where she passed, pulled along a silvery white chain, a magnificent sight to behold.
William clenched the Dawn Admonition, entering combat mode, while Philomena put herself in front of Wayne and drew her sword-gun, ready for battle.
"It’s fine, I know her, she’s one of us."
"Wayne, it really is you!"
The silver robe landed, the hood pulled back to reveal a face full of astonished delight; who else could it be but the Moonlight Knight, Dreyne.
The moment the three arrived at the base of the mountain, Dreyne had spotted them. Seeing Wayne’s familiar face, she was both shocked and overjoyed, coming over in person to confirm, indeed she hadn’t mistaken it.
She stepped forward, giving Wayne a hearty pat on the shoulder: "Let’s go, follow me up the mountain for a card game."
"Sister, I didn’t come to the Inverted World to play cards with you, and aren’t you curious how I got here and what I’m doing?"
"The Goddess heard my prayers and threw you here to accompany me in a card game," Dreyne argued boldly.
"..."
Wayne rolled his eyes, finding Dreyne here was an unexpected pleasure, having a guide meant he didn’t have to worry about the way back.
