Chapter 833: Chapter 318: The Good Days Are Still Ahead!_4
Additionally, critical experimental equipment and research material were all individually sealed and stored.
Frank’s research into Hell was extremely dangerous, and Borne’s research on the flesh of the Star Beast was not to be underestimated either. Any slight negligence could lead to unimaginable consequences.
Wayne glanced over and immediately let out a soft exclamation.
Dreyne’s smile was mischievous as he grew more pleased with Wayne; having an heir by his side made it less dull, even without playing cards.
Ivette’s face turned ashen as she sniffed the air for the smell of a rat. A gleam flashed in her eyes, and her thoughts of Legendary Mage caliber pierced into the Void, weaving an invisible net, quickly trapping the little rat in a corner.
It was a nearly transparent figure that solidified from the Void, overwhelmed in a battle of wits with Ivette and revealing its true form.
Borne.
A Legendary Mage from the Magic Department, former head of the Void Lifeform Research Team.
"Borne, what are you doing here?" Ivette asked sharply.
"I am here, here..."
Borne, caught red-handed in a nighttime raid of the Magic Department, was immensely flustered and trying to concoct a good excuse, when he suddenly realized something was amiss.
"Who are you, a new Legendary Mage at the Magic Department? Why haven’t I seen you before?" Borne was extremely puzzled. Legendary Mages aren’t as common as potatoes.
"I am Iv..."
Ivette stopped mid-sentence, pressing down her slightly embarrassed skirt.
Under the ruthless illumination of the wall lamp, her black-clad legs intertwined, she felt mortified and quickly pulled on a long robe over her body.
"Ivette?!"
Borne’s eyes widened incredulously, "You’re Vice Minister Ivette Collins? Really? Is that you?"
Enough already, no one is mistaking you for a mute!
Ivette was beside herself with shame, about to rebuke the thief with a cold face.
"Wow, it really is you!"
Borne’s expression turned bizarre, then he burst into uncontrollable laughter, tapping the shelf next to him, "I know why you look younger, chilling, very damn chilling. Just now, you weren’t wearing your magic robe, I almost didn’t recognize you."
Borne laughed until he was nearly in tears. Ivette trembled with anger, eyes blazing, as she raised her hand with fingers spread, "Borne, this is Vice Minister Wayne’s office building. You’ve been dismissed and are under review. You bear the mark of guilt, and you weren’t invited here. Do you have anything to explain to the Queen?"
"Explain it to Austin," Borne muttered under his breath.
Ivette got even angrier and raised her hand to unleash the Life Force Field and capture the thief.
"Wait, I have a compelling reason to be here!"
Borne hurriedly interrupted, pointing to the full warehouse of preserved materials, his eyes brimming with tears, "This is all my hard work. I have put in many years without recognition, but with hardship. Just because I was controlled by a Devil, doesn’t mean I should be removed. Does Vice Minister Wayne even understand what Void Lifeform is? Decades of success can’t be destroyed on his whim."
Borne’s words were somewhat incoherent. Wayne had once helped Philomena rid herself of the Corruption from Star Beast flesh; he was one of those in the know. This way, either the Legendary Mage’s hysteria was acting up, or he was speaking directly to Wayne.
"Shut up, this is arranged by the Minister and Vice Minister Austin, and your antics won’t be tolerated!" Ivette didn’t care, shielding Wayne behind her, ready to capture the big rat.
"Just one more moment, I have something to say to Vice Minister Wayne."
Regardless of whether Ivette agreed, Borne quickly said to Wayne, "Vice Minister, I am the foremost expert on the Star Beast in Windsor, the best researcher you could have. Your project can’t go on without me. Give me a chance; this time, I just want to focus on research."
"Offering you a chance isn’t out of the question, but from what I know, you were controlled by a Devil just by one encounter. If there’s a next time, won’t all the research results be stolen by the Devil?"
Wayne shook his head repeatedly, troubled, "It’s not that I don’t trust you, it’s just that you have too many priors, making it hard for anyone to trust you."
"That wasn’t just any ordinary Devil. It took a God-chosen Knight to defeat it. Being controlled by it isn’t shameful for me; I was just unlucky. If it were Ivette, she’d have been controlled too."
Borne complained incessantly, claiming it wasn’t his fault and lamented his unlucky fate.
At this, he added, "Vice Minister Wayne, do you remember Plank? He once treated you to a meal. I’m good friends with Plank. For his sake, please give me another chance."
"Oh, well..."
Indeed, Wayne had contemplated collaborating with Borne on some research. The latter was a top researcher from the Void, and not exploiting his capabilities would be a disservice to Windsor’s ruthless excellence.
"Magic Mage Borne, originally it wasn’t possible since you have a criminal record and were even involved in a rebellion. But I can’t ignore Plank’s influence."
Wayne appeared troubled and pondered for a while before saying, "My father, Austin, and the Queen are different; he values talent. Alright, I’ll give you a chance to prove yourself..."
Wayne gestured towards himself and Ivette, Dreyne, "You claim that anyone would be the same facing a Devil, so I won’t make it difficult for you. Choose an opponent, win against her, and you’ll have thirty seconds to prove your strength."
Her?
Borne immediately understood, secretly thinking Plank’s influence really did work wonders, as Wayne was already providing him a way out.
In Borne’s view, Wayne was too mysterious and held many secrets, and given his high status now, he wasn’t an ideal choice for combat.
Winning against the Prince would bring no benefits and would only guarantee problems later. Losing would completely shut down any opportunity with the research team. Either way, no benefits, better to pass directly.
Borne didn’t mention it aloud, but he speculated about Wayne’s strength, which Plank had hinted was extremely formidable, likely beyond that of a usual Legendary Mage.
Whether Plank was boasting was debatable, as he often praised Wayne’s talents. Borne knew with all that hype, there must be something noteworthy about Wayne, making it hard to defeat him within thirty seconds.
Ivette won’t work either; can’t win against her, let alone in thirty seconds.
So, it was clear whom Wayne was indirectly suggesting.
White hair, it’s decided then, it’s you!
Borne raised an eyebrow, feeling confident in his plan, his hands remained steady.
Ivette stepped in front of Wayne, frowning and coldly said, "Borne, calm down. I advise you not to do anything foolish. It’s best just to admit defeat."
That probably wouldn’t work. The new leadership was watching; he needed to make a good impression, otherwise he wouldn’t dare speak up in the future.
Under Ivette’s silent gaze, Borne provocatively challenged Dreyne, loudly asking, "New guy, who are you?"
"The Vice Minister’s secretary."
Dreyne nervously responded, "I’m, I’m not a Legendary Mage..."
"Less talk, you’re the one— I’ll take you down in thirty seconds!"
Borne waved his hand grandly, keeping Ivette from interfering, and enveloped Dreyne with a Life Force Field.
Can’t beat Ivette, can’t handle Wayne, but can I not handle you, the secretary?
Ridiculous, won’t even need thirty seconds!
