Chapter 787: Chapter 307: The Ancestral Laws Are Unchangeable - Part 2
Douglas thought the Queen’s methods were too soft; if it had been up to him, he would have physically reshuffled the deck, reorganizing the Tulip Family to ensure their loyalty at all times.
But he wasn’t the King and had no co-sovereign rights, so his words didn’t count.
In the plan targeting the Tulip Family, after careful consideration, Douglas placed the challenging Lando Family last. At the banquet two days later, he planned to show Austin what a God-chosen Knight truly was.
This was a sure win!
"It’s just a pity that the Dark Church’s Holy Maiden didn’t find the Dark Knight; otherwise, having two God-chosen present would have truly secured our position," Douglas mused, leaning against the back seat of the limousine.
He pondered that the absence of the Dark Knight had its downsides and upsides.
From Queen Sophia’s perspective, with only a Death Knight present, it wasn’t enough to exert the greatest pressure on the Life Alliance and the Heavenly Father’s Court. The Royal Family would have to take the field themselves.
From Douglas’s viewpoint, the Royal Family taking the field saved him the trouble of coaxing the Queen into trying Divine Blood evolution.
As he mused, the convoy of black luxury cars plunged into darkness. The wheels turned, yet the vehicle remained stationary.
The driver noticed nothing out of the ordinary and neither did Douglas, even when a figure opened the car door and sat beside him, all without any sign of awareness.
The newcomer wore a black suit, a white-collar, a black tie, and polished leather shoes that gleamed. Clean white gloves adorned his hands, which bore an expensive watch on the wrist.
The mysterious person who controlled Hell’s Familiars and wielded The Book of Hell, the invader of Lando Manor.
He appeared once more after many days.
"Prince Douglas, the scent of your desire grows ever stronger," the mysterious man praised. "Your soul is wonderful, destined to fall into Hell. On behalf of the great Lord Pride, I welcome you."
While speaking, the mysterious man took out The Book of Hell, brushed his hand over the cover, and murmured in a chant that seemed both a curse and a self-praise of his grand belief.
A cloud of dark mist rose from the cover of The Book of Hell, transforming mid-air into a pallid face.
The face was sickly pale and chilling with purple-black veins coursing underneath like a web, the lips bright red and sinister. The upper half of the face was covered with a keratinous mask, featuring six slanted eyes in symmetrical pairs.
The quintessential dark aesthetic of Hell.
The mysterious man cast a spell, infusing the visage conjured from the dark mist into Douglas’s body without his realization, while Douglas continued to plot his grand ambitions.
As desire amplified further, Douglas’s plans against Queen Sophia took clearer shape, not just towards his wife, but also his children with Divine Blood, and himself.
A Prince who didn’t aspire to be King wasn’t a good son-in-law!
Imagining all the possibilities, Douglas suddenly shuddered and snapped to clarity, turning to the mysterious man with a frown. "Frank, what brings you here? Has the Queen arranged something?"
"My research has made new breakthroughs and I wish to present a celebration gift to the Queen at the banquet. But the Queen is too soft-hearted; she still pities the Tulip Family..."
Windsor’s Hell Study Expert, the sole heir of the Turner Family, the Hikikomori Researcher, the mysterious Frank spoke like a devil whispering into Douglas’s ear. "You know, the Queen’s soft-heartedness isn’t because of the Tulip Family, but because of a man named Austin Lando."
"Austin was the Queen’s lover, once deeply in love, and he greatly influenced the Queen’s ruling concepts..."
"Why has the Queen been so indifferent to you, allowing you to leave Lundan, and for so many years at that?"
"Prince Douglas, you know the answer. The Queen still can’t forget Austin. Your marriage was only political, the affection all a facade..."
Any man would have a hard time hearing these words, let alone Douglas, who had lost his reason. He found the devil’s words convincing and his resentment towards Austin peaked in an instant.
"Go, and teach Austin a lesson at the banquet in two days. Defeat him and prove to your wife that you’re not just a replacement for Austin, you’re better than him," Frank whispered until Douglas stopped, his face twisted.
"But, as far as I know, Austin harbors a secret, and with your current power, it would be very hard to beat him."
"I still have the Death Knight!"
Douglas, his forehead covered in sweat as if enduring some pain, spoke in a deep voice.
"That’s the Queen’s ally and has nothing to do with you. Moreover, the Queen herself doesn’t trust external forces. What’s left for you?"
"Cheap trust is worthless, Prince Douglas. You can only rely on yourself."
"..."
Douglas was plunged into confusion.
Frank smiled faintly, caressing The Book of Hell: "Remember, my research has made tremendous strides. You could use it to defeat Austin, but it would require evolved Divine Blood. Do you know what to do?"
"Sophia..."
Douglas furrowed his brows, his forehead emitting dark mist, his features barely human in their ferocity.
"See, you love her so, yet she’s cold and heartless towards you. Don’t you understand yet that all you care about is power? All these years of restraint were for the pinnacle of power."
Seeing Douglas struggling, Frank calmly dropped the final bombshell: "Oh, I forgot to mention, according to my investigation, Prince Edward and Princess Elizabeth’s biological father isn’t you..."
