Chapter 764: 301
Bancer expressed skepticism toward Wayne’s words, not believing that the pure and untainted Queen and Austin still held lingering affections; after all...
He knew, the Prince Douglas was rumored to have not died, and was still alive.
"Old man, no, Bancer, today I come as a representative of the good intentions of the Lando Family. Austin asked me to take good care of you all. He mentioned that when poor relatives from outside come to the main family to beg, I didn’t believe it at first, but now..."
Wayne glanced over the crowd, slightly lifted his chin, "Indeed, it’s somewhat shabby. Just by your clothing and appearance, you’ve made the word ’nobility’ commonplace."
"..."
No one from Bancer’s family made a sound, many of them, especially the third generation, had made quite a few laughable mistakes upon their first arrival in the great city of Lundan.
Having dressed up for the evening, they had indeed spent a significant portion of their savings, thinking it would be grand enough, but faced with Wayne’s critique, they suddenly felt unconfident.
Could I have really brought shame to the nobility?
Bancer felt despondent; comparing his family to Austin’s, it was true that Austin had a formidable son: "Wayne, you’ve gone too far, after all, I am your..."
"We’re all nobles, no need to play the emotional card, talking about emotions costs money, I can afford it, can you?"
Wayne cut him off, then turned to the server standing dumbstruck on the side, "Serve the dishes, the bill for tonight is on me. I don’t want the best, I only want the most expensive."
The manager nodded repeatedly; although Wayne was rather arrogant and particularly annoying, this was Lundan, and money was king.
If he were the heir of the Lando Family with a father who could enter the Queen’s favor with billions, he would surely be more arrogant than Wayne.
The situation had reversed; now it was Wayne hosting Bancer’s family.
It didn’t matter; the money was well spent. Seeing the conflicted expressions on Bancer’s family’s faces, wanting to eat but also minding their dignity, Wayne smiled without a word.
"Kehkehkehkeh——"
Mona stood behind Wayne throughout the event, acting as bodyguard, secretary, lover, server—each time Wayne showed his domineering side, her eyes would flash with an air of inevitability.
Faith makes one steadfast, religion makes one ignorant!
Bancer tasted the authentic French meal, it was as tasteless as wax; the remarks he had prepared were now useless.
He claimed to have the Queen’s backing; Wayne retorted that Austin had slept with the Queen. Wayne dared to say what he didn’t; what was there left to discuss.
Fortunately, it wasn’t a big problem, the place was filled with his people, and Wayne was taking a risk by coming alone with just a secretary...
Secretary?
Recalling the secretary, Bancer suddenly remembered, according to intelligence kindly sponsored by the Royal Family’s secret agents, Austin’s secretary was quite capable. Could Wayne’s secretary also be skilled?
Still no big problem, with so many eyes watching, Wayne surely wouldn’t dare to hit him.
Being hit would be for the best, then he could make a big profit from lying down.
Pondering over this, Bancer felt a wave of melancholy; both bearing the Lando name, Austin and his son Wayne just had to sell their conscience to make money, while he had to sell his dignity.
As a noble, he was a true failure.
"Mr. Bancer, are you Mr. Bancer?"
A strange voice broke into Bancer’s ears. He looked up in a puzzled manner at the uninvited man and stood up instinctively, "I am Bancer Lando, I apologize for not having been active in Lundan for many years, who might you be?"
"It is indeed you, have you forgotten? I am John, Priest of the Moonlight Church. We had drinks together at that banquet," the man named John stepped forward enthusiastically, seizing Bancer’s hand with an air of old friends reuniting.
Had they?
Bancer wasn’t quite sure, but it didn’t stop him from pretending to suddenly remember, and quickly engaged in conversation with his old friend about that year’s banquet.
As Bancer reminisced about the past, he quickly understood why John had come—if his guess was right, the Queen had arranged for support from The Church to put pressure on Austin.
Lately, the Moonlight Church had a significant presence in Lundan and was in a honeymoon phase with the Royal Family. Should the Queen request, the Moonlight Church would not mind sending a Priest to support them.
It all made sense and wasn’t problematic.
"Hahahaha———"
Bancer laughed heartily, and the image of his old friend John suddenly became clear.
Indeed, we did have drinks together back then!
As Bancer chatted, he watched Wayne out of the corner of his eye, who was eating silently without speaking, and his smile grew wider.
Gradually, laughter and cheerful conversations from Bancer’s family became more frequent.
"What a noisy mess, have you no manners? Where are your dining etiquette, left back in the countryside?" Wayne complained as he set down his cutlery and received a napkin from Mona, wiping his mouth with great poise.
"Sorry, I haven’t seen John for many years, and I got too excited, disturbing your meal," Bancer replied.
The skies had cleared, the rain stopped, and Bancer felt back on his feet, with his tone becoming much more humble.
Humility often signifies confidence, and the more outstanding a person is, the greater their respect for others. Conversely, belittling others is often the insecure person’s way of seeking a sense of superiority.
In comparison, Bancer felt he had the upper hand.
"Bancer, sorry for interrupting your meal with your friend. This is a high-class restaurant, and I was rude just now," John attempted to smooth things over.
"No worries, we’re all family here. Let me introduce you, these are my family members..."
After Bancer finished the introductions, it came to Wayne: "This is Wayne Lando, a Lundan noble, somewhat of a junior to me."
"Wayne Lando, I seem to have heard this name somewhere..."
John frowned and pondered for a moment, then shook his head, "Nevermind that now. Bancer, I didn’t come to eat, we’ll get in touch some other time."
"Come to the restaurant but not to eat?"
"Yes, this restaurant’s French cuisine is very authentic, all prepared by Lundan’s finest chefs. Our High Priest really enjoys dining here, and he has even invited a distinguished guest today, so I need to check on the private room," John explained.
