Chapter 553: Chapter 238: Let’s form an alliance in the name of our 100-year friendship

Saina was Hefei’s teacher, and the old friend Plank spoke of was someone else.

Because of the teacher’s teacher connection, Wayne’s heart didn’t race as much, and he crossed her off the list of first loves.

Sister, I failed again.

By the way, apologize to Plank for the misunderstanding. Although it was a mistake, I did contemplate his mistress just now. It’s all that scoundrel Cao Cao’s fault, causing trouble even in death.

"I came primarily to say hello today and to give you an item for identity confirmation,"

Saina waved her hand and produced a wooden box, handing over two gold rings. The rings were engraved with magic runes on the inside, which facilitated communication with natural magic power and also served the purpose of identity recognition.

She had Wayne and Veronica project their thoughts into the rings, explaining, "My thoughts are also inside the rings. These rings serve as a token to prevent someone from impersonating me to deceive you, and to prevent you from being impersonated without my recognition."

According to Saina, there existed a kind of Divine Art within the Church headquarters that could alter one’s mental expressions, making it extremely difficult for even close acquaintances to recognize the change, a very sophisticated type of disguise technique.

Although not many possessed this Divine Art, it was still wise to be cautious just in case.

With the rings, the three could recognize each other through the stored thoughts within the rings. Even if someone with ill intent changed their appearance and thoughts, they would be able to detect it immediately.

Wayne nodded repeatedly. He had been fooled once before, when Flora changed her thoughts to impersonate the teacher and successfully deceived him.

Austin was also deceived, but he realized midway that it wasn’t his wife and left the scene disgruntled.

Veronica reached for the ring to put it on, but Wayne raised his hand to stop her, smiling at Saina, "A truly outstanding magic tool, thank you for the reminder, Teacher Saina. Without you, we might have really been fooled by others."

But how do you prove you are really the teacher’s teacher? After all, you said thoughts and appearances can change.

Sensing Wayne’s caution, Saina gave it some thought and understood his concerns. She was not angry but rather pleased with his prudence.

And rightly so.

Saina remembered that Wayne was Hefei’s student. She only had Hefei as a disciple, and Hefei only had Wayne as a student, three generations of a single lineage, with Wayne being the sole successor of her line.

For a moment, Saina felt quite fond of Wayne, whose caution had won her appreciation.

Not like Hefei, who was unclear now but in the past, was rather foolish and not very smart, willfully ignored advice, and often impetuously did foolish things.

The most foolish was getting married; Saina still felt...

Huh, this kid looks like the man who tricked Hefei!

Saina’s gaze turned peculiar as she sized up Wayne with a frown, "What is your relationship with Austin?"

"Father-son relationship," Veronica answered.

"..."

Saina’s face visibly darkened, her previously favored junior immediately lost his appeal.

Wayne nodded, understanding her dislike for Austin; with that connection, he was guilty by association, making it clear she was indeed the teacher’s teacher.

He could wear the ring.

Wayne gave Veronica a look, and the siblings wore the rings, injecting their thoughts into them.

As they projected their thoughts, Wayne saw a vast expanse of white space within the ring, where apart from him, there were two shadowy figures, one Veronica, and the other Saina.

Their appearances were too blurred to communicate, but they could sense each other.

Wayne gestured with his thoughts, waving to Veronica and then greeting Saina, but received no response.

Damn Austin, look at the mess you’ve caused!

In Lundan, being Austin’s son was like having a gold signboard, driving luxury cars, dating celebrities, and enjoying their company without payment.

Away from Lundan, that signboard no longer carried the same weight.

Wayne shrugged, not intending to flatter his teacher’s teacher into a better mood. There was no need; Hefei didn’t like Saina, so he would follow suit.

He remembered Hefei warning him not to be fooled by Saina’s gentle exterior, describing her as a quintessential authoritarian who viewed everything in the world as a dark jungle, where the only relationship between people was one of struggle and contention, survival of the fittest.

Saina’s dominance made her quite extreme, liking to control everything with pride in her bones, and her kindness and goodwill were just facades. If something lacked utility, she wouldn’t even bother.

Hefei was the perfect example, cut off after withdrawing from the Holy Maiden election, Saina simply deleted her contact, as though she never had that student.

Such a waste of a fine body.

Wayne thought of Flora, the former Holy Maiden who was almost a diluted version of Saina, and then of Philomena. If she hadn’t taken his form, the High Priestess of the Moonlight Church probably wouldn’t be much better.

Was it power that corrupted, or was it religion that bred ignorance?

Perhaps both had a part to play.

Wayne sighed once again at the terror of desire, speculating that every high-ranking member of the Church headquarters possessed strong Fire Elemental Affinity.

Explained through the theory of evolution, survival of the fittest: those with lower desires, due to their lack of ambition, were gradually squeezed out of the circles of power, eventually leading to the current ecosystem dominated by those with strong desires.

A thought struck Wayne as he recalled the dark impurities within Philomena, subtly affecting her thoughts and reason, perhaps this was the underlying cause.

Faith made people steadfast, but Faith Magic did not; instead, it dragged them into the abyss.

Wayne frowned and remained silent, with Veronica quiet too, the back row fell into a brief silence.
