Chapter 548: Chapter 236: The Little Devil’s Smile_2
"Dean, long time no see. I can’t even remember when we last met," Wayne grumbled, having lost contact for so long he’d almost thought Planck was dead.
"Did you bring the thing?"
Planck was wearing a black coat with his unchanged white lab coat underneath, and a round-top hat that made him look like an underground worker.
"I did." Wayne handed over the folder.
"It’s actually real..."
Plucking the Ancient Silver Coin from the folder, Planck confirmed it was genuine and clicked his tongue in amazement, "I thought you’d try to fool me with a fake, but you’re playing it straight this time."
"I thought about it, but with your smarts, it would be hard to fool you, so I didn’t bother trying." Wayne watched regretfully as the Ancient Silver Coin went into Planck’s pocket.
With that Ancient Silver Coin gone, he only had the one from Aub left—his assets had halved, and it was heartbreakingly sad.
Catching Wayne’s sorrowful expression, Planck chuckled, "I heard you became a Saint Heir candidate for the Naturalism Church and are about to head to the Church headquarters. Heh, I can’t let you take the Ancient Silver Coin out of Windsor; it would be troublesome."
"Is there a reason?"
Wayne’s eyebrows raised; the other Ancient Silver Coin hidden against his chest, a part of his daily training routine.
"No reason. One day when you take over from Austin and become one of the Magic Department higher-ups, you’ll get your own Ancient Silver Coin."
Planck spoke meaningfully, "The main thing is, you’ll be away for so long this time, and I need the Ancient Silver Coin, especially for identity verification. I can’t go to the Naturalism Church Headquarters to find you; it would be very troublesome."
Planck had experienced a similar hassle once and nearly got killed by a bunch of colleagues; it brought tears to his eyes to think about it.
Looking back, though, it was all worth it.
The Holy Maiden selection for the Naturalism Church lasts half a year, with several assessments during the period. Planck had calculated the time, and Wayne was about to leave Lundan soon.
After four months of getting used to the luxury of owning Ancient Silver Coins, adjusting back to a simpler life would be difficult; it would be a tough four months for him.
He could even imagine that the first thing Wayne would do after returning to Lundan in four months would be to call him and ask for the Ancient Silver Coin back.
He couldn’t be more certain; it was definitely going to happen.
Plus, Wayne’s patience had impressed him—so long without contact, not a single phone call, never mentioning the dark faith, acting as if he didn’t care at all.
Enduring for a moment doesn’t mean coping forever. Planck believed Wayne would come to him.
He held the initiative. When it came to patience, he had all the time to slowly drag things out. He wasn’t in any hurry.
"When I return from the Naturalism Church Headquarters, I’ll come to borrow an Ancient Silver Coin from you then," Wayne shrugged, giving Planck a pill of despair.
If there’s nothing else, then today’s meeting is over.
"Actually, there is one thing. As far as I know, the Naturalism Church doesn’t have a position called ’Saint Heir’, so your chances of being selected are slim. Do you want my help? I have a friend at the Naturalism Church Headquarters."
Planck winked suggestively, "If you perform well enough and his favored candidate loses, he will support you to become the Saint Heir."
"No, thanks. With my talent, no one can challenge me. I’ll get elected fair and square without resorting to any shady tactics," declared Wayne confidently.
"Correct in part. If talent alone was enough to get elected, would the Church headquarters’ higher-ups just be for show? What would be the point of power then?"
Planck smiled, "They’re not Liberty Mages, but they’re more unscrupulous. Trust me, without connections or backing, you won’t become Saint Heir."
Wayne appeared hesitant, but after a moment, he shook his head, "Forget it, I still believe talent trumps all."
Seeing him so stubborn, Planck didn’t say more and decided to secretly contact his old friend to give Wayne a push when the time came.
Planck believed in Wayne’s talent; with a level playing field, the other candidates were no match for him.
Moreover, he had complete faith in his own judgment.
He saw ambition in Wayne, a thirst for magic and power. Becoming the Saint Heir came with many benefits, something Wayne wouldn’t give up halfway.
This was a sure bet!
"Wayne, since you’re so insistent, all I can do is wish you the best of luck in advance."
Planck’s eyebrows lifted, his expression lively, "What about the Magic Department? Did they give you a task, asking you to become Saint Heir at all costs?"
"Lady Ivette mentioned it," Wayne stated truthfully.
"So it’s the Queen’s directive then?"
"Who knows? Society is too complicated. I just want magic..."
Wayne sighed, pure magic was too dull; adding a Magician Girl as a snack made it much better.
Just Magician Girls were not ideal either, too monotonous. Adding Magical Sisters and Magician Aunts created a richer variety that suited his gluttony better.
Thus, after parting with Planck, Wayne went to visit the Magician Aunt.
...
Wayne was sweet-talking in the Moonlight Church High Priest’s house, overdrawing four months’ worth of love and passion, while at Lando Manor, Chriss and Vivi brought gifts to see Veronica.
They’d all heard that Veronica had become a Holy Maiden candidate and would be out for three to four months, so they planned a girls’ night out without inviting Wayne.
Vivi arranged everything, and she brought Chriss along.
Walking along the manor’s path, Vivi tilted her head towards Chriss, her eyes curious, probing, "Senior, you seem prettier lately, your complexion is improving. Is it just my imagination?"
"Really?"
Chriss touched her face; it turned out Wayne hadn’t lied to her, facial masks genuinely beautified.
"Of course, it’s true. If I’m not mistaken, Senior, you must be in love," Vivi emphasized with intention.
